Title: Who wants a serial plate?
Post by: CoryBee on December 09, 2012, 04:56:21 am
Tried my hand at making serial plates, some people said they wanted one or to make a quick picture-tutorial.

They aren't thick, in fact they are just soda can pieces. If anyone wants one I will give it for free, just pay postage (should only be .50¢ to a $1 - or any donations )

I need at least 4 requests as to not waste any of the sticker paper.

I think they look awesome, some people may not think I did a good job or I should use thicker aluminum (I agree with the thicker part) but they wont break the bank so you decide.

This is for me too, will give me more practice at it. I will also get better aluminum when I come across something worth while to use in the soda cans place.

Thanks CoryDee, great work!
I actually stole the one from DrCheks Project. (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,122438.40.html)
I just saved the pic of his plate that he posted and using Paint I modified it to show what I wanted.
It turned out pretty good, except I had a round a bout getting the transparent adhesive paper.
I couldnt find the 8X10 (regular letter size) like the video showed, so I tried transparent shipping labels. (Walmart Avery 38863 2" X 4")
I wasted a lot of regular paper getting the pics to line up with the labels, but I think I finally got it.
Here is a sneak preview:

Edit: To anyone wanting one of these, CoryDee's offer is a good one. They can be a pain getting everything set up, and of course you have to buy a whole pack of the transparent sticker paper.
Good job CoryDee!!  :applaud:

Thanks DaOld Man

I like your rage build, more than a little even, Your serial plate looks great!

What did you use for the aluminum? I will be going thicker, but for now it is a good way to hand out some without needing to ask for much in return,a nd using what I have on hand.

I wonder how the brass would look like with this technique

The only thing I dont like is the paper, or at least the labels I used, are not exactly clear. Mine have a cloudy look to them. I read internet comments about the full page kind that you are using and I read the same comments about it. Does anyone know of any brands that are purely clear?
Title: Re: Who wants a serial plate?
Post by: drventure on December 12, 2012, 09:24:23 am
With brass, you print the image in reverse with heavy ink on glossy photo paper, then immediately use an iron to transfer it to the brass plate.

Once it's dried, you immerse the plate in an electrolytic solution (I don't remember what) and leave it there as it slowly etches. Takes a few days. There's some projects up on maker and instructables that illustrate it.

Just one of those things I haven't yet got to try myself. But they get some pretty nice results from it.

The cloudy-ness seems to go away when the clear coat soaks into the paper.

Doctor
Seems almost identical to toner transfer pcb etching

anyone else up to help me fill this thing? scotty is already having me do some experimenting

Well, with the labels I used (Avery 38863 Clear easy Peel Shipping Labels),
the cloudiness does not seem to go away when painted with clear enamel (Rust-oleum crystal clear enamel).
I couldnt find the recommended clear coat the video called for, so I used the clear enamel, which looks very clear when sprayed on the aluminum sheet.
Here are a couple of pics.
First is a label on a white sheet of paper with colored lines running under the label. No clear coat.
You can definitely see the label even against the white sheet background.
The second pic is some more labels I printed out and stuck to the aluminum, then one coat of clear coat.
Both pics taken in bright sunlight.
It would be a lot better if these labels were really clear.
Title: Re: Who wants a serial plate?
Post by: CoryBee on December 12, 2012, 10:05:44 am
Yea those don't look clear at all, maybe a smokey white.....

I used "Avery 18665 Clear Inkjet Labels" and a "Rustoleum Clear Glossy Spray"

When I print these out I am going to make a little tutorial with the same marker thing you did to show how clear. The cloudy-ness in these ones were very minimal.

It would help me a lot if you can post a pic with some left over scrap sticker over the colored bars on white paper. I may have to travel to the big city and get what you are using. I can still use the back of my aluminum sheet for new stickers, if I think it will greatly improve the looks.
Thanks.

Anytime good sir!

I will add that to the experimenting. You don't like the eBay?

Also there isn't enough light in your picture to tell if the aluminum is showing through well.....

Yeah I know, but you can plainly see the edges of the label against the aluminum. The "clear" parts of the label that will remain with the tag after cutting out look the same way.

I would love one, thanks!  Just not sure what to put on it... how soon do you need the specifics?

Jumpman & Jumpman Jr.  are old C-64 / Atari / Apple IIe, etc. games.  They were inspired by Donkey Kong, though they play very differently.  Many of the levels are essentially puzzles.  Here is a great example:

Figurit Solutions (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PAv_eq7Q4sY#)

They're on my short list of all-time favorite C-64 games.  My idea is to build a cabinet as if Jumpman (or, in the case, Jr.) had been an arcade release.  It will be sort of a platformer version of the shmups-focused bartops that seem popular.

Jumpman Junior
Made in USA by Epyx & Randy Glover
Model No. JM-JR-1
Serial No. 000064
(and then all the standard electrical ratings)

Would that work?

Also I dont know if anyone has mentioned that street signs cut with a metal jigsaw would be perfect media for this plate.
Title: Re: Who wants a serial plate?
Post by: CoryBee on December 12, 2012, 11:29:55 pm
PM'd

Cutting aluminum (for me anyway) has left serrated edges, which with my tools are impossible to clean up. So a street sign is pretty thick and I don't know if that is the thickness I would want or the effort to acquire said street sign  ;)

I figure just using some aluminum sheeting from Lowe's or Home Depot will do the trick. Going to plow through these with aluminum cans as to hand out a few to some awesome BYOAC fellas.

DaOld...you shouldn't have to do anything to get the printer to line up the labels.  Just go to avery's web site and get the template file for the label number and you can download a word processing template (for word or whatever) that will allow you to create your labels correctly.  Then, in word (or whatever), do a file, new then choose from template.

Thanks, Cory.

Does the adhesive look wierd/splotchy when you hold it up and look through it without a diffuser?

It's almost impossible to take pictures that show this, so a quick eyeball test + your opinion would be great.

Hard to avoid scratching the printing when even the ridges of your fingerprints can do that.

I use this method (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,122856.msg1304926.html#msg1304926) to keep from doing that with inserts on transparency media.

You might be able to laminate another layer of label over the printed part before applying it to the button if you want to use them on normal buttons.   :dunno

Scotty man, tried to put another piece of the clear label over a printed serial plate and the foggyness showed up too much for my tastes. Just using a shirt to rub it on worked out well this time.

I wonder if your plates would flatten out better if you heated them in the cook oven (not microwave) for about 10 minutes at around 180 degrees, then before they cool clamp them like in your above method.
I dont know what temp mdf ignites at, so it might take some strict supervision.

Yea I don't trust the adhesives used in MDF, wouldn't bake that. Formaldehyde and what have you are probably lurking in there.

I need two pieces of metal to clamp them in between......

the problem with cans is they're cold extruded.  A flat sheet is basically punched from the bottom to create the can.  So, it's not a function of rolling.  Getting them flat is miserable for that reason.  And, since they're usually cold-extruded (meaning the alu sheet is at room temp when the die is pressed through it), the molecules are oriented that way for good.

Oh what the Hell, I'll take you up on the offer of one or two if there's still space. It'd be the bee's knees if you can find a "wintery" font. It's a bit of an homage to my father when he competed at IOC sanctioned events. The last time he raced was in the winter competition in Berchtesgaden before he was seriously injured. Doubt if it helps much but he was a member of the USSA and US Ski Team (http://usskiteam.com/) back in the day. But that should help to get you an idea of what kind of font I'm after.

I don't really have a name but I've been using ICBC
Model should probably be something along the lines of ICBC-W-USA or ICBC-W-USSA
Serial... I guess shouldn't technically be a serial so... maybe P0001 or something official looking.
(P == prototype if one must ask. I don't actually to ever expect to make another like it. :dunno)

It looks like you're just taking the power requirements out of thin air. Which is just as well, I have no idea yet what the power requirements yet.

Sent you a PM, not quite sure what you want the serial plates for....You have a recent build or...?

The power requirements are sent to me by the members. On my bartops I pull them from the DC Power Brick for each individual one I use. You can do the same with a computer power supply as well.

Taking orders for more plates, Jammin0 says he loves his so I hope to use up the rest of my supplies helping BYOAC members.

It is now $2 for a serial plate, .50 was for a trial run. If you are interested mention here and\or PM me.

I will be switching to a thicker material if I can find something that is suitable with the tools I have. That would be more expensive though.

Actually, 2 bux would be excellent if you could print mine out.  I've already modded the OG to my liking (as seen on the TUT post).  Since I really only need one or 2, I'd rather not invest the 13 bux into the Avery transparencies and then never use the rest...

Lemme know if you have room for mine.  Hope that paypal is cool:

Yea there is room, just started lining them up. Only 2 - 3 confirmed so far. Prefer 8 plates at once to use up most of the space but we will see.

Do you want me to center your Model & Serial numbers?

PS: I don't drink soda, well often anyways, root beer being the exception with vanilla ice cream. As you will notice most of them are from A&W cans.

Not trying to be anal, but you do know that 15 amps at 120 volts is approx 1800 watts?
Not that it matters really, but you might want to adjust the amps and or watts a little.
A 400 watt PC power supply draws approx. 3.5 amps at 120 VAC. (Thats with the power supply fully loaded.)

(Volts * Amps =Watts  Watts / Volts= Amps)

Thanks.  I wasn't really paying too much attention to the numbers, rather trying to fit in all the family numbers and stuff in the name and serial number.   I'll adjust it.

i'm sure somewhere you could find a punch set with numbers on it that you could punch the numbers in the metal for that little more authentic look.

Looking spiffy guys, glad my addition of a "Logo" or "Character" to the left caught on, I really like the way it looks with this.

What I did to make life easier with GIMP was to only change the text than export it as a high rez png file. Adding the "Logo" or special texts in Photoshop. Super simple stuffs.

Hopefully Jammin0 will get a better camera soon, but I thought I would share the extra christmas serial plate I made for him (hopefully he uses it). It is my take on a dedication plate for underneath the main plate. Dedication goes to the main game characters or what-have-you.

Sorry for the super crappy rez picture of it, couldn't fine the main png file for it to upload (you get the idea)

So whoever wants one should send me PM with their GIMP\Photoshop files of their Serial and\or dedication plates. Would like to print these out and get everything flattened out.

edit: If you want to wait on pictures from someone who received them already this is fine. They are thin, but I think they look really good. Also, has everyone else received theirs yet??

Cory, I haven't read the whole thread but if it's been mentioned my bad.

Home depot sells aluminum.  Really thin stuff, great for this.  It's like $8 for a 1 or 2 foot square sheet.  That should be enough to do like what, 20 of these or something?  I'm pretty sure you can get it thin enough to still tackle with whatever you're cutting with.  Take your scissors into the store and try it out first, they can't though you out for trying the metal.  It's a state law.  Sure it's not aluminum can free but then again you can take pride in the fact that you aren't selling aluminum cans and you don't have to flatten them because the sheets are pre-flattened.  That puts your price point at a quarter per for the metal.  Not too shabby.

Other than that you're running a bang up service and it's nice to see this personalized touch catching on.

My procrastination gets the best of me too often. Been telling myself to go and check HD for some aluminum sheeting, I know it will beat out these cans. In fact, that comment tipped the edge for me. I am going to go get some of this A.S.A.P.

This way is also less work in shaping the metal so I wont increase the price for them for the people who already placed their orders with me.

Thanks for the compliment, I think it is the final straw on our homebrew "TimeMachines" that makes it into something special. A bit of authenticity if you will.

Anyways, I will update you all on the material I come up with. Until then keep the designs coming!

Okay peoples.

$4.00 per plate, for now, with proper aluminum.

Hopefully this seems fair and still allows a cheap price, and still allows me to help out the members.

(I am not taking into account the future medical costs of me inhaling clear coat :laugh2:)

If you already sent me money than you are golden :D

This way I produce a better product. I will also try to provide the screws, no guarantee though. If they turn out really well "then" I will offer new prints for the last batch that was on cans for $1 each.

edit: used "than" instead of "then"

HAHA

What was yours again? They are printed and cut out by the way.

Should have charged $20 for these after all the cutting. HD didn't have the aluminum sheets so I went with what they had. Thin steel sheets, a bit thicker than I thought it would be but these turned out great. Hefty ---daisies--- as well, much better than the soda cans.

I just was at Home Depot the other day and saw in the sign area that there is some pretty thin metal.  I grabbed a caution sign that was a lot thinner than the steel sheet and I think it cost $1.40 or something.  I would say it is about twice as thick as soda can.

What was the caution sign for?

And thanks, I had asked them about it and there is another home depot in my area that carries the aluminum I am looking for. These turned out pretty good though so we will see how you all like them.

Attached is a NEO GEO MVS serial plate that I did up quick as a reference to make my own version.

All the wording and stuff matches the original, even the parts that are incorrect.
(most noteably, the lack of a period after COMPUTING DEVICE)
The font and spacing aren't perfect, but they're not too far off.

I only turned up a couple pics of them online, so I'm putting it here as a reference for anyone else who might want to make their own.

I still don't know the actual dimensions.
                         ???
If anyone knows, please let me know.

The ones I attached are fairly low res.
They'll come out to just over 4" wide at 200dpi, but I don't know what size the original was.

Depending on quality and durability, I'd say if you can swing it, I'd charge about $10 - $15 per.  The cost to get the labels and metal would be probably $25 investment, so it's still appealing to the consumer and you'll be making a couple hundy a week.

Depending on quality and durability, I'd say if you can swing it, I'd charge about $10 - $15 per.  The cost to get the labels and metal would be probably $25 investment, so it's still appealing to the consumer and you'll be making a couple hundy a week.

AJ

Haha, we will see if you guys like them. Jammin0 was pretty pumped to get his and those were the soda can versions.

I doubt there is even a market for that much a week  ;D let alone the fact I have a regular tech job to tend to.

Feel like I'm derailing a little bit but I thought I would post these little guys I just got in the mail from Cory.  Actually he got me the original ones made of soda cans and before I could get them on the thicker version showed up today in the mail.  A nice little surprise because I didn't know they were coming.  Anyway, Thanks dude.  I'm happy with them.

OK, I'm a bit pissed, but I have a funny story.  First of all, this in no way is Corybee's fault.  I want to state that immediately.  I'm pissed at the Sacramento mail sorting facility.

So, anywhoo...I've been watching y'all get your amazing serial plates...dreaming of the day that I can install them on 2 arcades as the complete and last final touch.  Knowing that I'm an entire continent away, I waited and waited.

So, I got home last night and there was an envelope....a TORN envelope in a plastic bag covered in USPS-speak about how they process 7 million pieces of mail and yada, yada...sometimes things happen, yada...

My heart sank.  I have relatives coming in tomorrow and wanted to finish "Fistful of Quarter" for my father in law before they got here.

So, I gingerly feel through the baggie and there's no way in hell there's metal plates in there.  The envelope is clearly marked by Coreybee...but it is completely torn in half, right down the middle.  Upon opening the baggie to see what's left of whatever is in there, I notice a note/letter.

So, I open up the letter and begin reading.  It's a letter from a con in jail to one of his bros about working out, the conditions of the jail, etc. WTF?!?!?!

I know Cory's out of the country for a WHILE, so this probably won't get fixed for some months...but I though it interesting that this type of stuff only happens to me.  :afro:

Here's how it was delivered:

Here's all the USPS crap that basically says there's nothing I can do about it:

:censored: :censored: :censored: :censored: :censored: :censored: :censored:

Anyway, I got to learn a bit about northern california jail systems, etc.

I get back to the good ol' USofA on the 20th. Can do another run of 8 or so if there is interested. Need to remake Mc's plates anyways.

On another note, was at Dublin's trinity university, lo and behold there was a Fix-It-Felix cab in their Science Gallery......but the place was closed to the public...... :censored:

Haven't been able to play one and accross the pond I find it, but cannot even examine it. Just my luck.

Need to find a more efficient way of cutting these plates. I think the extra thickness on them give it a more professional feel to it, just a pain in the arse.

What do you think Jammin0? Since you got both. Or Dodd, is the thickness to your liking??  :laugh2:
Title: Re: Who wants a serial plate?
Post by: jammin0 on February 01, 2013, 02:10:22 pm
Thicker is definitely better.  I filed the edges a bit when I got mine because they were a little sharp but everything else about the thicker is better.

Did you ever look at those caution signs at home depot?  I picked one up because they were super cheap and I just started messing around to see how workable it is and I am able to cut it using a straight edge and razor blade.  I don't think it is straight aluminum or steel.  Has kind of a little bit of a silver/bronze color to it.

I don't have a file but I will remember that when I make another batch.

As for the tree stumps, I have no idea. I saw the book of kells though (they lie to the tourists, it isn't the actual book - a fake it is! My host is a PHD student there)

Will add the stumps to my "things to visit" list, thanks.

Keep in mind guys I wasn't trying to make any money off of this, just using the extra supplies to provide you fine fellas with something to accent your cabinets.

The ten is pretty much for labor, when I run out of supplies it will be more; if I decide to continue to make them. The two of you who donated generously for your plates, thank you very much!

I have one sheet of steel left that can probably fit 8 - 12 plates. So come and get em' while they last.

alright fellas, need those who want a plate to send me a PM with your design ideas or the gimp\photoshop file so I can add it  to the print page. I am going to try and get Mcseforsale his plates to him since he is over-due, all he got was a prison letter last time.

I will remind you, after this print I will have to increase the price (need more materials)...probably to $15 where it will stay indefinitely. I would give them for free if I could, but time is a luxury.

If I can fill 8 spots I will give one away for free to a random member who places an order

seriously though, what must i do to get one of these made, serial number 1102201210151983 (release date for Wreck it Ralph and my Birth date 'cause i built the cab it's going on') I've put so much time into this Fix It Felix Project that im dreaming about it, helping Sjaak with sprites and building a cab at the same time, it's driving me bonkers, but this plate would be like icing on the cake.

I was actually thinking of doing another run of these, higher quality metal of course. I wouldn't go back to making them with soda cans after I found a cheap source of steel.

Making one for the Helicopter game. Anyone else who wants one speak up now because I might not be making them for several if not a lot of months away after this batch.

$15 for one

" I won't put any company logos on them unless you own the company or have written permission from the company to use their logo. I definitely don't want to promote counterfeits."

So not sure if he'd require written permissions before he'd be willing to produce them using any Arcade game company logo's, trademarked names, etc.

Hi, I am currently building a copy of the Little Ms. Pac-Man that Griffindodd (Maximus) built. I am almost done with it but could use a serial plate. If you are able to make me one, could I basically get a copy of what you made for him, with two minor changes:

1 - instead of where it says Griffin Dodd & Co., Ltd.
      change it to:
      Designed by Griffin Dodd
      Built by Weizguy

2 - SERIAL NO. WEI-00001

Very interesting work! I'm just going to reply here, so I remember to check back when I need this. Nice one, Corybee! (BTW, Reddit sent me here.)

Hey corybee,

Any chance of exporting one of your wonderful serial plates to the UK for my Williams-inspired bartop ?

If so, could you give me a quote please ?

Did the experiment for ya scotty boy.

Stuck to acrylic, and lighted underneath with an led strip section. Diffused by a piece of printer paper.

Stuck on a button, they are meant to be inserts I know. Also scratched it while rubbing it on  :blah:

Can you make some for black buttons?

If you want white icons on black buttons, you might want to check out the vinyl cutouts here (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,130477.0.html) by slammedniss.
