- One credit only!

- Trip select and Round select must be off!

- No continues or adding credits!

- No MAME cheats!

- Last day is Friday September 28th (11:59:59pm Pacific Daylight Time), 2012.

- High score wins.

- No savestates, savestate practices, etc. during the round.

- MAME INP recordings are encouraged but optional.

- A screenshot is required to enter a score (press F12 to save screenshot showing your final score) or take a photo of the game screen.

- If you're a MARP competitor on this title, keep in mind this is just a friendly competition among forum members, so maybe you shouldn't enter. However, if you're a forum member and this is a game you're good at and nobody knows about it, this is your time to shine!

- Even if you don't have a competitive score or if you don't *think* that you have a competitive score, please post it anyway to keep the thread fun & to give everybody a good sense of score ranges.

- Please make sure your scores are from games that take place during the competition period (no posting your best score from last year, etc.).

- Use of autofire or other non-standard hacks within MAME or your PC's OS are not allowed.  No program or other person or entity of any sort may manipulate your controls during your game.  Coaching & back-seat driving is fine as long as the party doesn't directly influence the game or controls.

- If you can beat any of the high scores from the previous competitions, you can submit your score to the BYOAC High Game Scoreboard.

Good luck!

Tips:

- The game is easier to play using buttons for left-right movement rather than a joystick

- Some fire hydrants can be pushed back to give Pac-man a hard-hat that protects him from falling mini-ghosts.

- Jumping at the right moment just before the end of a level can give you a secret bonus up to 7650 points!

- Watch out for flying bonus items that give extra lives, and points

3 weeks? That's a little excessive, no? Will people be able to stomach that much Pac-Land?

Thanks for the tip about button use instead of joystick.   Now I can complete the first stage without running out of time! ;D

I got pretty close to 30k after a few games.

There are *tons* of little secrets & such. Check out YouTube. I can't reproduce all of them and some I can reproduce only sometimes.

I can't for the life of me figure out how to use the springboard to jump over the swimming pool. I fall far short. What's the trick?

I probably got the time limit wrong. I thought it was three weeks going on previous competition dates. How long is it normally? I'll change it.

Rapidly tap the move button and the jump button at the same time.

Does that work for the 2nd level spring board pools?   There is an extra long one that I have not been able to clear yet.

Here is my first decent run (55,480).   I was able to make it to the 2nd level on the first pacman.   The only special item that I used was the hat.   You need to push the hydrant to the left after the first power pellet to get hat.

I initially played a few games of the Midway version of Pacland.   I noticed something kind of funny.   The Midway version, the building at the break is a church with a cross but Pacland World version does not have the cross.

I've managed to do the extra long pools that way. It is tricky though.

I'm generally not a fan of side-scrollers (Moon Patrol is a distinct exception), but I may get into this. Here's a beginning score.

I was about to say this game sucks ass....and then I remembered someone talking about some tip or trick - OH, buttons instead of stick. I dunnoooo. But it worked some, I made it past the pool, and I got my shoes. Died right after that.

I've never played this game even though it's on my cab. thought I'd give it a go. I have to use the joystick though. The two buttons I could map it to are a bit far apart...

woot! finally get to put my name in (",)

Nobody has gotten the 80,000 point bonus?

Quote
Round 2 - The Forest : the first 'cheat' is achieved by pushing the second cactus back - giving you 80,000 points and transporting you to your house at the end of level two. If this doesn't work then try the second, third and fourth logs in the woods. The machine randomly chooses one of these (pushing the logs only works if you haven't died and you have 15,000 points).

I tried a few time early on and could not get it.   I just tried again and can get it most of the time now.   104k

This is getting humorous. kixfan (almost) always upping the ante.

I've been doing other things than play games, so I guess it's time I start up the rig....

Okay, better - I got home, and the next game I got the 80k bonus - but it doesn't mean I'm any good. I just did well on my second game. I couldn't make the second pond jump on level 9 (I recall now I was trying to push run and jump Track and Field style - oops). Funny game bug. It not only took me home of level 8, but then started me right at the pond jump of level 9.

5 days and no replies - had to do something about that.  I think what hurts the most are the stupid deaths you know you can avoid but often don't..

Nice score Tafoid!   I have 2 trouble areas, jumping the lake and the section where you have to jump from rock column to clouds.   I've had a few games where I lost all my guys in one spot.

Why don't we go to one week per title instead of 2?

Originally, a week seemed too short for people to get in some time. We can try it, though.

Taffy's another winna!

Why don't we go to one week per title instead of 2?

Yep, one week is definitely too short. Two or three weeks is fine. What's the rush?

I would say 1 week is too short but I know sometimes 2 weeks is too long on a game that the high score is too high for others to compete or just lack of interest.    The reason I like this these competitions is because it gives you a chance to play games you would never usually play.   The current competition is a great example of is.   Here is a couple of changes we could look discuss...

1. how about a flat 10 day competition?
2. Based on the number of different people posting scores or the number of lead changes the competition could be extended a day or 2.   That way if no one is playing we move on.

Just my 2 cents!

How about we keep two weeks, but run two contests at a time.

Like for the next contest run both Final Fight and Frenzy.

Interesting I posted the question regarding time limit in very second post and no one said a word, now the lenght of the competition is all the rage. I say you guys suck it up and let it run another week, since no one complained earlier!

How about we both let this one run another week AND start a second 2 week contest. That way we can run two at once, but only have one ending each week.

I would only like to see 2 competitions at once if the 2nd game would only be reruns of other competitions that some of us may not have had a chance to compete in.    My only concern is that with 2 games at once that some people may not even try the other game.

Why not have the second contest rerun the original set of contests from the very beginning in order. Call it High Score Rerun Competion.

I thought that's what this thread http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,113948.0.html (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,113948.0.html) was invented for, no?

Isn't that called the BYOAC High Game Scoreboard (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,113948.0.html) thread?

Yes, except that it would be a heck of a lot more active.

Yup. ;)

Nothing is stopping you guys (paige) from having your own in home competitions. I'll have a Game Of The Month for the family to compete in, most of the time it's a classic game that has already been a BYOAC comp game.

Sorry for the delay.. I'll get a tally and a new game started up very soon... #100, apparently.  I'll try to come up with something fun.

Final Score Tally:

Tafoid       - 212990
kixfan       - 159160
Gray_Area    - 85210
danny_galaga - 43780

Regarding length of competition - about 2 weeks just feels right.  It gives most people a chance to at least try it and feel how they want to proceed with the competition.  I would add that there should be a rule in which a competition can be aborted after 1 week, although I am not sure how many "new game" posts will be needed and if the posts should include only score posters or not...  something to think about.

New game coming up in a bit.

This is probably the most bizzare ending to any of the competitions. First no one reacts to the proposed by OP end date, and then against his wishes and without any consideration his date is overriden with disregard whether anyone else might be assuming they still have a chance to compete, because of the original end date... Whatever.

I'd agree.  It was an odd ending.

I did what I did based on the following factors:
A) Active participants verbally decided to stop the longer timeframe and were agreeing to pick a new game, along with congratulations to me for winning.
B) Like you said in your post right from the start, 3 weeks was abnormally long which supported my observation in my short time here that have all been 2 weeks in length (give or take a day).
C) Revenger himself mentioned he should probably adjust the length, but did not.
D) Presumably, the winner usually chooses the next game, which I did.

That all said, people can still submit scores if they want to the BYOAC High Game Scoreboard (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,113948.0.html) and dethrone not even the high score here, but for any previously run competition.

Hopefully, Revenger, you aren't too put off with how things went down here.  If so, I truly apologize and was just keeping the games flowing.
