Title: Star Wars Mame needs calibration ???
Post by: Luigi on May 26, 2006, 01:25:47 am
Hi.

Since finding an original Star Wars yoke is almost like searching glasses in the ocean I made my on one using a Road Riot steering wheel. Works very fine.

There's just one point with Star Wars: the ship always flies to the left without touching the yoke. I found the attached screenshot that showed me that it's not only my ROM that seems to need "calibration".

Is there a way to bring that crosshair to the middle of the screen where it should be??

Thanks.

Good question. I have seen 2 or 3 threads about this same issue. They have reported that it is a little bit off to the left. Most have said that it doesn't affect gameplay much if at all. I haven't seen a fix for this, though. That doesn't mean that it hasn't been fixed, but I haven't seen it.

Thanks.....

Of course it affects gameplay. I always have to "compensate" that auto-left-drift  ::)

I'll keep on searching.

I know someone from Italy who is a Mame-Developper...maybe he'll know something. I will let the community know if I get something about it.

Would you care to show off your DIY yoke?  I'd love to see how you built the Y-axis section.

As to your calibration troubles- do they affect other games as well, or is the problem specific to Star Wars?  If it's a global problem, then maybe you can adjust your pots.  But if it's specific to SW, then you'll need a software fix.

I was under assumption that a Star Wars Yoke needs to be calibrated every time you start a game.  All you have to do is go around in a circle (full motion) before you start a game.  Works for me...

@kremmit: due to a ide-controller failure on my motherboard many of my pictures are lost. I will make new ones and explain how I made the Y-axis.

@southpaw: I tried to calibrate but it seems that it cannot be saved. When calibration is done the game resets and the "offset" is back.

It's only Star Wars, other games like Outrun oder Buck Rogers work perfectly.

It is definitely a star wars specific problem.

Apparently doing the calibration method that southpaw suggested each time you load up Star Wars is the only solution.

Finally I tried the mentioned procedure and it worked very fine :)

I moved the yoke in each direction and the crosshair was centered.

Playing is now much easier ;)

Thanks a lot!!

It is definitely a star wars specific problem.

Not a real problem: it's called correct emulation.

I'd quote, but I'll just link instead. (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?topic=36172.msg318424#msg318424)

Since I received several questions about the Road Riot thing I decided to make this part of my homepage.

Please don't "roll over the floor laughing" about my english. Instead of that help me improve it :)

Hi Luigi,

I was wondering.....the pictured arcade cab you have used in your yoke project, is it/was it a Zaccaria Crazy Kong or Zaccaria Scramble cab ?? If so, would you mind explaining how you have mounted the PC Monitor?

Apologies if this is off topic with the original post. Please feel free to PM me if you have the time.

Many thanks in advance.

I did some "design" for that blank cover.

Thanks to Localarcade for the example. I made one looking like the original overlay in teh Star wars machine....hope you like it :)

Thanks...and feel free to ask any further question :)

It's really fun playing Star Wars and Empire strikes back......but hey.....I really have to use bigger screen ;D

I have also found some futuristic racers. They only go left/right but I use the forward/backward for increasing/decreasing speed. Needs some practice but very funny and exciting :)

And I really have to install a steel rope or will have it ripped apart some day  :'(

Definitely.  For instance the word "alot" does not exist, but people tend to use it a lot.

:)  Don't hate me, I couldn't help it!  Don't throw stones in glass houses and all that...

If the worst language crime I'm guilty of is the use of a common misspelling, I'll have no problem sleeping at night ;P

How about lazy use of a proper if-then clause?  Or leaving out the period?   :laugh2:
