OK follow me on this. I am making a three sided cocktail table. The long third side is split in half by an elevated trackball that is at the height of the glass top. So just picture a wooden box sitting on top of and in the middle of the third side of a cocktail table. It doesn't really sit on top because it actually hangs lower than the CP and splits the third panel in half.
Anyway, I am going to cut out a 5x8 hole in the face of this and put my logo in it made of clear plexy glass. I have a fire theme and I want flickering flames behind the logo.
I have come up with two options that I can think of.
Option #1:
Put two real 40watt flickering bulbs behind the graphics. (But will they get too hot?)
Option #2 (don't know if this is possible)
Put red and yellow LEDS behind a slow spinning transparent wheel with black marks on it to simulate flame flicker. Will this work or look stupid.
Can anyone think of any other options? Hasn't anyone tried this? I know I saw the spinning wheal somewhere, Mexican restaurant maybee?

You can get LED candles that will provide you with the flicker effect. I've gotten some off of ebay and others at some B&M store. That'd be my suggestion for authentic 'non-repeating' flicker without the heat of an incandescent. Google or eBay search for LED candle and I'm sure you'll find something.

I used the second method listed on the following page last halloween. It looks pretty darn good, especially if you can't see the actual bulb (like in your case). Also, it's very cheap to make. They do warn though that constant use may burn out the lamp starter. For continuous use, try the first one listed on the page (involving the dimmer switch). It's a little harder to build, but I'm sure it will work very well.
BTW, if you go with the starter one, be sure not to use an FS-4 starter, they will not work. Get either an FS-2 or an FS-5.

Yeah, the first time I saw that I was in disbelief. It's an awful shame though; it ran for one season and it's sitting in a warehouse now. Oh well, walkthroughs are easier to scare people with anyway.

Dark rides are actually more common in the UK I can think of at least 5 permanent installations right off the top of my head. Two of them that date back to the 1920's
