Title: optical wiring for steering
Post by: Sgc on August 10, 2015, 03:09:50 pm: Looking for the wiring to the steering wheel optical board of a Indy heat cabinet which i want to set up in a Mame cab

What is the part number on the board? (can't quite read it in the first pic)

Post by: PL1 on August 12, 2015, 02:59:25 am: Looking closer at your second pic, the IC appears to be an SN74LS14N (http://www.mouser.com/ds/2/405/sn74ls14-407757.pdf). (pgs. 1 and 22)

The dimple is next to pin 1 on the IC. (upper right in your second pic)

Ground goes to pin 7 of the IC (upper left in your second pic) from the top edge-connector contact.

5v goes to pin 14 of the IC (lower right in your second pic) from the 5th edge-connector contact.

That should leave two data lines. (4 wires total in the photo below)

If the cursor moves opposite of the expected direction, swap the data lines where they go into your optical encoder. ;D

Sorry, I didn't phrase part of that last post clearly. :embarassed:

There are 6 contacts on the edge connector, with a total of 4 wires connected. (5v, ground, and 2 data lines)

Edge connector (top is 1)

1. Ground

2. ?

3. ?

4. ?

5. 5v

6. Not used (dead end trace)

The two data lines connect to 2, 3, or 4.

Your board is probably wired with data lines on 3 and 4 like the optical boards in Off Road (http://www.arcade-museum.com/manuals-videogames/S/SuperOffRoad.pdf) (pgs 13-15) -- similar looking, but different part number. :dunno

To verify:
1. Connect 5v and ground to your optical encoder.

2. Set your multimeter to volts.

3. Probe 2, 3, or 4 while slowly turning the encoder wheel.

4. A data line will alternate between logic high (~3-5v) and logic low (~0-2v) as the teeth and gaps in the encoder wheel block and pass the IR light.

If you don't see changing voltages, you may have a burned out opto-coupler -- look for the IR LED light using a digital camera/cell phone camera. (they pick up IR wavelengths)
