So I've done plenty of searching and found similar problems, but not THIS problem... compared to the system sound of my computer, MAME is very quiet, and not just midway games. I've maxed out the master volume, i've gone into the TAB menu of the roms and maxed out all of those volume channels. I even opened the volume control and set MAME to 100% and Hyperspin to 5%, Hyperspin is STILL louder than MAME! ??? Any suggestions?

I use a pair of wireless headphones with my PC (Sennheiser HDR 170) and it definitely rocks your ears. I can't even max the volume in most games because it's so loud.
Only MKII has really weak volume that I can recall right now.

what happens if you launch mame form command line instead of your front end?

The speakers I have don't seem to be the problem, everything else is loud enough. (although I do plan on replacing them, they're just old computer speakers that I gutted so they buzz a bit at loud volume).

Same result. Could it be an issue with the roms? or possibly the build of MAME?

so, what if you make a new folder and put just the mame exe and a rom in it and run that? This just helps pair down the possibilities.

just went ahead and tried this. same results. Using the frogger rom for these tests if it matters.
EDIT: Wanted to add, I downloaded the Circus rom from Mamedev.org. Same results. I'm using the Mame64 binary from Mamedev.org as well... Probably gonna try compiling my own at some point to get rid of the nag screen, but it definitely appears to be a Mame issue I'm guessing?

What version of mame are you using?
I forget the exact INI setting name, I think it is just SOUND. The default should be AUTO. You might try changing that to DSOUND and see if that does anything. I doubt it will in this case, but never hurts to try.

This is definitely a unique issue. Copying over just the exe and the rom eliminates any cfg, ini or nvram issues. Have you tried a different mame build or flavor (like IVPlay http://www.mameui.info/ (http://www.mameui.info/) )?

If you're running this in Windows, click on the speaker icon, open up the mixer, and make sure you have accidentally cranked down the application volume.
Here's what it looks like on mine:

Use F2 instead of TAB.
