Title: (SOLVED) Need AC Adapter To Connect WG K7400 To MK1 Cabinet
Post by: MKFan4Life on October 04, 2010, 02:36:33 am
I have just installed a Wells Gardner K7400 into my Mortal Kombat 1 cabinet and noticed the chassis has a different AC power connection than my old WG K7197.  The old connector is a female 3-conductor connection (coming from a source with an isolation transformer).  I know the K7400 doesn't require the isolation transformer but will run fine with it, so I'm leaving it in there.  Can someone point me to a listing with the exact adapter I can order to make this connection?  I don't want to hack it, though I know it would be easy to do so.  Here are pics of the two connectors I need to mate:

From MK1 Cabinet (circled connector):

On The K7400 Chassis:

Thanks for any help!

I beleive that this is the animal you are looking for.  AMP part number  1-480700-00
Of course you will need the correct crimping tool for the pins.

 http://www.newark.com/tyco-electronics-amp/1-480700-0/pin-socket-connector/dp/46F206 (http://www.newark.com/tyco-electronics-amp/1-480700-0/pin-socket-connector/dp/46F206)

It is also available from Happ Controls.   Happ part numbers:  43-0779-00 for the connector,  43-0778-00 for the male pins.

 Enjoy.

I can't find it in the first link (first product looks almost same, but has perfectly round connections, & second one has the "D" shaped connections but has 4 conductors instead of 3).  I think you have the right one with the HAPP part #, but that looks like still just one of the ends I am looking for.  Does someone make a pre-made cable a few inches long just to interface between these 2 connections?  That is what I'd like to find.  (Though I know it's going to cost more than making one.)
Thanks for your help just the same!

Yes, Happ sells a pre-made adapter to do this.  Wells-Gardner actually has a part number for it.  I can't seem to find it right now (grr).  Ask DiveMaster127 on here.  He's a Happ distributor, and he can get that stuff for you cheaper than ordering off the website (especially w/ shipping!).

why not chop the old connector off the monitor and remove the socket off the new one and solder the wire onto the board?!

the wiring scheme is the same as the plug (ac) (gnd) (ac)

So ya mean chop the pigtail in my first pic from my old K7197 and solder it onto my K7400 chassis in place of the connector in the second pic?  Yeah that would work, but the K7197 chassis is still in great shape, and I didn't really want to butcher it.  But that is something to think about.  I could at least temporarily do that.  I could just desolder the pigtail from the K7197 and the connector from the K7400 and resolder them later if I finally get the adapter I need.  Thanks for the idea.  I would have to remove the chassis from each mounting plate to desolder/solder those points properly though.

Don't guess anyone ever found an EXACT adpater to do this did they?  I found a part number on the HAPP site and sent it to DiveMaster127 (haven't heard back from him yet), but wasn't positive it's what I need 'cause they have NO PICS of the parts, lol!  Said "3-pin power connector for Wells Gardner monitors".  Not sure what the other end looks like, so would hate to order one from there (about $14).  Any help still greatly appreciated.

BTW, I did go ahead and simply strip a standard pc/monitor power cord end and make a temporary connection to test the monitor with, but I still want to get a permanent connector.

Yep, that's unfortunately true.  I figured this was something used enough that a lot of people would tell me right off hand what I needed.  At least since MK1 and Wells Gardner are both so popular.  Keep coming across the correct end for the monitor side, but can't find the right end for the cab's connector.

Thanks just the same.

The more I look at this the more I think this could be a MIDWAY/ATARI cabinet part.

I have one of these adaptors in my adaptor cord collection on my bench that I gaffled from a converted MIDWAY cabinet, K2 I think, that had a different monitor in it than the original.

I wish I had a part number for you, sorry.

Well, the cabinet is definitely a Midway cabinet, being MK1.  The original monitor was a WG K7197.  It appeared to be the real original monitor, because the serial numbers on the frame matched the others on stickers in the cabinet and on the circuit boards, but I guess someone could have swapped in a different chassis and kept same tube and frame or etc.  This same type of connection (like in the first pic in my original post) is used right before the marquee light AND right before AC power goes into the power supply.  These are all in a bundle for the AC power in the cabinet coming from the isolation transformer.  If these pics are not good enough, I can take a few more.  These were just on hand from some pics I took while installing the monitor.

That two pin end is what is "normally" on a K7000. (i.e a K7197)
The three pin setup like he has is a Midway thing. (two purple wires, one green, etc)

I have been checking this thing out and I think that there is some kind of part number/picture ID error here. If you look at this MOUSER catalog page you can see that connector configuration 'B' shows flat polarizing sides on a TWO PIN connector. Surely there has to be polarizing flats on a THREE PIN connector.

I am going to place an order from MOUSER on Monday or Tuesday anyway.  I will order some of these AMP connectors and pins and I will make one of these adaptors for you FREE OF CHARGE if these parts are correct.

Just sit back and watch this thread for further updates.

I am not completely sure what you mean.  Are you talking about on my monitor chassis AC connector, or a part someone else in these replies spoke of?  On my chassis, it has the flat areas on the AC lines (neutral and hot) with the center (ground) round.  My pic is not as detailed as it could be.  Basically, the chassis connector looks exactly like "E" in that PDF file if it were the pcb-mount type connector.  And thanks for the offer to do one for free.

We are buying a MALE connector for the cabinet wire harness end which connects to the FEMALE end on the monitor board.  The three pin MOLEX connector is pretty much irrelevent beacause it is so common.  I am swimming in them.

The FLAT POLARIZING aspect is in the AMP MATE-N-LOK connector and is part of the design but it is not accurately shown in the pictures.

Ok.  I understand you completely now.  Sorry for the confusion.  I have never ordered these individual connectors to build an adapter from Mouser.  Sounds like the way to go since they look pretty cheap to buy.  Thanks again for the help!

Adaptor is done. Kid tested and mother approved.  I tried to get a picture for you but I can't seem to get a clear one. Anyway, I am sure it is what you need.

Send me an address where you want it to go in a personal message through the forum and I'll ship it out USPS on Monday.

Just in case the lawyers are watching... Please use at your own risk.

The check, I mean the adapter, is in the mail.

The above part numbers are correct in spite of what the drawings show.

They are:

1-480700-0     AMP Universal MATE-N-LOK plug housing  (1 required)

350547-1        AMP Universal MATE-N-LOK male pin   (3 required)

03-09-2032     MOLEX .093 Free Hanging Plug   (1 required)

02-09-2103     MOLEX .093  male pin  (3 required)

63811-1000     MOLEX Universal Hand Crimper   Note: This MOLEX crimper was also used on the AMP pins even
though it is not the crimper designed for them. The correct
                                                                         AMP crimper costs $127.34!!!

These are all manufacturer part numbers.

When you get the adapter please post a picture of it as all my attempts to do so have failed miserably.

Thanks and enjoy

Uh... you didn't buy the $49 crimper especially to make this did you?  Lol!

Well, although the individual parts only cost about $1.27, you've saved me the hassle of finding them myself, and likely screwing up 2-3 attempts of making a good one, plus, you paid to ship it to me.  I can drop a few bucks in your PayPal account if you'll send me a PM with your addy in it.

Can't wait to get it.  Have some friends coming over for a LAN party Saturday, and we always play the arcade games, too.  Thanks!!!  ;D

Well, it WAS... but what you can't see in the pic is the cable going up another inch or so to a stress relief wire-tie attached to the chassis frame.  I would have had to pretty much grab it and pull upwards to dislodge it the way it was, but again, this was temporary and the game wasn't turned on many times with this connection plugged into the wall, lol!
