Title: Bad crimper?
Post by: fablog on November 19, 2015, 07:44:10 pm
I bought this crimper today and the vendor said it was OK with 22-24 AWG.  But I don't think so after to try with an arcade paradise Il led wire and a 0.1" housing. What do you think?

I cant believe its bad, Even the cheap ones will squeeze a crimp, For multiple however you might want to wear gloves so your hands don't get sore.

There are some really good sites on the subject, (Molex has a really good comprehensive overview), Surprising complicated for such a simple thing,  But at the end of the day yes, its a easily learned skill.

There's a nice YouTube video if I remember right. ..

Trick is to clip down the tabs to just the amount you need to make it around the wire.

Chance, I'll post a pic this week end but I'm a beginner in crimping.
Question for all: what means the 24 number in the 22-24 AWG dimension?

AWG = American Wire Gauge (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_wire_gauge)

22 AWG = 0.0253" diameter
24 AWG = 0.0201" diameter

+1 on ratcheting crimpers.

You can also get crimp dies that fit the Harbor Freight handles from Pimfg. (236 or 336 series dies)
Pin crimp tool (HT-336-FM (http://www.pimfg.com/Product-Detail/HT-336-FM) with an HT-236-2U (http://www.pimfg.com/Product-Detail/HT-236-2U-DIE) crimp die for 0.084" pins)

Harbor freight rocks

Sure, as long as you can get over the stench of vulcanized rubber coating everything in the store.

The best pics I could take. I don't know if this crimp is OK. What do you think? My tool  really isn't easy to use but it cost me only 20$. I'm sure a 50$ crimper is much better but for only 48 wires...

Looks pretty darn good, is it pretty sturdy?

Well placed zip ties for strain relief and your golden.

It's sturdy yes but my fear is the wire isn't in contact with the connector. I did a test of the led and it's alive but in test mod I see only purple, blue and red colors, not green. Is it normal or surely a wire isn't well soldered?

I found the answer alone, I soldered another one it function with all the colors. I'll do the first one again later. I crimping the other ones first :)

I learn something important: don't crimp too much those little wires and buy a good crimper.
More than 2 hours to crimp and crimp again 6 buttons, it was much easier to laminate MDF :)
It should be quicker for the next 6 buttons ahahah!

I finally understood why I was doing and doing again the same crimp. The connector the salesman sold me is with a diameter to much high.   I solve the problem bending the wire to get a 2 ply. Chance you gave me the right information but I couldn't find those exact molex models in my place.

I have this crimper and this model can not properly tighten the connector PH/DuPont/ Molex 2.5-2.54mm
criper has no heart-shaped jaws
DuPont crimp tool is still protected by patent, and all substitutes do not work correct

only this work fine
I use original Berg HT-102
http://www.ebay.com/itm/BERG-HT102-CRIMP-TOOL-/291619008362?hash=item43e5d8ef6a:g:2hsAAOSwkZhWS912 (http://www.ebay.com/itm/BERG-HT102-CRIMP-TOOL-/291619008362?hash=item43e5d8ef6a:g:2hsAAOSwkZhWS912)

and this is not terrible but still far from ideal
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Dupont-Pin-Crimping-Tool-2-54mm-3-96mm-KF2510-28-18-AWG-Crimper-0-1-1-0m-389-1-/111816590574?hash=item1a08c9c4ee:g:8uoAAOSwv0tVSOaU (http://www.ebay.com/itm/Dupont-Pin-Crimping-Tool-2-54mm-3-96mm-KF2510-28-18-AWG-Crimper-0-1-1-0m-389-1-/111816590574?hash=item1a08c9c4ee:g:8uoAAOSwv0tVSOaU)
too heavily crushes connector, and have jaw with double heart-shaped (orginal Berg have only heart on one side look on this auction 2rd photo, show correct crimp  http://www.ebay.com/itm/25pc-Dupont-pin-with-Wire-24AWG-1007-VW-1-80-FT-1-90-UL-CSA-L-25cm-Red-/130668148223?hash=item1e6c6db5ff:m:m9sLsrwr-x-lGT3Q-7L1B3Q (http://www.ebay.com/itm/25pc-Dupont-pin-with-Wire-24AWG-1007-VW-1-80-FT-1-90-UL-CSA-L-25cm-Red-/130668148223?hash=item1e6c6db5ff:m:m9sLsrwr-x-lGT3Q-7L1B3Q)) one side - heart, next side - circle)
