If anyone is interested. I integrated this into my cab and I love it because no one uses my cab without the keys (in my pocket!).
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=3666&item=5142634678&rd=1&ssPageName=WDVW I have about 10 left that I'll post up after this one goes I guess.

That is an awesome idea. Great way to camoflauge a switch!
-
$35 or $50 for buy it now? No offense, but I can make these for $19 each, shipped. Maybe less, in quantity.

I agree, very cool idea. But for that price, I'll make my own.... for that price.... I'll make THREE of my own ;)

I did the same thing with a lock I recycled off an old 486 (remember when all PCs came with a lock?) I drilled a recessed hole for it, so unless you look for it, it is not noticable. Mine does not have the fancy spring to return the key to center, I have to manually turn mine, then turn it back to the start position, but my total cost was $0.00 ;D

Hell, Happ sells these spring loaded locks for under $7!
-
I agree a bit expensive. My neighbor wired his motherboard to a switch mounted where the real switch would be on his cabinet and that's how he starts his machine. Same exact concept except he used a $1 switch rather than a $7 lock and key.
-
Hey BlackKnight which neighbor would do something cool like that? ;D
-
The switch cost $25 USD (probably got ripped off eh?), its the tube key type, not the standard key that's why the difference between mine and Happs. After seeing Happs standard key's at $7, I'm going to have to reconsider the price.
However the other materials involved and time to construct etc, I didn't intend the auction for people that could do this for themselves. :)

I wasn't pricing my stuff @ Happs, but I can get the tube keys for $5.00 in quantity.

Peale if you could make one that connected to a microswitch and normal happ button I would definetly buy one if it was priced right. The lock button doesnt do much for me personally.

Hm...I don't get what you're saying here. Can you diagram it out?

All you need to do is extend the wires from your microswitch to the motherboard... nothing special at all. All a PC power button is is a plain old momentary contact button.

Oh, is that what he wanted? I thought he wanted something really complicatd, involving the lock, and a Happ button. :P

As a sidenote, Peale's $5 tube locks are great!
Granted it would be ghetto ... but you could just get one of his locks, mount it normally in a panel or wherever, then mount a microswitch with an actuator arm on the back side of the panel in such a way that the cam of the lock hits the actuator arm when you turn the key in the lock.
Example microswitch http://www.happcontrols.com/electrical_supplies/95073500.htm
It still wouldn't spring back to center, and it's more cumbersome than knight's setup, but it shouldn't cost more than $10 to make.

Thanks for the props!

It would be far easier to use a lock switch, and cost roughly the same money.

You're exactly right (in fact, it'd probably be cheaper) I just mentioned it in case somebody wanted to use a tube lock instead of a normal key. The ghetto rig just seemed about the cheapest way to have a tube lock switch since i haven't seen tube lock switches for any cheaper than he's selling them.

The last cab I built I used the power switch out of the PC case, I mounted it inside a small hole in the lower front of the cab. It was basically invisible and you had to stick a pen in there to turn it on or off.

I know youre the mod :P but rules are rules.
http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,6106.0.html
Example: Dude, you're a crook! $1000 for an arcade cab? I built my own for $25! ... Bad
I didn't break the rules. I didn't namecall, and I stated where a product could be had for less money. Didn't post a link, because there *is* no link.
Fact is, I *can* make these for far cheaper. $19 was way high, more like $12, shipped.
-
Just havin a little fun. But now youve got me interested. $12 shipped? Does that just power on the computer, or the whole cab(marquee, tv, computer, etc)?
-
It's just a switch, so it would just power on the motherboard.
If you wired your cabinet correctly, you could have it power on everything, I'm sure.

There's always the Bits Limited strip for that:

And homebuilt solutions:

just a heads up, i just saw this lot of lock switches, 18 of them for(right now) $5. (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=7275&item=2288548259&rd=1) It's kind of taking a chance with no picture, but it may be worth a try(BTW - it's not my auction)
-
when i was an apprentice i used to have heaps of problems finding my gun-style soldering iron when i came back from lunch. so installed an ignition switch on that!! people seemed to leave it alone after that! i used a cam lock and a microswitch. wouldn't have been more than $5 at the time. maybe ten now...
