That is cool.  I think you should pursue it.  Also, I had no idea you could flick the controller like that.

Would you make it look like the arcade release of Mario Kart Arcade GP?

    Loving this project so far.
That's some sweet drifting action you got going on there LT.

Can you post some more pics on the bracket you used to attach the wheel?

driving games seem better when siting, so why not little things that sit on your lap? Like the padded things for laptops, only this time wii-eel (wheel /pun) mounts. You could then still drive sitting in front of a bigger TV

just spit ballin ideas.

Maybe one of those kids color tables.  Seems like a difficult task with the flip action.

LT - Going through your builds in my head one word comes to mind.  Simplicity.  This one just seems forced.  Its a great idea but I think you are just trying to make it work.  I think you should keep at it but let it create itself like your other builds have.

How about a tilt-out wheel design?

CP (green) is hinged at the back so you can lift it and tilt the wheel forward.

if we're just thinking of ways to mount them seamlessly, why not just giant magnets under the CP. Make the Wii wheel rig, put a magnet on the bottom of that. unless you drive angry, it should suffice.

I was thinking about going with the no carriage bolt look for the joysticks and thought about those kit deals Randy sells. Then it clicked... What if I use a t-nut and a butterfly head bolt like all this drum stuff? Something like this has got to be the solution. I'll use a small block of wood with a through hole in the center for the bolt and have a small dowel on either side to keep it from shifting. 1 bolt for each, minimal materials, no moving parts, and I don't have to have the control panel box be 10" deep. 3 small holes on the underside of the control panel and it's in business.

Looks interesting.

What angle do you want to operate the wheel at normally?

Do you need to tilt the top towards you, away from you, or both?
(The video you posted only shows tilting the wheel away from you)   :dunno

The company name to know for the knob/threaded shaft is Dimco Gray (http://dimcogray.com/).

Use the website to find the desired fastener then plug the P/N into Amazon FTW.

For tee nuts, I prefer to use the ones with the small nail holes instead of the prongs, especially in MDF.

How do you put it back in?  It seems that *the force* would keep it in place once you took the wheel out.

Looks like you've got a good design there, LT.   ;D

Maybe add some furring strips on either side of the L-bracket to form a guide channel for easier alignment.

Add two thin nuts sandwiching a star-washer or a lock-nut to retain the knob on the L-bracket and you're golden.

Use a shelf-pin cover similar to this (http://www.homedepot.com/p/ClosetMaid-Large-and-Small-Shelf-End-Caps-for-Wire-Shelving-14-Pack-71016/100095946) or the ones for bookcase shelf pins over the back screw to minimize scratches.

Same way you pulled it out -- lift the green and tilt it back.

Gravity does the work keeping the green (CP) down -- add some type of easy-release latch if your gameplay style is vigorous enough to tilt the CP while using the joystick.

I'd go to a junkyard and pick out a set of nice car seats. Fix them to a 2x4 base, and make a pedestal with a mount on the other end for a tv. You can jailbreak the wii and probably have it boot directly to the game. I'd keep it simple and leave the controllers wireless as is. You could possibly have the seat and base section easily be removed, as well as the steering wheel assembly, making it easy to disassemble and those parts go into storage. Then you can just watch TV. Multipurpose.

More sketchup wankery this morning. Everyone at work digs this. The control panel artwork is going to be the last thing I worry about, Imma need some help on that for sure. I'm not sure about the ? blocks on the corners but the block foundation, pipe up front, and the flag pole/tv mount are keepers, I think. I was going to make a filing cab so what I think =  :dizzy:

See?  Simple.  Now we're getting somewhere. :applaud:

How about a "?" brick insert in a large square button (http://www.arcadeemulator.net/cgi-bin/shop/cp-app.cgi?usr=51F510592&rnd=8601592&rrc=N&affl=&cip=&act=&aff=&pg=prod&ref=Large+Square+Low+Profile+Pushb&cat=Low+Profile+Illuminated&catstr=HOME:Pushbuttons:Low+Profile+Illuminated), similar to the GGG CDR.

Also, you may want to add a second pipe on the front and/or move the current pipe location if it blocks the wheel mount.

there are 2 wheel mounts. I was thinking that I could have them mount where the ? blocks are on the control panel corners. Too far out?
Looks like that could be too far out -- you might want to bring them in a few inches, assuming there is still enough elbow room for 2 players.   ;D

Throwing it out there but to make room for 2 wheels you might have to put one ? brick in the middle of the CP with the coin button as the bottom of the question mark then angle the two front sides of the CP To act as backing mounts to each of the wheels.

Yeah, you're right, that would be a bit snug. If I mount the wheels where the coin blocks are in that image or out a little more but extend the overall width of the control panel to 30" or 32" and toss those square push buttons out toward the ends, it'll be roomy. The control panel width in the sketchup image is only 24"

I don't quite follow what you're saying. I'm sorry, man. I do like the idea about using a button for the dot in the question mark but it'd have to be a small button or a large question mark. I'm digging the square buttons PL1 linked. With the ? block image as an insert it'll be good.

Apparently I'm slower than usual today because I don't know what a pinball light is. Google isn't helping. On top of the flag pole? I was just going to try and make it look like the game, some kind of sphere. I don't know how to make spheres in sketchup. That's exactly what I was planning on doing. I don't know how to do that with a router but I was going to rig something up to allow me to scrape the pattern out of the mdf. Get out of my head, man.  :lol

Got any examples of how to go about that with a router? I was going to use a piece of metal as a guide and drag something sharp across the board a few billion times, mdf is pretty easy to mangle. A router sound faster/easier.
Seems lilke it would be easier to use brick hardboard/wallboard from Lowes or Menards.   :dunno

Figure with a router it would just be a matter of cutting the rows across with a straight edge or v shape bit and then going back to do the column cuts every few inches offset on each row to make the brick pattern. ( and since it is brick you don't even have to be perfectly straight on the cuts as they have dings in the bricks normally)

That said I think Scott has the easiest idea @ $26 for a 4x8 sheet of 1\4" material it's probably faster and much less time consuming to do it that way - And figure if you build a sturdy inner frame the 1\4" material is probably sturdy enough to use instead of MDF for those sides (saving time and Money !!) and they will even have the brick texture without painting

Don't worry about it LT.  Just me throwing out ideas.  I see now how you are going to mount the wheels.  And Scott beat me to recommending the hardboard from Menards.  I'm wondering also if you want to find an alternative to the steel pipe.  It may be strong enough to support the tv but may be too heavy for the cab itself.

(http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/31X%2BcB57vGL.jpg)  (http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/211gx9iVpkL.jpg)  (http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/21e0mPeWxnL._SL500_AA300_.jpg)  (http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/71w8g5uX9yL._SL1500_.jpg)  (http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/61-%2B2MjJJqL._SL1500_.jpg)

Combine some of those hinges with rubber bumpers (or maybe just t-molding?) on the bottom edge and a quick release pin or a spring-loaded threaded knob like on your steering wheel mount.

A DB-25 will be easier to work with than that HD-15 (VGA) connector -- consider using some old printer cables to save effort on the wiring.

I think this will work out nicely.
Not too shabby for a little scrap 3/4" aluminum strip and a bit of elbow grease. I'll make the grooves a little deeper on the final pieces but this is good enough for a test.

The trick will be in the paint.  Getting a good texture and a nice mix of colors will do wonders towards the brick effect.  I think there are some decking solutions out there that are very thick and could give you good results.

Seems like a good idea to find someone with a CNC to cut the brick/stone pattern pieces.

If you stick to a multiple of 3/4" for the pattern, it will be easier to manually cut/file/blend the patterns into the edges of the front piece.

For the pipes, use a belt sander/sanding block to remove the lettering on a PVC drain cap and put it on the corresponding size pipe.

Use a hole saw to cut the piece the pipes run through and mount a matching second piece on the base to keep the pipes aligned.

Don't know whether this is of any use (maybe for some ideas), but I built this using table legs and tubing for hiding cables:

Not so sure about having the whole front in brick.

How about doing the front like a standard SMB screen and the CP like a cloud level (not shown) screen?

Perhaps the lower 6-10 inches in a stone pattern, followed by bushes, mountains and sky with several levels of floating brick shelves with those pushbuttons positioned in the uppermost layer like the floating shelf in the screencap.

If you use SpaceHedgehog's monitor mount, consider wrapping the left monitor support with 3-D steps and have the flagpole as the right monitor support.

Still as stable as the log burner, still has spots for the wheel mounts, and has the pipe support idea. Has a metric-$%#@ton of bricks but I don't care. Once I start, I'm all in. I'll round those corners on the control panel and base of course. This seems better. At least moving in a better direction.

Keep that critique coming.

1) Motorcycles kick ass.  Have fun.
2) I still like this one but do the following to "fun" it up
    a) change the bricks right below the pipe to the blue stone
    b) do the base in grey stone and lava
    c) do the area above the pipes but below the "ground level" CP as an underwater stage.
3) Disregard all of that, get a piece of gianourmous PVC, do it up to look like a pipe coming out of a brick ground, and put a cocktail machine inside it like barrel of kong
4) Profit.

Sounds good.

Maybe a mashup of an inset underground level (like the warp zone render) for the bottom half and an inset version of the above ground screenshot with a physical piece of pipe extending down from the upper level inset to the underground inset.

Something to consider for sideart.

Left side: Bridge level (2-3 (http://www.mariowiki.com/images/f/fb/World_2-3_SMB.png)?) over an underwater level. (2-2 (http://www.mariowiki.com/images/2/20/World_2-2_SMB.png)?)

Right side: Platform/mushroom level (1-3 (http://www.mariowiki.com/images/3/3c/World_1-3_SMB.png)/4-3 (http://www.mariowiki.com/images/a/ad/SMB43.png)?) over a lava level. (1-4 (http://www.mariowiki.com/images/c/ce/World_1-4_SMB.png)?)

Handy list of levels and worlds available here (http://www.mariowiki.com/Super_Mario_Bros.#List_of_levels).

Click on the desired world# and scroll down for level maps like the links above.

set the background back a bit for that 3d effect.

Yes but with insets for each level (ie. Underground, Water, Sky) and the pipes to the sides like in the other renders rather than 3 pipes in the one inset -- so that the insets are the various levels and tied together with the pipes he has at the sides.

Why don't you work up the name of the cab as "Welcome To The Warp Zone" or just "Warp Zone" instead of using 8-bit graphics. The style you worked up with the pipes going up the side looked so much better.
Title: Re: Mario Pedestal. Another design. #8 by my count. No PVC version.

i think you should do the cast of SMB all dressed up as the cast of The Rocky Horror Pictureshow.  Have Bowser in the Frankenfurhter getup, put some koopahs rocking the Riffraff and Magenta thing, Luigi as Eddie, Mario and the Princess as Brad and Janet, Toad as Dr. Everett Scott.

You can still call the whole thing, "Welcome to the Time Warp" - just redesign sets of Rocky Horror to look like the 8-bit levels you already have.  Dining hall, lab, bedroom, foyer, camera room, whatever.  Then you can use the character sprites all over it acting out key scenes from the movie:

Toad sets the scene, Luigi out of the fridge, Koopa greets the guests, Bowser with Peach, Bowser with Mario etc.

The pipes will represent giant phallus-es...phalli...---Deutsche Frankfurters---.

Louis, you're my homie, bro. I couldn't hate anything you do. I celebrate your creativity and your thrift. While some might throw cash at an issue to solve a problem, you figure it out.

I still prefer the very first version, though. It was simple - just looking at it, you knew it was from SMB. It was subtle, yet looked great. The overall design made it. When you start adding screenshot, it becomes less subtle and loses it's charm.

Just my two cents. At any rate, I'm impressed with what you can do in the program. That alone is worth while.

I like it so far but every time I see that control panel (the artwork anyway) I keep thinking something like this.  Kind of an over world/underworld type thing.  Since you have the pipes and all.  But I'm also thinking that many orange tiles clashes a bit with the blue.  Maybe have the orange ground tiles fade into the blue brick tiles at the halfway point on the top part of the panel.  It's late so I'm rambling a bit but does all that make sense?

I love this pedestal so far, maybe because I have a soft spot for Nintendo. It's just fun.  And that idea of painting the score, and coin count etc is cool. Or at least work it into the vinyl art.

I'm calling it now, we need to have a standalone pedestal category for the 2014 UCA. There's just so many of them this early into the year.

Kind of an over world/underworld type thing.

My thought on it is the actual base can be the underworld, the middle can be the overworld , and the CP could be the cloud level. The pipes would totally make sense in that context.    The progress so far is pretty great, keep it up bro

I'd seriously consider painting.  Have a "stamp" made on a 3D printer and go from there. That or just use vinyl.

make a template , just cut the black area out of a square. Paint the base blue, then use the template to paint the black area

Have you looked at making a guide template with built-in stops?

Chain-drill and smooth a slot (red) the width of a Dremel bit shaft through some MDF and attach stops. (gray)

Use a #194 bit along with the attachment you showed above.

Set the Y-axis of the guide (blue) by putting the bit into position 2 of the template (Dremel switched off) and dropping it into the existing groove -- ensure that position 2 of the template matches the existing groove across the length of the guide.  (Use position 3 if you need the guide on the other side)

Set the X-axis of the template by putting the bit into position 1 of the template (Dremel switched off), dropping it into the existing groove, and clamping the template in place.

Trace through the template in numerical order.

If the template pattern is the right size, the bit will be in the existing slots at each numbered position, allowing you to switch the Dremel off when raising/lowering the cutting part of the bit through the template slot at the start and end of each stone block.   ;D

Scott

EDIT: Change to the template shown below -- extended the top and bottom gray pieces so you can clamp them to the blue piece as shown.

I've got to wait on cutting the brick pattern until I get those square LED buttons. I guess I'm going to order from Suzo

http://na.suzohapp.com/gaming_products/pushbuttons/D54-0004-31 (http://na.suzohapp.com/gaming_products/pushbuttons/D54-0004-31)  or   http://na.suzohapp.com/gaming_products/pushbuttons/57-0004-31 (http://na.suzohapp.com/gaming_products/pushbuttons/57-0004-31)

Kinda leaning toward the low profile
Any reason you're not ordering them from Divemaster here (http://www.arcadeemulator.net/cgi-bin/shop/cp-app.cgi?usr=51F4975147&rnd=8328838&rrc=N&affl=&cip=68.13.130.140&act=&aff=&pg=cat&ref=Low+Profile+Illuminated&catstr=HOME:Pushbuttons)?

$4.94 ea (DM) vs. $8.50 ea. (Happ) for the large square low-profile buttons.   ;D

I'm still on the fence. The low profile one looks pretty sweet and I like it but the regular large square button has more height on the lens and that could make the ? block look a little better, pop out a little more. I'm just nitpicking over items I've never seen in person. Honestly, I kind of need 1 of each so I can put them in place and see which fits best.  :-\   I probably have to order a set of each and use the remaining buttons for a future project or something. Pictures online only help so much.
PM Gary the part number/description for the regulars and ask him if he has any in stock -- if not, he can probably get them fairly quickly from his distributor.

+1 on ordering a set of each from him and saving on shipping.

I almost gave up on this idea because ever bit I tried to use was cutting into the template. So I thought about it and since MDF is easy to scrape, why not flip the bit around and just let the friction wear it down? It keeps the bit from eating away at the metal and it actually worked.  :lol
The idea is to keep the cutting surface below the metal template so the smooth shaft of the bit traces the outline.  ;D

Add some 1/4" plywood under the metal template and you'll have a little more wiggle room for the cutting surface of the bit between the MDF and the template.

  Template                Bit
metal template |  smooth shaft
1/4 plywood    |   wiggle room for smooth shaft and a bit of cutting surface
MDF                 |   cutting surface

Thank you PL1.
Always glad to assist.

Keep up the outstanding work.

He's still gallivanting across the European countryside as far as I know. We spoke through PM back in the beginning of March. I asked him if he could work his flash game magic on Kaboom for me, the way he did with the Helicopter game. He said he'd be happy to take a look at it once he's back in the US. Said it'd be a few months.

:dunno  He should be popping back up sooner or later. I bet he's dying to build something. He'll have something cool in the works, no doubt. He's an addicted builder like the rest of us.

Bugggutty Booo!

I'm back in California, 8 months or something like that abroad. Had a lot of fun. Been here 4 days now.

Glad to be missed

I hope to build something, rented a place up in North Lake Tahoe for the next couple of months but will be up and down from Sacramento to there so maybe I can squeeze in a build. I fixed up and beffed up the battery on a power wheels for my nephew so there's something!

I will be going back to Europe in a few months as well, started an eBay business and it has been working out for me so no need to have roots anywhere.

The circles represent the base of the Dremel attachment that Louis Tully talked about here (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,138220.msg1441921.html#msg1441921).

(http://mdm.boschwebservices.com/files/r19899v15.jpg)  (http://i577.photobucket.com/albums/ss219/Louis_Tully/Wii%20Mario%20Kart/IMAG2260.jpg)

Not sure about the exact size since I don't have that attachment.   :dunno

You might be able to use sketchup or another graphics program to tile the stone pattern on the desired floorplan and tile the bricks on the walls using the same size squares.

Then you can resize the stone+brick squares to see how well the different sizes work.

That looks to be a hawk moth and stick bug.

Hawk moth i think comes from the big ass horn worm, 3 of these mutilated a tomato plant i had, they were about 1/2" in diameter and about 3-4" long and strong, they has little clasps for feet and wouldnt let go of the branch.

One of these flew into my neighbors car, it was so big she thought it was a bat.

I have to admit... I did a bit of eye rolling as you mulled your decision for artwork/layout - but now that you've gotten this far - I don't blame you one bit.  This isn't a matter of peeling off some art - this is a LOT of blood, sweat and tears.  Good job.

Back in the gameboy days i was addicted to Tetris (263 lines before i realised it was becoming an addiction) and then i remember having dreams about dropping shapes.

After all that routing i can only guess the crazy Mario brick trips you've experienced!

Seriously amazing work. Love it when you see an off the wall idea come alive and this looks ridiculously good.  :applaud:

I'm always on the lookout for a Luna Moth (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Actias_luna). I've only ever seen one and it was a long time ago. It was in flight the whole time and I couldn't catch it. But they look badass.

:o :o :o :o AWESOME! Man, I'm so jealous. We need to move.

What state are you in?  Lunas are found in every state east of the Mississippi and a few west.  If you're north of the mason dixon they only brood once a year, in the south they'll be out twice or sometimes three times.  If you're in a hot spot just take a high powered flashlight out after midnight and shine the trees.  Here's a map of recent sightings by county (about halfway down the page).  Yes, I'm kind of a bug nut ;)

In some of the pics you can read the print on the pipes --- It shows they are 3" and he bought the cheaper ones as they are marked not for Pressure so are less expensive than those designed to hold high water pressure. (since there is no need for the more expensive stuff in this application ! )

PROTIP: To ensure that they fit together properly, use the same "schedule" pipe and fittings. ("SCH 40" in pic below)

Maybe if you used some black plastic knobs from the hardware isle at Home Depot and painted it like black (which your probably planing on anyways...)  :dunno

+1. Surely there's some alternate method of securely attaching those wheel brackets? The wingnuts are pretty jarring, and like Chance hinted, I think it detracts from all the great stuff you've got going on.

The company to look at is Dimco Gray (http://dimcogray.com/products/knobs-handles).

Their website makes it easy to narrow down knob styles and search for specific thread sizes.

Plug the desired part number into Amazon FTW.

Add to that:
1. A metric butt-load of bookmarked vendors/products/calculators gathered over years of reading/planning

:dunno Plastidip and paint pretty much give the same result visually and the T-screws I've got work just as well as knobs would. You'd have to be on the floor looking up at them to notice and you can't even see that low from a sitting position. Besides, 99% of the time the cab will look like this.

And when it's painted black, those holes will blend. It seems silly to spend more time and money on this part when it's going to look weird as ---steaming pile of meadow muffin--- anyway because the Wii stuff is white and nothing else on this build is.   :lol

It'll just be a fun add-on when the urge hits.

Seems like the routed areas wouldn't be deep enough to provide solid grout -- one good bump and it would probably shatter.

Or do a wash - after painting all green mix up black paint and half water then use a wet rag and a dry rag to sponge it on and off all the high points.  Should've taken 20min.

Not well, do the base coat in oil and then do the washes in a water based and then top coat it if you like.  Oils don't wash as well.  With water based washes you can get all the black off the high areas very easily while flooding the lows.

I wish the corner pipes had larger connectors so that they'd look more like the sketchup image but... I dunno.

Maybe a 3" to 4" adapter would work

Yeah, I looked at those when I was there. The top part looked perfect but the base fits over the pipe and that would look weird. Kinda making a double expanding top part. I dunno. I probably should have tried to make it out of wood but oh well. It doesn't really bother me enough to change it. At the moment. They're removable so swapping them out, down the road, won't be difficult at all if I change my mind.

Hmm - they also have 2" to 4" -- figure that way the 2" would fit inside the 3" pipe and only the 4" would be seen.

lol Yeah, I also tried that. The right angle edge of the 3" looks weird resting on the angled edge of the 2~4 piece. Plus, I'd have to figure out some way to get the 2" part to stay in place inside the 3" part, all the while trying to make the whole thing not look crappy. I'm right there with you though. With the available pieces of PVC they had there, I think what I ended up with is about as good as it gets.

Of course, PL1 could pop in here and whip out his linktionary and show me that I've ---fouled up beyond all recognition--- up, so... there we are.  :lol
To center the 2" in the 3", you can use a reducer bushing (http://www.menards.com/main/plumbing/rough-plumbing/pipe-tubing-fittings/fittings/pvc-fittings/pvc-dwv-fittings/3-x-2-reducing-bushing/p-1390908-c-9383.htm) or concentric holesaw holes in wood.

First use the one that fits the 3", then the one for the 2".   ;D

To angle the base pipe to mate better with the 2" - 4" adapter, make a router jig like below.

It is made of 1/8" hardboard (white) and two pieces of 1" x 4" forming a 90 degree angle.

The 1" x 4" with the pencil line is not connected to the jig.

For your jig, make a hole for the bit in the "Trim on the inside" position.

Position the bit to angle/trim the inside of the pipe, leaving a small area un-trimmed as you press the pipe into the 90 degree angle and turn it.

Once it is properly trimmed, you should be able to glue the 2" - 4" adapter in place.

a slightly lowertech solution to the top of the pipes.

Just get a piece of pipe the same size as the top.
cut a piece the same height.
then cut a line vertically.
fit it over the existing piece
hide the gap in an unseen area.

basically make a letter C and put it around the existing top.

see attached pictures. cut on the blackline, fit it over the top of the pipe, hide the gap in the back.  Like a letter C going around the pipe.

In the second pic, imagine the O is the existing top, and the C is the new piece of pipe. obviously not to scale and the gap wont be that large.

The fact that he asked implies that he was not fully satisfied with the current setup.   :dunno

It's not game accurate, but feeding some LED's up the bottom of those warp pipes and replacing the tops with some diffused plexi covers would look the shnizzle (I have followed pretty closely, but sorry if this was already mentioned).

Either way, build looks very cool, lots of attention to detail

White and green sheets of acrylic laser cut into the flag shapes and the skull to finish it off....

The acrylic would be too sticky. Mario won't be able to slide down it as easily.

Well considering he was going to paint it, i would think paint would be sticker than acrylic, I wasn't aware he was going to have a Mario figurine sliding up and down the pole.  You could also place felt on the touching parts of the figurine and it would slide all the same.

Just an idea though....considering the game has a multicolor pole...rgb would bring that authenticity to the table as well.

I would of gots me some of these and put a rgb led through it for the pole.

The acrylic would be too sticky. Mario won't be able to slide down it as easily.

oh....in that case :) :lol :laugh2: :lol  :) :-\ >:D :-* :oldman..... :tool:.......

:lol  I could probably rig something up to get a moving Mario in there somewhere. But with the proportions of the flag... that'd be a bigass Mario.

We could try to find this dude's contact info and see if he's up for a little side work?

Princess Peach on the other hand  >:D

Gotta say this is some impressive out of the box thinking and work.  Gotta love the detail on the Brickwork.  Anybody who knows Mario bros will instantly recognise it.

I think Rick is ---smurfing--- with you, bro.

Sure, burst the poor guy's bubble when he went to so much trouble to figure out the logistics of pole-dancin' Mario.

>:D

And R.I.P. Cap'n Lou.

For the love of God, please don't add any --smurfing-- toys to this build. There's a reason why we laugh at the this mofo...

What you have here is great - outstanding even! No need to knock it down a notch. My opinion.

You should be ashamed of yourself, LT!!   >:D

I mean did you really have to leave so many of us curled up in the fetal position, rocking back-and-forth, sucking a thumb, tugging on an earlobe, and repeatedly mumbling, "My happy place . . .  My happy place. . ." as we weep with despair at ever reaching this level of build awesomeness -- or is that just me?   :laugh2:

Screen is too small.

Or at least some kind of bezel around the TV to hide the black sides.  Even if it is just cardboard and double sided tape.

As far as the build itself, It looks great!  Those clouds in the CP art look awesome with the reflectiveness that the plexi produces.  Almost looks real.

LT, it's a great job.  Well done!

If you ever wake up in the night and find yourself missing those hours upon hours of routing and inking in lines I might suggest that you use the Deviant art (which is nice) as a scratch template with an awl and then carve in that design to the CP.  It would be nice to have the same paint and carve treatment up top as you do on the rest of the build and would really put the whole thing over the top.  I mean, these things are never really done right?  RIGHT?

I mean, you could recut the CP, do it at 1" thick or however big the squares are and run it around the boarder as well...food for thought >:)

The artwork is the bomb but the highlight of your build are those freaking bricks.  Well worth the hours you sent making them.  Pure awesome.

Many thanks go out to Chemonox on deviantart for hooking me up with this amazing control panel artwork. It's the highlight of the build imo. I don't even know the guy, just sent him a message about trying to work out something for this project and he tweaked an existing image to my liking for free. What a badass. Thanks, man.

I have some questions about the warp zone letters, as might do something similar:
How big (or small) are they and what size is roughly the thinnest part? How did you cut them? Was it easy to do?

Depending on exactly what you are needing for letters, I have access to a laser cutter that could make super crisp letters.  We usually use 1/4" birch plywood.

Yeah, this is about as eye catching as builds get. I know you always make great builds, Louis, but was silently dreading that some "modern mario" was gonna sneak in because of the abundant supply of crisp high rez art. SMB1 head to toe, but with a 3d twist. I agree with yotsuya about the action figures looking weird, but simply because they are a little too modern feeling. No matter what, I feel you really took a risky concept and made it posh as well as fun. This would look good on display at the Nintendo Headquarters.

What would fit though? I'm no good with graphic design/art. You can hop back a few pages and see that's an understatement. Surround the monitor with more clouds and maybe toss in one of those vines on one side of the tv? With a row of bricks and coins along the top? I don't know? I could always just hot-glue Mario and the Goomba to the top of the tv.   ;)

Maybe just a Nintendo Logo to cover up the Vizio logo - One other minor suggestion Perhaps cutout a section of the Flagpole where the TV mounts and run the cables down inside the pole rather than alongside it to hide the cables
Title: Re: Mario Pedestal. Finished. (Bezel assistance?)
Post by: pbj on August 20, 2014, 11:20:40 am
I think the idea of bezel art on a flat screen is pretty stupid, personally, but you definitely need to drill a hole in that pole and drop the cables through that.

Agreed. On the flatscreen TV I have in my gameroom, I just put a sticker over the brand logo. You don't need a full bezel, per se.

If you want to do a bezel, how about something shaped like a cartoon- or videogame-cloud, bigger than the monitor so you get the actual shape of the cloud ?

You would have then : Warp zone --> playfield --> cloud --> uh, a real big pole that goes through the clouds

Do you find having the wheels mounted increases the playability?  I have heard/read criticism that the sensitivity and accuracy of the turning wasn't as realistic as it should have been.  *shrug* I'm still trying to find the game at a bargain so I've played less than an hours worth of time.
