Title: Admin Buttons
Post by: stalemate on July 14, 2011, 10:43:36 pm
I am looking for some advice on what buttons I might need for my cabinet. I am keeping the cp very simple. It will have:

I am planning on putting a couple of buttons on top of the cabinet where people won't stumble onto them. Specifically 1 button to power off the whole cabinet (wired to my computer power switch and everything plugged in to a smart strip) and another button to enter the MAME configuration menu (tab).

Will this pretty much cover it all? What else should I be considering?

Please just do a search. This question has been asked and answered plenty of times. Almost word for word. Promise.

In the last couple of days we've had control panel tilt, why 7 buttons and now how many admin buttons threads. If we get an 'is this pc good enough' thread we'll have the set.

There is also an FAQ forum..

Ur setup is among the most common, followed by none with shifted keys and some who add volume controls or tab for setup.

I'd leave it at pause and exit, then people can't mess it up. Having a keyboard in the coin door is the way to go.

Hmmm.. I didn't think about a keyboard in the coin door. I thought about having one but I didn't know where I would put it that wouldn't require me to build some kind of tray and wouldn't be way inconvenient. I also have VNC access into the computer. I'll have to ponder on that.

My cab is a cocktail, each side has a Neo geo 4 button config. Each side also has a start and a pause.... On side back side above the key locked access door is another keylocked door. Behind that door is a red hepp button , I use this the mame menu button, With my shift key (player1 start) it is also "player1 coin or 5" beside that is 2 yellow happ button for system volume. Shifted Save/Load state. Next to them is a black Rod Switch for F2 service button. And finally beside that is a red micro switch for PC power and a Black Micro for PC reset.... To exit I set it be Shift Player 1 pause.......   Hope that helps , by doing it that way I have a very clean look.......   ML

I have an old 1ghz 512mb RAM pc, if I add a video card with the correct output would this be good enough?   >:D

Don't do the keyboard behind the coin door, instead do a wireless keyboard/mouse you can find them dirt cheap and put them away when you don't need them

Pause and exit are all you need (although on my setup I use tab instead of exit so I can configure games on the fly) I added a trackball to my cab and the pause/tab also work as left/right mouse buttons. For exit, I have P1+pause or P2+pause, that way there are no accidental exits.

You need a button for "O" and "K" unless you custom compile to avoid that nag screen.

Wireless kb/mouse is a good idea, also don't forget about those floppy usb keyboards that you can roll up and stuff anywhere, like they use at your dentist's office.  They suck to type on but get the job done in a compact way.  Could fit inside your cp if it's hinged.

No.

If you move the joystick left then right it also gets you past the nag screen. (I believe it even SAYS this on the nag screen.)

I think I'll just wire one button to be every letter and have a left arrow and a delete. I should be able to type whatever I want with those.

or just set a parameter in mame to skip intro.............. or even better MKchamp has a pre compiled mame that automaticly skips game intros AND even skip errors like yellow "this game has problems screen"  I use it , LOVE it, it has a few bugs that need to be worked out, I will hopefully get some help on it soon... But still a nice touch:)....ML

I didn't see you specifically call out 'coin' buttons...
