Here's some of the insides. It looks like there is two boards inside of the metal Cage looking piece.

Well I'm glad you posted photos, because now we can tell you that that is not even the right cabinet shape for Donkey Kong!
Open the board cage and try to read what it says on the boards. You might have 2 games in there. I remember a 2-board cage set up like that being in Punch Out, but that was because it had two screens. I find it odd they'd keep a 2 board format in a 1 screen cabinet and game...

Almost all of Nintendo's games of that era are two board design. DK (also in a four board), DKjr, DK3, Popeye, and Mario Brothers were two board.
Unless of course you're referring to the two edge connectors then, yeah, that is strange...
