Title: Molex connection and Cable
Post by: Blueic5 on January 19, 2015, 05:50:27 pm
How are people making long 12v molex cables?   Do you simply extend an exciting cable from the psu or can you make up your own from scratch?

Splice in two wires and roll your own.

yes I was talking about standard molex connectors from PC PSU.  I thought I maybe able to make a female one up somehow but not finding the bits I would need when I looked and not sure where to start.

Go to digikey dot com.  If you know what kind of connector you need they are a good place to start.  They have A LOT of stuff.  And if you dont know the name of the connector you need post a pic on here and someone (most likely PL1 (Scott)) can name it for you.  Fun fact: Did you know PL1 was birthed from the internet?

Some people make them. Some People buy them.

I thought about making my own, but I only needed a couple and figured the time, effort and tools would be more than just buying a couple. So, I bought some like this:
http://www.amazon.com/inch-Molex-Extension-Cable-Sleeved/dp/B0014XDBIA (http://www.amazon.com/inch-Molex-Extension-Cable-Sleeved/dp/B0014XDBIA)

yeah, yeah I know it's a BYO site.. but hey..

Most of the time buying one is the best option. Crimping them can be a pain in and it's just easier to buy one, and if you need it longer, just cut and solder/splice in an extension.

12v is yellow, 5v is red.

Does Amazon not ship to the UK or charge a lot?

Just curious as I order movies from Amazon UK every so often without any issues, but you never know if the opposite is true.. :)

THey do have 36 inch extensions on Amazon.uk.com ( http://www.amazon.co.uk/Phobya-900mm-Molex-Ultra-Extension/dp/B00EUREU8M/ref=sr_1_24?s=computers&ie=UTF8&qid=1421863441&sr=1-24&keywords=4+pin+molex+extension (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Phobya-900mm-Molex-Ultra-Extension/dp/B00EUREU8M/ref=sr_1_24?s=computers&ie=UTF8&qid=1421863441&sr=1-24&keywords=4+pin+molex+extension) ) but they are a bit more expensive - EBAY UK has similar cheaper.

EBAY UK has 90cm ones for £3.69 (Can't tell what the shipping is as they just post does not post to U.S. when I look !!) ( http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/90cm-4-pin-Molex-Power-Extension-Cable-Black-Sleeved-Extra-Tidy-/190946935025 (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/90cm-4-pin-Molex-Power-Extension-Cable-Black-Sleeved-Extra-Tidy-/190946935025) )

Could always connect 2 together to make one longer one !
EDIT : Actually just thought of something -- went back to their listing and clicked on the store front to see other listings and this came up as one of the 10 Molex cable options  : ( http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/72-Inch-Molex-4-Pin-LP4-Power-Extension-Cable-Black-Sleeved-/191137381808?pt=UK_Computing_Drive_Cables_Adapters&hash=item2c80acfdb0 (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/72-Inch-Molex-4-Pin-LP4-Power-Extension-Cable-Black-Sleeved-/191137381808?pt=UK_Computing_Drive_Cables_Adapters&hash=item2c80acfdb0) )

72 Inch for £4.49 !!

if its just 4-pin molex connectors, i find it easier and neater to just crimp my own extensions. if you have the right crimper, and pins to go with the molex, its pretty easy.
