Hello,
I have been a long time "lurker"... but this is my first post here. A few months back I started a website where I have been posting cabinet measurements. I strongly believe that this information needs to preserved, much like the artwork. The website if fairly crude, short on information, and I am sure it is riddled with spelling and grammatical errors.... but it is a start. I hope to continue to grow it over the next few year. If anyone has any feedback or suggestions (or even drawings), please let me know.
A liittle background...
I have been in the arcade collecting hobby is 1995. About 2 years ago I built a CNC machine for hobbyist purposes.... and I have cut a few cabinets since then. The CNC is a hobby for me that I use in my limited spare time.
Thanks
Brian

I'm sure you have heard of jakobud.com The cabinet plans on his page seem pretty good. Someone with more knowledge than me could comment on how accurate they are. (I have personally used his DK and Q*bert plans and have been happy) However, it sounds like you are going for 100% accuracy and easy transition to a wood CNC machine so that is nice.
I checked out your site and I'd like to offer a suggestion:
Make the plans available in pdf and/or jpg. Most common average Joes are not going to be able (or even want) to deal with .dxf or .crv file.
Good collection so far, hope it keeps growing. :applaud:

This week, plans were added for Gravitar, Black Widow, and Space Duel.
Next up is a Quantum build with custom drawings and tracing a Rockola cab (Nibbler).

Hello and welcome.
Thanks for your contribution to the hobby.
Another source of measurements and all that is helpful.
I also agree that having the plans in PDF would be even more helpful.
Keep up the good work and if there is anyway that this community can help in that effort, don't hesitate to ask.
-
Are the PDFs desired because they contain the vectors, or are PDFs desired to have measurements listed?
The concern is that while many of the machines have a lot of straight lines, many of the transitions are very gradual and difficult to document with curve and arc measurements as you would see on an engineering diagram. Can you point me towards an example of what would be good? I am assuming you are referencing similar to jakobud's drawings.

We want them for measurements and we understand all this. The way most people cut cabs here is using circular saw or table saw for the rough cuts, then using a jigsaw to get things close and then using a file and sander to get the angles the best they can. Then the second panel is cut using the first as a template with a router and a flush trim bit. We really don't need nearest millimeter accuracy, just something that's close enough. PDF is a great format because everyone can open them and read them.

+1 I don't even need a drawing for a cab that has square corners and straight lines. Just measurements are fine. Angles don't even matter because I can just measure from each edge to a center point and connect the dots.
As for cabinets that have long sweeping curves (like DK) most guys are just having a 1:1 drawing printed at Staples or Kinkos. Then cut out the drawing and trace it on the wood.
-
I have added 1:1 PDFs for all of the cabinet side panels. I have also added PDFs for some of the more difficult parts to cut as well. Hope this helps.
Thanks

Great website! Thanks for putting in the effort to get some detailed plans. This should help a lot of people. The CNC files are particulary helpful and hard to find online, so thanks again. :)

Recently added Taito slanted top cabinet plans (Jungle Hunt style) and Reactor plans.
Thanks

Added plans for Killer Instinct /KI2 to include control panels.

Missile command--Its not 100% and the distances are measured to sharp corners so you would have to radius them yourself--but it gets you in the very near ball park..I'm so going to start building these--I love this shape...
Nice job on the website and thanks for making the plans available--I have a dynamo HS-5 somewhere too..

I added plans for Crystal Castles and Agent X. Also added so reference pictures of the cabinet to help with assembly.
Menace, I have a set Missile Command plans that I have started on. Hope to add them to the site soon.

A lot of people are interested in DXF files, as they are more easily able to have a professional CNC shop recreate the actual dimensions, with little issue. There are a lot of great local shops, if you look hard enough, and not everybody who wants a near-perfect recreation wants to deal with making mistakes with manual tools. (I know on my original project, I had to recreate numerous parts many, many times over, whenever I made mistakes, or when I had an issue with the quality of the product after the fact.)
I really like the site, and would recommend if you are planning on providing PDF's, please do not stop providing DXF files as well.

I have been adding printable drawings of all of the side panels and difficult to cut components. I have tried to do some dimensioning of the cabinets, but it takes a lot of time and get confusing / difficult to put measurements on a curve that translates well to wood working tools.
In celebration for the weekend, I posted plans for the Star Wars / Empire Strikes Back uprights.
Thank you

Thank you. The site hasn't been up a full year yet and I am amazed at how much progress has been made. I was hoping for 6-10 plans by now.

I'm feeling stupid. I can't figure out how to actually get anything from the website. I see a list of "Recent Updates" but that's pretty much it. Nothing is clickable, I can't figure out how to DL any of the plans...

the layout caught me too at first. Hover over the grey menu at the top of the page, a drop down with all the options will appear
-
Got it! The hover isn't working when viewed through PHProxy, which I use when at work. Checked it through my tablet and wow - tons of good info there! Thanks for pointing it out.

small layout suggestion. you should probably move the Key image lower down the page, or swap it with the model photo when available. everytime i click a cab i look at that and think...that's not it...

I agree the site needs a re-work. It is the plan over the next few weeks to get things cleaned up and a little more presentable (including the content and all of the spelling / grammar). It has grown a lot more then I had expected this first year, so many of the areas that I said were "good enough" to get things started never got revisited and fixed. I am not happy with how the menu system works and menus moving off screen... so like I said, it needs some work. I am a little embarrassed of the site, but I honestly don't have patience for additional IT stuff when I get home from work, so unfortunately the site will continue to be "quick and dirty" and not a polished gem that it could be.... but the content will continue to grow.
Thanks

Pre-Classic Nintendo cab
Speaking of Nintendo cabs, this would be a cool one to have plans for:

Thanks Chance. I've never seen a Sheriff before...definitely a rare opportunity.
Vwalbridge- I have already reached out to Mike Hoss and he was kind enough to take a pile of pictures and measurements of the cabinet. I should have it updated shortly.
On the Nintendo theme, I have someone local allowing me to trace their DK cabaret when the pick up their freshly cut Taito cabinet.
Thanks

Thanks snakezone for the offer... I may reach out eventually.
I updated the plans for the Radar Scope flat front and the Heli Fire. I am not sure really sure how I should judge these. The plans are basically a standard Nintendo cabinet with the correct measurements for the side panels and other components. Thanks to KLOVer MikeHoss1414 for taking the measurements. With that said, the internal structure for mounting the "TV" is not represented in the drawings. There is a line representing the approximate placement on the front edge of the TV cabinet / monitor shroud. I am not sure how relevant this placement is outside of authenticity.
I believe the drawings will allow for the creation of a Nintendo cabinet that will allow for the marquee, control panel, etc... to fit, and the cabinet will look authentic, but the individual components would not be interchangeable between the drawing below and an original cabinet e.g. is the coin door hole the same between this cabinet and a classic Nintendo (DK style) cabinet... not a clue. I am not sure I would call it a tribute cab, since the original measurements were referenced.
I also have a set of plans I am trying to get verified for a Gauntlet at the moment. I also have a set of plans to verify for a tapper. If I can get these verified, I will get them posted shortly.
Thanks

I've been looking for Pac-Man cabaret plans for ages Every time someone asks about that cab, they get linked to the Ms Pac cabaret... which is a totally different cab. The Pac-Man cabaret is the same as Rally-X.

I will KILL for a nintendo cabaret.
...Get those plans up and we'll make a small series of videos for it on the youtube channel.

I have actually been thinking about building one. Gimme those plans!!!!!! :lol

Started a Facebook page (link is on the website). I've had multiple requests for this. I plan on posting more regular updates there. I will continue to post here as new plans get done.
I am assembling a bunch of Konami 4p cabs (Simpsons style) and I am working on a howto page. It is about half done. Should be complete some time this weekend.
I am also about 3/4 done tracing a Nichibutsu cab (Frisky Tom / Moon shuttle style) and hope to have that posted soon as well.
Thanks
Brian

Plans were added for Berzerk, Frenzy, and Environmental Discs of Tron. All of the plans are unverified.
Also, I have a pile of plans posted to the website that have not been verified (they have the Warning banners). Anyone who has one of these cabinets and is willing to check a few measurements for me, it would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

I have not cut a Stargate cabinet, but the Taito cabinet turns out well.
A few weeks ago dungeonmastr (from KLOV) provided a set of plans for a Nintendo cabaret. I just got a donor cabinet dropped off this past weekend, so I will update the plans if any changes were needed.... but dungeonmastr's plans are already posted on the website.
Thanks

That Taito looks real nice.
I'm planning to cut the Stargate manually from your plans but may (shudder) try a local CNC for the Taito. You just make it too easy. ;D

I'm enrolling at my local TechShop soon and they have a 4'x8' CNC ShopBot that takes VCarve Pro files... So I plan on tossing several of these plans on there. Should be a TON of fun!

They require an in-shop class on the machine and software before they let you use it, so converting a cab file would be good class work. So the files that are on the site are just tool paths then?

[/quote]
The CRV files contain the vectors and the object groupings. The tool paths have been removed.
I struggled over the tool path issue for a long time.....before deciding to remove them. For the most part, they are not that difficult to get added for a CNCer with some experience. The concern is that the tool paths are machine specific.
Based on how the table is configured, the x and y axis could be switched, wrong tool cutter selected, or the cut depths incorrect. For example, my table uses a spoil board and when I cut material and I cut at a depth of .82" and into the spoil board. If I had a nice ShopBot with a vacuum table, I would be cutting at a depth of .74" to save the vacuum table. My tool paths would destroy the vacuum table.
My table is 7hp, others may be 10hp or 2.2hp. Wrong feeds and speeds can break the bits or maybe the machine.
Like I said, once you get close to being ready to cut, I can help you through the details.
Thanks

Sorry for the Necro-bump... I haven't logged in for a wile.
If any of you are using the plans (like cj138's Star Wars build), please le me know. I would love to add some pictures if you are willing and I can make any adjustments to the plans as needed from problems you encounter.
