Title: Odd angled molding or corner guard... Where can I get it?
Post by: phildo77 on April 13, 2010, 05:50:56 pm
Since I've got a rotating panel, I've got some strange angles I need to cover to look nice and to protect.  See following image which shows a side view profile of my panel:

I need something that goes on the corners where the plexi meets.  Adhesive would be best since I'd rather not have screws or nails showing.  I've looked around and haven't found anything really that nails it yet.  I did find some wall corner guard that was too wide and didn't have the right angle.  Some sort of angled T-molding would be ideal but I have no idea where to look or what that would be called if it exists...

Anyone have any experience that might be able to steer me in the right direction?

I would make your CP out of wood with the proper angle.  Then I'd clamp one end of the plexi to the top.  Then I'd take a heat gun or hair dryer and heat the plexi and bend it over the angle.  Problem solved!

I'd rather NOT do that... The panel is 31" wide.  Admittedly I have no experience bending plexi, but I'm guessing 31" would be difficult to bend w/ a heat gun?

Besides, I have six sides to the panel total.  I'll have an exposed edge somewhere either way.  I think I'd rather have a nice looking black guard bordering each panel/face.  It would be even better if it were some sort of T-molding so that I could anchor the guard down and the guard will have the additional function of helping to hold down the plexi!

What you are after is 'flexible corner PVC'. It's just PVC edging strip used in construction and decorating for finishing the corners of plasterboard walls, exterior walls and guttering. It can be had in fixed right-angle or with a flexible corner, which would suit your project perfectly with the odd corners as it can just be screwed or glued over the joins.

Ok I'm in!  That's exactly what I'm looking for but I just spent an hour looking online for something generic that would work and I'm having trouble finding anyone that sells what I'm looking for in "small" orders.  Anyone have some experience with the stuff that could point me to a vendor?  I'll keep looking but help would be greatly appreciated.

I found this (http://www.plasticomponents.com/products.asp?CatId=3&SubCatId=25).  It is a little wider than I'd like and the minimum is a box of fifty 10' strips.  Must keep looking...  Need half that width and a lower minimum order....  Something better looking wouldn't hurt either.

Thanks for the help guys.  I just ran into one of my buddy's neighbors who does testing and marketing for Rockford Fosgate.  Apparently he makes displays and speaker cabs that use crap like this all the time.  He's going to take a look and hopefully flood me with ideas/materials.  I'll let you know how that pans out.

Haven't talked w/ the Fosgate guy yet but I had an idea:

Use aluminum sheets bend to 120 degrees and cut the strip to be 1/2" wide (with the bend in the center) then powder coat as the same color as T-molding and glue to the panel joint.

opinions?

Whatever works works. If you have access to a metal brake then go for it. And of course, post pics ;)
