Motivated people evacuating a disaster area on foot. (http://www.cnn.com/2005/WORLD/africa/09/21/somalia.refugees.ap/index.html)
-
Yeah well, in America if you can't drive there in under 20 minutes, it's not worth getting your fat ass up for.
-
I'll tell you one thing. I'd much rather walk across America than Africa.

Less lions, thats for sure.
This is one of the arguments oft brought up re: Katrina. Bottom line, mostly everyone that didn't make it figured someone would help them.
The folks in that story knew that they were on their own.
-
Ultimately, everyone is on their own. The only person an adult should depend upon for last resort help is themself.
-
Ultimately, everyone is on their own.
-
There is a Muslim phrase
Trust in Allah, but tie up your camel.
It means that God isn't a free pass. He might "provide" in the way of allowing you to walk out.
Other similar phrases, "Pray to God but keep rowing to shore".
God helps them who help themselves (usually misused as an excuse to do something wrong).
-
but muslims are bad guys. so that statement isn't relevant. the REAL god will fix everything for me. unless i sinned. Then i'm screwed. especially since my neighbor has started building an arc...i'm starting to think i'm the odd man out. ???
-
"The wind came back with triple fury, and put out the light for the last time. They sat in company with the others in other shanties, their eyes straining against crude walls and their souls asking if He meant to measure their puny might against His. They seemed to be staring at the dark, but their eyes were watching God."
-
by the way....there are more than 26 people in Somalia. And at least 26 people left NO on foot. Now if everybody in Somalia who is in danger but doesn't have a car evacuates by foot.....
-
There are probably more cars in the parking lot at my work right now then there are in the entire country of somalia.
-
I thought Somalia was a food dish?
-
Those individuals are not responsible for all of Somalia.
-
Ultimately, everyone is on their own. The only person an adult should depend upon for last resort help is themself.
Ah, but then most of them believe "GOD" will provide, now don't they? Another excuse not to lift a finger.
Do you not care for america and americans?
Yeah well, in America if you can't drive there in under 20 minutes, it's not worth getting your fat ass up for.
-
He's not too far off, tommy. An awful lot of those trapped people in New Orleans, when asked by reporters why they did not evacuate, said "we figured the gov't would come and save us".
-
come on, here in America we will drive around a shopping center parking lot for 30 minutes looking for a spot just so we don't have to walk.............
::)
-
Good point. I've seen people do that for 15 minutes or more to avoid 30 seconds of walking.
-

All i have to do is tell you i don't do that and your whole argument is out the window.
Don't start making generalizations.

ummm did you not see the rolled eyes thingy??? come on man, quit taking things so serious....
would it please you more if I had said
come on, here in America most of us (99.9%) will drive around a shopping center parking lot for 30 minutes looking for a spot just so we don't have to walk.............
would that make you happy???

That would be much better, thankyou.
Why didn't your rolleyes face just say that in the first place. ;D

I don't have a source either, but I'm fairly sure I heard at least one survior say something similar in an interview. I also heard several people say that they believed that god would help them.

I won't drive around looking for a close parking spot, but when I do park in the back of the lot, often whoever I am with will complain that I didn't try hard enough for a closer spot.
-
When I'm in a car with a driver who is doing that parking lot thing I never bite my tongue. I like to say things like, "It's amazing that people will go so far out of their way to get fat."
If it's someone I don't feel quite so comfortable with I'll always at least say, "You realize that it's going to at least another minute to drive around to look for a closer spot, but if you had simply taken that one we'd almost be in the store right now..."
I have a lot of contempt for our society's precoccupation with being as lazy as possible.

Chad said, "an awful lot"...and of course, that being his only point, you'd think he was trying to make a broader critique of all those who chose to stay behind, as well as all those who were left behind.
I'm sure several people said Ronald McDonald was coming to save them, doesn't make sense to try to extrapolate "an awful lot" from that.
Is CNN credible enough? I heard a few of them interviewed say things like that.......
A few? Here we go again...
There were 50,000-80,000 people trapped in N.O., I'm just supposed to accept Chad's glib remark that if they were just "motivated" enough, they could have all walked out? That neighboring towns would have just let them in? (even though bridges were later blocked anyhow)
I don't doubt some people said "because the gov't would save me", my point is, what does it have to do with the vast majority of people who stayed behind for economic reasons, or for health reasons, the elderly, sick, weak, or for simple lack of a place to go, or FEAR of leaving?
How is Chad NOT implying that those who stayed behind, did so because they were not "motivated"? That they somehow deserve less sympathy because Chad needs to define them as "less motivated"? It's an ignorant statement, devoid of the reality surrounding a lot of those who stayed.
Furthermore, in the parlance of Chad...how is that a "solution" to anything? To me, it's another one of Chad's bigoted underhanded remarks. (The kind he won't defend, nor explain, yet claim are "blunt" and "clear".)

I am working currently on having the courange to stand behind the violence inherent in the system. The implications inherent in my statements will have to wait.

Just so you know. I never EVER take the extra time to read that stuff you put in tiny type. I've got a 24" monitor and that is almost unreadable even squinting -- and I've got at least 20-15 vision. I just don't understand the logic of typing it if you don't want others to read it. I get using various devices for effect, and I'm cool with the strikethrough, or bold, underlining, italics, sticking a "p.s." at the end. But that tiny font thing rubs me the wrong way.
-
You say that like you expect him to care.

I can't believe I needed more reasons to use it, but now that I know this, it just rocketed to the top of the charts! So you're a small-type bigot....can't we all just get along? ;D
You say that like you expect him to care.
EXCELLENT counterpoint Chad. I think your point has been proven!
-
See, now half the posts in EE are going to be in tiny print.

It's not our fault your type isn't motivated enough to increase in point size.

Time to jump on the tiny code bandwagon.... Now if only we could find an Anti-Tommy code

What do you suppose he is posting for, finger excercise? It's bad enough that don't refuse to read those posts. pretty computer savy and know how to zoom in and out in the browser. Most people who don't read that stuff probably miss it because they are unable to read it rather than that they are unwilling to put in extra effort.
Anyway....I'm fine with not reading it. I just thought I'd mention it, in case he hadn't really thought it through.
-
We have antitommy code. It is called English.
I don't usually read it either, but now I will because it's funny. When I do I cut and paste it into another window.
-
Quick Tip: If the post is short enough, and contains "small text"...then just hit 'quote' within the post itself and read as regular size quoted text within the textbox, then cancel the post. It's much faster than zooming.
Not that I ever read the tiny little things Drew writes anyhow...but, hey...I'm always one to help find new "solutions!"

Please see the shaker-flashlight post. Chad's on the right track there.

I think this is your way of telling me you love me and want to have my children. The point is moo. MrC is first in line to host my seed, and it will be inserted in his ear and feast on his brain for sustenance until ready to be spawned. You may take a number and wait at the end of the line.
Anyway....I'm fine with not reading it. I just thought I'd mention it, in case he hadn't really thought it through.
Blatant Moore-ism. You know darn good and well I don't need to think things through, and can find numerous sources here to back up that statement.
Time to jump on the tiny code bandwagon.... Now if only we could find an Anti-Tommy code
I think pointing out the stupidity of his points usually gets a response from him, as does telling him pit bulls need to be banned. I like to see Tommy speak at length. It makes for a few good laughs usually.
Carry on.
Wait....how do we get people already on the "quoting what people have said about something" bandwagon to combine bandwagons and make the quotes in that infernally small type? ShapeD started that trend long ago, and I don't think ANYONE other than myself knows what it says, and I'd bet Shape forgot long ago too!
Forgotten small-type quote sigs. The new bandwagon.
Had to add length to some of the small type to make it more difficult for MrC.
-
The quote thing is how I've always read the tiny posts, but I refuse to take part in such shenanigans.
I always wanted to use shenanigans in a sentence. I hope I spelled it right.

My mother in law once threw shenanigans and hooligan at me in the same sentence. I almost spit out my beer.

You shouldn't throw words like that about higgeldy piggeldy.
Top that one. ;D

I can't wait until I get that old & cranky. Old is happening all by itself. Cranky comes from hanging out here too long. ;)

No, I proceeded to snicker at her Dublin accent and she got angrier and grabbed her drink.
It wasn't her that shot me, though I bet many times she's wished it was.

You already have an anti-tommy code, it's called incoherent ramblings of MC.
-
Hold down the ctrl key and the scrollwheel zooms in and out. In IE there's not much zoom in, but you can zoom out a long way -- god knows what good that does. Firefox will let you zoom to the point that three or four words fills the entire screen. It's kinda creepy, actually, seeing your words grow and come toward you menacingly.
Even knowing this, I'm not willing to put in the extra effort to read a post where special effort went into making it harder to read.
-

Hey nice, tommy is against Mr C too.

Doesn't work for me in Firefox. The regular type gets larger, but the small type stays the same.

It works. Keep zooming in. For some reason it just takes a long time for the small type to get noticeably bigger compared to the regular type.

He meant Mission Control, but I had the same thought as you. Perhaps we can start a cult or something.

For you, hold the ctrl key and press the + key numerous times. About 10 times should make it readable, although how you'll find it after that is beyond me. The quote thing works wonders, and it's usually something I'll reply to, instead of exercising my fingers typing a reply about how I'm not gonna read that :P

I'm so used to having to deal with MrC's convolutions, I momentarily lost my head and felt the need to point it out. It might happen again, I can't tell. I'll try my second-best to make sure it doesn't happen again.
Cool, tommy is aganst Mr C too. There's hope for him yet!
Oh, and tommy, if you're reading this, pit bulls should be banned in Florida and any state you move to in order to escape the ban.
Stingray is an old fart who pretends to be lazy, but he's not too lazy to try to find out if people are talking about him. That's why he's closely monitoring all this small type.
That outta keep this small-type debate rolling

There's no way that byline is a coincedence. Some CNN tech was sitting there wetting his pants at how clever he is while putting that up on the screen.
