What's your favourite? My vote has got to be for MK 1 & 2. Besides the nostalgia/good memories, top notch ports to home consoles, and intense media coverage [good coverage in all the video game magazines, bad coverage in the news and such - which made it cooler because it was "bad"] I think it has got to be one of the evenest playing fields, player for player. The "special moves" were in there to spice it up, and you can fight the same way with each character [more or less]. The specials are different for each character and gives each one a unique feel, as opposed to some characters that were so useless they are near-unplayable [zangief comes to mind - has anyone actually ever done one of his moves??? lol] I also think that the block button was a cool idea. Having a button instead of holding away isn't common in games and it adds to it. And all in all I think the characters had deeper back stories than in many other games, and that made you want to play through with each one.
I'd love to hear which are your favourites and why. Unless it's because you can hadoken faster than anyone and it makes you win every time.

I never liked the mortal kombat series.. I'm not sure why. I tried giving it a chance, but I remember everyone talking about it because of the blood more than the fun. I have many more fond memories around street fighter and the crazy rainbow hacked ones. I never liked Zangied, but I have met people since that can kick ass with that character. I think my favorite fighting games (and i'm going to include console) were
Soul Calibur II for Gamecube - I loved playing with Link
Soul Calibur I for Dreamcast - The first 3d fighter I really liked
Street Fighter Alpha 3 - So many characters so much fun
Snk vs Capcom 2 - I loved having my Kim, Vega, Ken team
King of the Fighter 2004 - First kof I played, tons of fun at the time
X-Men vs Street Fighter - What can I say? I loved comics..
Guilty Gear (the ones that came out on the Naomi Board)
Tobal No. 1 (I haven't had time to appreciate No. 2)

MK1 was cool for its looks, and fun... but, it was way too limited.
MK2 was too cartoony for my taste, but it did have some nice new characters.
SF IIce was cool for its time, but eventually, the game wore thin over time.
MK3 was more fun than above, because of the combo system, speed of the game,
and humorous violence. SFII was like a Disney childs game comparatively.
Killer Instinct 1 - Probably my alltime Favorite. The depth is greater than
most all other fighters combined. The combo system is nearly limitless to your
imagination. You can probably make 100 possible combos per character.
Combine 3 types of specials, with several linkers, and 3 or so enders.
Does not stop there... Each ender can be pre-held, and then released...
which creates a faster more damaging. More? You can make "Broken-Combos",
by stringing specials and regular attacks together. These are unbreakable, but
very difficult to string together well.
Combo Breaker system! Unlike most fighters, you Can break out of a combo,
but it takes a lot of skill. You have to preform the correct special move, with
the correct button. One in Three chance, but, if you are aware of the moves
being done to you, you will know which button to use.
Breaker Rewards: If you break a combo, you get special powers. One, is
a Shadow power attack. Many of your special moves will go further, are twice as
fast, have a cool shadow trail effect behind you, do more damages. Also,
when you do hold and release moves, you make a high damage shadow combo.
Some characters who shoot projectiles, may get 3x the projectiles instead
of a single.
Stun / Dizzy: Certain levels of damage will cause the Opp to be stunned. Yet,
they can snap out of it if they wiggle the stick fast enough.
Ultra Combo: If the Opps is almost dead, you can add a move to your combo
to preform a very long unbreakable ultra combo.
Last Chance: If you run out of life, yet snap out of it due to the opp waiting too
long, ...you are more dangerous, as all your moves do more damages.
The next Fav in line would be Tekken III. However, Tekken 3 is a tad clunky
in its execution.
-
For me its got to be Marvel vs Capcom 2, with street fighter alpha 3 and rival schools somewere behind that.
But im loving the newer ones, like Tatsunoko Vs Capcom, MK vs DC universe and DBZ Burst limit. Not to big on tekken 6 but ive never been to much of a tekken man, i loved number 2 tho.
There were some awesome ones on the PS1 aswell, like X-men mutant academy, soul blade and scarred fist, there was another game aswell which had a massive 3d playfield and you like did kind of DBZ style fireballs and stuff but for the life of me i cant remember what its called, i only ever played a demo
-
Real easy.... ULTIMATE MORTAL KOMBAT 3 for Sega Genesis. It is simply the best fighting game ever.
-
Yie-ar Kung Fu - it's the only one where I can get past the second stage...
Used to play it on my old 8-bit - what a joystick wrecker that was. My old Quickshot 1 didn't stand a chance.
-
For in depth play? SSF2T
For fun with friends? Tie for "Time Killers" and "Jackie Chan in Fists of Fire"
-
Lordy am I that old? :P
The all time classic- Karate Champ. I remember going to six flags at 11am going on 2 rides and playing that (& Hat Trick) till close.
-
in addition to whats listed, does PowerStone count? its 1 on 1 on 1 on1 :)
VERY fun multiplayer, especially with my nephews.
Cant believe Samurai Shodown and Last Blade havent been mentioned.
-
Funny you mention that, I was at work today and burst out laughing n the middle of a meeting because I remembered VICTOLY!
-
MK1 followed by MK2 and Street Fighter 2.
-
Killer Instinct
Without a damn doubt
MK, SF & MVC are great too.
-
I would have to say the Killer Instinct series is my favorite followed by Mortal Kombat followed by Street Fighter and all the Vs. Variations we have had. Pics are attached since I am bored at work
-
Mortal Kombat 2 by FAR.
In second place is Super Street fighter 2 X The grand master Challenge.
In Third, Killer Instinct, Even though i suck at it.
-
Really kind of suprised there are not more responses here, there are alot of great fighters out there and its just personal preference so I am suprised by the lack of responses.
-
The kids like Marvel vs Capcom (http://www.arcade-museum.com/game_detail.php?game_id=8636Marvel Vs Capcom)
It's a little easier on Turbo. They love something about little Megaman kicking the Hulks tail.
-
I like te Virtual Fighter series.
-
I like te Virtual Fighter series.
Virtua Fighter 2 was one of my favorites when it came out. Shortly after though it was hard to find in an arcade! I forgot to mention Tekken 3. I have logged a lot of time on that, too!
-
KI 1 and 2
MK 2
Marvel vs Capcom 2
and a distant 5th would be Street Fighter

Retro: Karate champ. Only bummer is I can only play it single player on my cab.
Most used: Marvel vs Capcom, because it has the WOW factor for guests.
Off the cab, IK+. Blinding game on the ST and Amiga. Many hours wasted on it as a kid.
A Special mention for the tekkens. The first proper arcade quality fighter I could play at home. Practically wore out my import playstation with it.
Most impressed with: Soul calibur series. Played these to death. I hung onto my dreamcast as a mark of respect just for that.
Favourite overall? Tekken 3 I guess, probably because it was the one I got to spend the most time playing and opening up extras.
-
I love most of the fighters... however, X-men vs. Street Fighter is one of my favorites. Akuma's Raging Demon only costs 1 bar, and you can combo after it. >:D
-
I suck at fighters but I really like them. I think Street Fighter 4 is awesome.

Agreed, SF4 is really really good, I got it for the PC and wasnt sure what to expect, I was thinking it was 3d like Tekken 3 or something, but they really kept true to the SF2 Theme and I really enjoy it.
-
tekken for then win
-
Super Street Fighter II X

Interesting little tid bit about MvC3:
Confirming the rumors posted the other day, Planetxbox360 reported that Marvel vs. Capcom 3 was shown at Capcom's Captivate event in Hawaii.
There's an embargo on the details, so you won't be seeing screen shots, movies and other things until early next week, but here's the notes they were able to get together.
• Confirmed characters so far are Wolverine, Spider-Man, The Hulk, Magneto, Storm and a few others will return.
• The Marvel vs. Capcom 3 development team said they will be blowing fans out of the water with the sheer number of characters this game includes on the disc.
• This will be another 2D fighter — gameplay-wise — but will be something of a cross between the original Marvel vs. Capcom 2 and Street Fighter 4.
• The rumored release date is late 2010 or early 2011 on the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, no plans right now for other systems.
• The game will run in 1080p resolution.
• It will be a disc-based release.
• Apparently the game will have unlockables again.
• The game will be playable at this year's E3 which is held on June 15 - 17th.
This should be a fun addition to the fighting game scene not to mention its got to give Rare and MS a bit more of an itch to put KI and KI2 out on XBL.
-
MvC3???
*drool*
-
Off the cab, IK+. Blinding game on the ST and Amiga. Many hours wasted on it as a kid.
Now you're talking - I had this on my Sinclair Spectrum (it was surprisingly good) and on the Amiga - I've got the theme music going through my head as I type... :D
-
Man, MvC3 and SF4 on a cab are going to be sweeeeeeeet....
-
Sameri Showdown kicks ass :hissy:
-
Since it can be played 1v1, Smash Bros Melee (which is the only way to play in tourneys)
High speed, combos galore, incredible meta-game.
-
At home: The Way of the Exploding Fist
Arcade: Dumped the most quarters into Tekken
-

Yea I forgot all about Super Smash Bros. That would have to be in my top 5 definitely.
-
RayB! What do you play Exploding fist on? c64? I love the loading screen audio from Enter the Dragon. Not bad for c64 sound. Also, punching out a bull is always satisfying.
-
I would have to say Virtua Fighter, because it's was the first 3d game I'd seen at an arcade and I nearly crapped myself. And the fact that I made it to like round 3 on my first coin using Wolf made me feel like a badass at the time.
Don't get me started on the fact that I don't consider the Smash Bros. games to be fighters. They're more like beat-em ups- and Brawl with its campaign mode cinches that fact. :soapbox:
-
Yeah I agree.. smash bros isn't in the same category.
Also, I'm going to add dead or alive and bloody roar to my list. On the ps1 me and my friends had way more fun with those two games than Tekken. And yes, I initially bought dead or alive for the you know whats. I was a kid back then.
-
Bloody roar! What a game, the wolf guy (think its alex) is a really unbalanced character tho.
-
I always wanted to finish Karateka, Yosagi Yogimbo and Bruce Lee (C=64).
Arcade: Kung-Fu Master, MK, SF.
-

I liked the tiger guy.. I think his name was Lee. He had this one combo that was crazy impressive and really easy to pull off.
-
MVC2 was great, I played Bloody Roar but never got into it, Tekken 3 would have to be my favorite Tekken closely followed by Tekken Tag, Virtua Fighter was fun but wasnt able to get into it until the later console releases. I loved Samurai Showdown III although I never got into like I did my favorites listed above. It also looks like were going to see if the MvC3 rumors are true tomorrow since I am reading that information will be released.
-
Samurai Shodown II was the best, much like Mortal Kombat II was the best MK
-
not huge on fighting games but i always liked Time Killers. I know it was a ---steaming pile of meadow muffin---, but cutting someones head off with a chainsaw was a guilty pleasure.... :lol
-
Samurai Shodown II was the best, much like Mortal Kombat II was the best MK
Ill have to check out Samurai II, what about it appeals to you as your favorite?
and its official: Marvel vs Capcom 3 Teaser (Proper Sound) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j6vR-d2LZi4#ws)
Looks like from the teaser atleast it could be in the same visual style as TvC but thats just my thoughts based off what I see from this.
-
I always wanted to finish Karateka, Yosagi Yogimbo and Bruce Lee (C=64).
Ah, Bruce Lee. Had it on my Atari 800xl. Brilliant game, used to play it with my dad.
What was the green lads name again? Was it Yamo or something??
-

Best balanced character line up. It really built up off of the previous Samurai Shodown without changing too much. SS3 started to get hokey and 4 and up just full on weird, SS1 and SS2 stayed kinda grounded in reality.
-
Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 is the greatest game of all time.

Eternal Champions: Challenge from the Dark Side - Endings (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=erKpPsJR7iQ#)
Some of those fatalities and stage fatalities are pretty good (considering its age). The game looks familiar but I cant remember playing it.
-

Campaign mode is just that. A different mode, so that argument cinches nothing. It doesn't disqualify the game from consideration when discussing 1v1 fighters. And I don't believe I'm biased, either. I love mvsc/mvsc2, as well as the SF Alphas, and numerous others. High level play in Smash involves just as much speed, skill, technique, and mind games as any other fighting game. I dare say the Melee installment was one of the most frenetically paced fighters made.

You're awesome. :)

Smash Bros doesn't feel like a 1 on 1 fighter, I can't articulate why exactly.. maybe because you could roam around the world. Fighters don't usually do this or because the moves usually only involved pushing a button in combination with a direction. Is powerstone and ps2 a fighting game? a 1 on 1 fighter ?
Smash Bros is a Beat 'em up fighter in my eyes. Not the same thing. If that's a 1 on 1 fighter, then so is Bushido Blade.

Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 is the greatest game of all time.
Agreed - well, best fighting game anyway ;)
Everyone seems to prefer MK2 (once had a friend jokingly tell me we probably shouldn't be friends anymore if I don't think MK2 is the best Mortal Kombat!), but I've always prefered the speed and game play mechanics of MK3/UMK3. Miss Johnny Cage, Baraka, and Raiden though.
Other than that, I love KI 1 and 2, SFII series, SFIII, and to lesser extents SFA, SFEX, Tekken, and Virtua Fighter series. Never really got into any others - most of the others I've played are just laughably bad or cheap clones of one of the aforementioned games - but my interest in seriously tackling new games really dropped off from the late '90s onward, so I may have missed out on some stuff I would've liked, I dunno.
-
Killer Instinct and King of Fighters 98
-
All 2d SF games
Garou
KOF 98

Super Mario War is more fun anyhow :)
