I use a pretty damn good email filter. I just checked a few minutes ago and it had 799 messages in there. Of course I haven't flushed it in months so it's about 30 days worth of crap.
One thing that some sites have that is nice is a sort of email proxy in place. eBay does something similar (I can think of some improvements to eBays but it's a start) In other words, emails are never exposed until communication is initiated. The receiver gets the senders revealed email and communication can continue via direct email.
The only thing is that some server admins hate it when websites send out emails so it takes a bit of voodoo to send the emails out. Something to look into.
