Title: Picked up this for $25!
Post by: brucelee00 on September 11, 2015, 09:36:22 pm
Hey Everyone,

So the story goes my cousin was working and saw this garage sale, so he decided to check it out. He knows I have an interest in arcades and saw this arcade selling for only $25 and thought I may be interested. I asked him what game ? so he just texted me images and to my surprise it looked like in pretty good shape. I thought to my self what the heck what do i have to lose ? not much right ? I waited a couple days when I had time to scoop it up and thought if it's still there I'll get it. Sure enough, it was and to my surprise when i brought it back and powered it up everything worked great! The monitor has no burn in and seems to be in pretty solid shape as well as the CP minus one of the wico sticks leafs seems to be bad in the left direction. So my question to everyone is what would you do with it ? keep it as is ? convert it ?

if it were me I would convert it because I would never play that game. I would do 2 player 6 button fighter layout with a trackball

Wow, super score!  I'm not a fan of sports games but for $25 who cares!

I'm glad you didn't end up with it, then.

I'd convert it to an NBA Jam or Konami 4 player game, maintaining the cab style and integrity. I'd actually keep it as is, myself, as that's a great football game.

I never thought about NBA Jam that would be pretty tight! NBA JAM and 2 on 2 Open Ice are my two favorite sports game. The only thing is I noticed this midway cab has a slightly different front base that I'm Not sure how I would correct?

Leave it. It's a Midway design.

If it were mine I would ask you to keep it nice as is. I don't have space for it but I think it would be great if you left it alone.

Ok, super conservative preservationist view.

While this is a good sports game and I enjoyed the 2 player version I once owned the fact is that no one cares about sports games.

Fix the broken switch, tastefully add 2 more buttons per player and tastefully replace the jamma board with a computer.

Don't pull off all the graphics or try to convert to a totally different game. Just drill out the extra buttons and enjoy what you have.

Only $25?!?!?

Jeesh....the coin door alone is worth more than that. Great pickup.

I like what others have said, leave it mostly intact. It already looks pretty cool.

+1 for NBA Jam!  Nice find for $25.00.

I would most likely take that apart and template clones from it.... Then put it back together as a original game, But that's just me.

I'll take that for $25.00 anyday and do what I want with it  ;D

Thanks Everyone for the feedback  I may just leave it as his and try to flip it or do a trade. I honestly don't have the room in the house at this point in time for a dedicated cab and have other mame projects I'm working on. I know some of the pieces alone on this machine are worth more then $25 so as of right now I'll hold on to it and see what other options come up such as trading it, selling it, or converting it tastefully for a friend/family member that may want an arcade. Nba Jam or 2 on 2 Open Ice would be sweet tho.

My favorite part of the story is where you said "send pics first" rather than "yes!"

Paint that ---smurf--- black and slap some shelf paper on it.

C'mon,
That things screaming for four 8-ways with 8 buttons for each player 1 & 2 and 6 buttons for players 3 & 4.
Throw on a dedicated 4 way, Tron stick, spinner and track ball (with mounting plate showing of course)

Just kidding

Seriously that's a nice find for that amount.
It looks very clean.

Looks clean.  I say repair the joysticks, clean it up with some Simply Green and flip it.  Then you can buy what you really want (or buy supplies to build what you want).

You're already ahead of the game here.  Post it up on KLOV and see if anyone is looking for that original game.

People sure are trying to shove KLOV down our throats lately.

Because when it comes to dedicated games, they get it at KLOV.

The OP can do whatever he wants with his ---steaming pile of meadow muffin---, but he did ask for opinions. I forget that people here don't want honest opinion, they want sunshine blown up their asses.

Funny you mention this because...

I just joined KLOV a few days ago and introduced myself as owning a couple of MAME machines in their "introduce yourself" thread.

I was promptly razzed for it.  :-[

Right. I do my best to defend BYOAC over at KLOV, because I think both are valuable resources to the dedicated collector, but it's hard to do so when people are still taking very nice machines and turning them into cabs based on their favorite TV shows.

Pollo Asado, cilantro, green onion, and queso fresco, with salsa and quacamole optional. I made a lot of white people happy last night.

You know how gringos are. When they ask for "No guac", it's like they just told me they were inspired by Flynn's Arcade. You silently shake your head and weep inside...

I suggest the OP put it up for sale. Consider what it's worth in parts as well, because if you sell it too low, it could get parted out anyway. The parts will go to the your critics via the middle man if that does happen. If the hobbist as a group determine that it's not worth preserving, by making the parts worth more than the machine, then it's ridiculous for anyone to complain. The OP never said he would turn down all offers in favor of a frankenpanel. I think paigeoliver probably has a strong understanding of this market and gave the advice that is most likely to keep the machine as preserved as possible.  Putting it up for sale is probably a waste of time, but personally, I would post it anyway.  It really is a nice cabinet and someone might demonstate with their money that they do want it preserved. If the preservationist take the action step of not purchasing it, grab a drill and make it playable.

Edit:  I guess I need to sleep before typing.  Also, all your base are belonging to us.

Dont mean to interrupt the conversation, but I must say, that was one heck of a deal you scored there. That cab looks to be in excellent shape.

Nice score! Keep it and fix up stuff like the joysticks. Once you get sick of the game, sell it for the right price and get something new.

Could you enlighten me what is up with the base of the cab? I don't recall seeing that before. The notch on the front left, and the cutout on the front right.

Nice find!

Like others, I initially thought, "Sell it to a preservationist for some coin!"

Then I saw http://www.arcade-museum.com/game_detail.php?game_id=9903 (http://www.arcade-museum.com/game_detail.php?game_id=9903).

Quote
Uncommon - There are 10 known instances of this machine owned by Super High Impact collectors who are active members. Of these, 3 of them are original dedicated machines, and 7 of them are only circuit boards which a collector could put into a generic case if desired.

Quote
Wanted - No active members have added this machine to their wish list.

So out of the 7,000 KLOVers, none have indicated an interest in acquiring a Super High Impact.

If it is a blast to play, I'd keep it until I needed the space, otherwise convert or piece it out.

Cutout on the front right is a standard Midway cab thing.  You can unlatch it from the inside, and pull the PCB board out the front.

And I believe the cut out on the left was a card dispenser. Like, play a game, get a football trading card.

Yup I believe that is exactly what it's for. I don't have the keys for the coin door or the card dispenser, but will take some internal pictures to share with everyone today.

I guess I remember that now. Interestingly my Bally Midway cab has the same base, but no pcb cutout. Must have been an addition after they chopped the Bally off their arcade machines.

Gotcha! it kinda looked like a card dispenser, of some sort, but seemed way too early for any gameplay related cards. Trading cards is actually kinda a cool feature. I'd toss some some of my old Topps football cards for fun.
