Title: Games room ...
Post by: ratzz on September 17, 2007, 01:29:03 pm
I'd love to see some pics of your games room, if you have one, or where you have your machine located!

I, unfortunately don't have the space, although I'm hoping to convert my attic into an office and locate my 80% cab there. I sometimes get glimpses of peoples games room, and must say that I am insanely jealous !!

COME ON, LET'S SEE 'EM!

First piece of advice:  strongly reconsider the thought of an attic as an arcade gameroom.  Horror stories abound about getting cabs into attics.  If you have an easier place to put them, go to lengths to do so.

Please don't be jealous. I haven't even started on the game room and I've had to move everything three times. First it was the spare bedroom, which I had to give up. Then it was the second spare bedroom which I had to give up. I tried the garage, but I couldn't lift the cabinet over the floor to ceiling pile of crap that's there now. My cab lives in the shed next to the lawnmower, tiller and table saw.  :dizzy:

I barely have room to work on it right now.  :hissy:

I'd show you a picture of my "gameroom" garage, but when my non-working games outnumber my working games, its kinda embarrassing. Not to mention the massive piles of junk everywhere.

I'm always nonworking games outnumbering working ones... I buy them all nonworking, almost.  I have bought few working ones.  Right now, though, all of my pins are taken down and stored so I can work on finishing the basement.

Like I always say: "Whatever I have to do to get them in the door." ;D

Wife is okay with me bringing home a piece of junk for next to nothing, in which I have to invest money and time to get working. If I try to even mention a nice machine, its a hell no due to price. Nevermind that the fixer uppers end up costing a much as the ready to go ones, or the fact that I spend time fixing them. ::)

Mine is still a work in progress, but it will be done later this week when I finish putting on the new baseboard (tonight) and have the carpet installed in a few days.

Here's what it used to look like when we bought the house:

The pictures make it look small, but there's enough room for 20 cabs or so and about 4 or 5 pins. I only have a handful of cabs and two pins, so I'm good for quite some time.

Edit: You can't see the walk-in closet, but it's actually big enough for another 4 or 5 cabs and has two electrical outlets inside. I don't plan on sticking cabs in there at this point since I don't lack the room right now. I'll probably use it to store PCBs, MVS carts, parts, and tools. I took the shelving out when I painted it, so I can put something a bit more custom in this time around.

You're into pins now.  The upper end "nice cabs" are the "fixer upper" prices now for the lesser titles... think 2x-3x for a top title.  Gotta come up with a new strategy for the wife.

Heh, I showed her the Futurama customized pin project and told her we could do the same thing in something she wanted it done. That did the trick. Judging by the way I get projects done, I'll get around to customizing it in...oh... sometime after I retire. ;D

The ridge racer is an empty cab I hooked up to my dreamcast to play Daytona, so my daytona machine owes me $30 ;D

Here's mine:  http://jhanson.com/arcade/gameroom.html

I chose a space theme for this room.  It's not filled to the brim with games (just one arcade machine and one pinball), but it leaves enough room for DDR, 4-player Wii games, a couch, and a chair.  I could comfortably fit in one more stand-up arcade machine and a cocktail cabinet, and still have room for all that, but I haven't found the need to yet.

These shots were taken a couple weeks ago.  Since then the Turbo Outrun has left the building as well as the blue "MAME" cabinet in the first photo.  The Rampage: World Tour at the end is becoming my MAME horizontal cabinet.... and I now have an Xmen vs Streetfighter housed in an early 90's Atari cabinet (with a Marvel Superheros vs Streetfighter marquee and a Marvel vs Capcom instruction card...the guy I got the cabinet from is a pure genius I tell ya!)

A little old but here's what it did look like a few months ago. The Commodore 64 has been moved to make way for the network laser printer, and the consoles have been moved around a bit.

Dude, why did you paint the pinball cabinet BLACK?!

I'd smack you across the face if I could.
I must say, your threats are a bit uncalled for.  I'm kind of surprised that Saint and the mods put up with that kind of talk in the Main Forum.

But anyway, if you must know, the pinball cabinet had about 25% of the vinyl sticker still left on it, and had been poorly spray painted black.  It also had deep gouges in it.  So, I removed the remaining 25% of the sticker, sanded it, repaired the gouges, and painted it.  If I could find the Bally-Midway sticker that goes on it, I would get one (assuming it wasn't outrageously priced), but they're not easily found, unfortunately.  The Ballys from this era (6803 mpu) aren't exactly collectible, so nobody makes repro materials for them.  :(

As for Chad's question, it's a MotorDome.  It's a 1986 Bally-Midway machine, not especially popular, but has a nice 1,000,000 shot up a difficult ramp on it.

Yeah, I've seen that before.  It's close, but not quite it.  From pictures I've seen of the full art, on MotorDome it's supposed to be orange instead of pink.  What was left on mine confirmed that, except that it was faded a bit more yellowish than the other pictures I've seen.

Quite frankly, it's not worth the $90 to me to put close-but-not-quite-it artwork, and boring artwork at that, on a sub-$300 pinball machine.  I've spent more than that on playfield parts, but those are worth it to me since they impact game play.

Anyway, back on topic, no gameroom yet, my MK cab sits in my living room so far.  Our thrid bedroom is doubling as storage space at the moment, thats originally where I wanted my gameroom to go.  Once we can clear it out, it's gonna become a guest bedroom.  I need more room!

I'm currently investigating my options. My ultimate dream is this:

http://www.mombargbeton.nl/pages/mombargbeton.php

http://www.mombargbeton.nl/pages/referenties_view.php?id=4

(All in Dutch, but I guess you get the piccies)

It would be a prefab "cellar/basement". Here in Holland houses rarely have basements because large parts of the country are very wet clay land. We need to use piles to build anything. This would be installed in my garden. Will need some digging :D Not sure if it's possible/payable for me here...

But I really do need a place to put my Atari Dominos, Pleiads Cocktail, Galaxian, Centipede, Mario Bros., Star Wars Cockpit, Konami GT Cockpit and Mame cab !

What! No love for the Oddyssey 400?  ;D

The whole room has been a challenge. It's small, and it needs to house a pin collection, vid collection, and console collection. I'm fund-raising now for the built-in cabinets that will go in the corner for the TV and consoles. My built-in will surround a Cyclone pin cabinet stood on end with a drawer set built in to it for my consoles and a TV on top. I also have plans for a "raised" channel around the ceiling with arcade art and indirect lighting. The black and red colors will tie in to those elements, and hopefully tone down the floor a little.

The floor story is an interesting one. My mom works for a wholesale carpet company. The manufacturer of that VCT tile is changing the way the tiles are numbered. Mom's company had a cabinet with opened boxes of these tiles for samples, designated by this number. She calls and says they are going to throw away these opened boxes of tile, do I want some. I ended up going over and picking up all they had of the grey and red tiles. I then drew a floor plan in AutoCAD of my room and divided it up into 12" squares. I counted exactly how many tiles I had in the two colors, and came up with a pattern (yes, there is a pattern) that used those tiles, and then filled in the rest with black. It took two boxes of black tiles (with one piece left over) and all the reds and greys to do the room. $43 in total.

The VCT is great for the games because it is easy to slide stuff around (with the plastic feet, not the metal) and if a tile gets damaged, you can heat it with a heat gun, pry it up, and put a new one in it's place.

I recently moved from CA to the midwest, and our new home has a basement so I finally get a gameroom! Here it is, currently under construction. It'll have a few full-size cabs, several bartops, big screen theater and a collection of consoles. The overall dimensions are about 30x20 feet.

Ha, yeah it does! I have some LEGO mosaics that are going on the walls as well.

I wanted the smaller room where the consoles are going, to be separate but still feel connected to the larger theater room, so we opened up the wall with those arched windows.

I see you have two things necessary in a game room: a cot stored underneath the pool table for those marathon runs; and an assult rifle handy for those who just won't go home.

LOL, actually, the "cot" is part of my wife's exercise equipment.  I usually stuff it under the pool table to get it out of the way.  The M16 is just a movie blank firing replica.

Cool gamerooms everyone!

rescue161 I love those LED panels! Where do you get those? Can they be animated too?

The LED panel can be animated, but you have to draw each screen in paintbrush.  It sucked drawing the still images.  I drew a Rolling Stones tongue that rolls across the screen, but nothing more than that.  You can draw just about anything that will fit into the screen and will look good with only 3 colors.  I had to use my imagination a little on some of the things I've put in there.  I got the big one on Ebay.  I have a smaller one that is text only.

It could have been worse...I was at Gameland In Lake Geneva WI last weekend, which has a ton of classic games and some pinball. Unfortunately, alot don't work, or if they do, they don't work right. Anyway, the owner must have a heat problem or something, alot of the machines had holes drilled in the back, but his Black Knight pinball, he had them drilled in the side of the head, in all the artwork!  :dizzy:

Here is my game room.

The bottom shelf of the console rack is now occupied with a model 2 SEGA Genesis. Once the Quad Laser is finished, the orange table is coming out of there as well as the small rack on the right. I'm going to put the TV on the Quad Laser and use the inside to hold all my controllers.

You've got enough room for a cocktail in there, what are you waiting for?
