Title: Off-topic general computer question
Post by: JonnyBoy on April 23, 2006, 03:35:43 pm
Are there any dangers to having a CD drive oriented vertically? I know the playstation two stands used to orient the CD vertically and I always wondered if there is damage to the disks. Would the same apply for PC CD-rom drives?

I've seen some Flex designed cases built to work that way.  As long as your CD/DVD drive has four little tabs sticking out in the tray to hold the disk there shouldn't be a problem.  I know for a fact Gateway used to make PC's like this.

I've had CD roms and hard drives that specifically state that they can be mounted horizontally or vertically.   You should just check the specs/manual for the CDrom drive you own.

I've always been under the impression that the vertical stand was the main cause of damage to the laser of the PS2.  It seems that gravity would pull the lens down a bit and wear out the motor.  I know they quit selling the vertical stands, and replaced them with the horizontal stands.  So, I would avoid the vertical drive if possible.

But if you notice all of the next gen systems are vertical.  The ps2 just had problems with the lens in the early models.

Supposedly it doesn't make a difference anymore (espicially if you have tabs like kevink said)

Personally, I have had better luck with them mounted horizontally..but if you need vertical...go for it!

All next gen consoles are DISPLAYED vertical..

The center of gravity of the spinning disc will be off a tiny tiny bit. This would cause slightly more wear on the motor but we're probably only talking a month or so off it's total life span. Before that comes about, a new console will be out anyways.

Now if you want to destroy a CD/DVD drive quickly, use discs with those nasty adhesive labels. That throws out the center big time.  :)

The tabs don't do anything except prevent the disc from falling out when inserting and ejecting. Once the spindle grabs the disc, they don't matter.
