Updated: Pac-Mini - Monitor installed today
« on: July 20, 2003, 12:02:47 am »
2003-07-26: installed the monitor today. took longer than I thought!  Tricky getting it to be lined up perfectly with the CP.  I removed the back of the monitor and cut a frame for it to be mounted into.  Installed mounting brackets into the cab and dropped it in.

The artwork was just a laser printed test for size so I could figure out the coin mech size I will need.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

I started construction on a new 70% exact scale Pac-Man cabinet.  I call it Pac-Mini.

Got the 4-way Happ Ms. PacMan joystick from Bob Roberts.  I highly recommend him!

More pics later.

You should have said it's full scale and your 9ft tall! hehe

Looks great, I look forward to seeing it with full artwork. It'll look fantastic!

Since you've already built two you might as well keep going. Why not just build yourself a full mini arcade? ;)

Then you can just leave a few rolling chairs in their to wheel around and play different games.

Haha!  The thought crossed my mind.  The next one I'd like to build is a mini-Tempest actually.

BTW - if anyone needs PacMan artwork in vector form... I've put a lot of hours into drawing all of it in Illustrator.  I've got everything. I can send them to you.

Why not upload it to the vector library?

Question - what are those corner braces in your pictures?  I'm talking about the ones on the bottom of the cab.  BTW - the whole thing looks great and I can't wait to see it finished!

The corner braces are actually corner protectors that came protecting a Kohler sink I just bought.

I was getting ready to take my cab off the saw horses and I saw that the contractor had left them on the floor.

They are really great protection for the corners whenever I need to slide the thing around.  They are a cellular cardboard (about 3/8" thick) around the sides with heavy cardboard on the bottom.

They screw right onto the bottom of the cab and come right off and are reusable.  Wish I could buy more.

You know, these mini projects could really catch on.. they look like a *great* idea for someone with space constraints!

Now.. how to fit rotating CPs in there ???

I think someone actually needs to build classic "Mega" cabs. Pac Man was great when we were all 4ft tall but when I came across one after 20 years I was surprised at how small they are. Heh

Very cute cabs though. Nothing looks as good as classic cabinets in my eyes.

How about building a mini Showcase cabinet? I wouldn't recommend any mini sit-downs. A mini Midway might be cool.

Yeah, Pacman on a huge 42" screen... wait... nevermind  :-X

Mini showcase without the monitor sounds good. Just plop it down infront of the computer desk or family room television and keep the kids busy when they are visiting.

Sure, I'll upload the artwork.  BTW - some of the art is based on yours but tweaked where it needed it to match the original!  So it might look familiar.

ya I was thinking of making more minis for a little mini arcade in my office.  People can roll around in the office chairs from game to game.  We'll see...gotta dream I guess.  If I made more, realistically, I would make a Tempest as I said.  Love the shape.

BTW, I'm making the mini for my kids plus it sure gets a lot of attention from the guys at work.  They are all making full size and I've converted a couple over!

I thought the challenge of making a replica would be really fun.  The biggest challenge is getting the artwork!  :P  I had to draw most of it out in Illustrator but I've got almost all of it now so hopefully others won't have to go through all the hassle.  All thats left is the marquee but it will be easy compared to the other stuff.

Luckily, I have a friend with an original PacMan that I could take good snapshot for any of the missing artwork to go off of and the overall shape of the cab.

Ya, I did think about it.  One problem is that it would be too small to play seated but too big to play sitting on the floor.  At 2:1 it would be too large to keep on a bar or your desk too.

Other problems are that the controls will appear very large compared to the cab and you would have trouble getting them to fit in the correct spots.

70% turns out to be a perfect scale that solves all these problem yet makes the unit small enough to be noticably smaller.

I thought he meant have yours be twice as BIG as the original arcades.  That would sort of humourous  :P (you'd need like a ladder to play it)

Looking good. Only comment is that the cabinet isn't really exactly 70 percent size, since it still looks like you have a 19" monitor in there.

Oh well, my mini has a 21" monitor in it. (Although my mini is big, the Artic ATW minis were just about the largest mini cabinet ever made).

Ha! Good eye ... it's actually a 17" and it is a *little* large but the only other monitor I had was a 13" and thats too small plus I'd like to save it for another cab I'm thinking about.

Boy, this is addicting.

I haven't had a chance to do any construction lately for two reasons.  I have another major project I'm working on that I have to get finished this month: I'm doing a complete restoration of my 1920's Craftsman.  I have some deadlines for the bank that I have to complete by the end of the month.

The other is that I am still finishing up the artwork and contemplating the ideal way to do the control panel / bezel.  I also need to get the coin door ordered so I can cut for that.

I'll probably have an update after the first weekend of Sept.

You think anyone would be interested in construction plans for this baby?

Not after you've ripped off 1UP's shape exactly and are selling plans of it. Using free plans to create plans to sell is tacky.

I'm going to have to agree...you did totally gank the original design from 1UP (and if I remember correctly, you didn't even credit him initially).  Nothing personal, but selling plans of a design that you took from someone else is most tacky.  At least try to sell off plans that you designed yourself.

On a lighter note though, the Pac-Mini looks pretty cool.

Hey we don't know - he could be giving royalties to 1UP or something.  I agree with Brax in that I think it is a little tacky, but if 1UP is cool with someone changing his plans and selling them then it's all good I suppose.  It's a good design at least.

It doesn't look like he is charging much for the plans and he stated he will donate a portion to BYOAC.  Sounds like he isn't in it for the money but is willing to help others wanting to build a similiar cab.  I say give this guy a break.  BTW, nice work on these little cabs.

I didn't check his site :(  I completely agree that charging for the plans is BS, especially if they are based off someone else's work. I thought this community thrived on the help/advice/experiences of others and charging for plans goes against this IMO. Changing the plans to a 70% ratio is not creating anything new.  ::)

Geezuz you guys.  The plans aren't even really the important part, its the INSTRUCTIONS that I spent many many nights writing and illustrating.  The shape is the same but construction is different.  That's not even what I was talking about in this post.

I'm also donating the dough back to this freakin forum + mame.dk.  Not like its going to make anyone rich, plus I sure as heck don't need the money.

This topic is about the mini PacMan box.  Sheesh.

Tell it to 1UP who went through many incarnations until he found just the right shape to suit his plan.

I could take your instructions add something to them and say the same thing. "The instructions were easy, it was part C where I did all this work that was hard."

Whatever. The minicabs are cute.

Looking at the plans for the mini mame which I got months ago and they were free. But looking at them there was a LOT of time spent to make building the cab almost fool proof. I have bought plans from big sites that could not hold a candle to the plans that TrickyFishy made in his spare time. As for charging money for the plans which would in turn be used to donate to mame sites where is the problem in that?  The only thing original from 1-UP'S plans is the rotating panel. The top of the cab looks a lot like a defender cab the front of the cab around the coin door looks a lot like a Space Fury cab.

I'll say it again, no one is going to get rich selling arcade cabinet plans.  There are however alot of newbies who might benefit from a nice set of instructions.  Give this guy a bread, enough already.

So why sell them then?  All the good reference stuff I've gotten around here is free anyways - the admins would probably take good submitted plans over donations anyday.

Maybe its to cover the cost of printing/paper and shipping.  I know some plans have large diagrams.  I've never used plans so I couldn't say for sure.

Yes, of course its all free. But some people don't have:

1) the time digging it all up. they want to start now.
2) the skills to put it all together without a guide
3) all the lessons *I* learned putting it together.  Probably will save them 10x more than the plans cost.

You also have a choice: the choice not to pay and go dig it up yourself. Do all the size conversions.  Make all the mistakes.  Read thousands of posts.  Maybe you'll get it right the first time.  Who knows?

And the price really not the plans, it was the instructions that have the value.  You can get cheezy plans anywhere.  I even bought some that I though were pretty crappy for twice as much.  Plus I'm wasn't keeping the $$$, it was originally a way to try to raise an insignificant amount for the site but screw it.  What a waste of time.  Ya, maybe I'll just donate them if there is someplace to send them.

Anyway, no update yet  :-\   I'm bummed but I should be back underway in a couple of weeks.  I'm currently getting my artwork all printed and some other happ stuff coming (coin door etc.)

I've had a few requests for my plans on this one too. I don't know though...I feel kinda spit on.

I don't blame you...  Some of the people around here think that since they got another set of plans free (or 3000 games free), that no one should charge money for them.

As great as this forum is, some people just don't get the idea that not everyone here is well off.  I'm glad to help out where I can, but I too am always looking for ways to make some extra money.  If you don't like my ideas or the "product" I offer, then look else where instead of bashing a person for trying to fund his hobby.

Oh well... I'm really not trying to stir the flames back up.

And I wouldn't blame you one bit if you didn't want to give/sell your plans.
Just keep us updated on how the project is going. Please!

TrickyFishy, you have been spit on.  I think you have been treated unfairly.  There is an environment here that doesn't accept all comers or their ideas.  You are perfectly within your right to charge for well thought out plans.  I think it could save a newbie lots of time and effort.  I built my first cabinet and had never seen or heard of this website.  It took forever to figure out how to connect the control panel and how to program the encoder.  Now I can laugh at how easy it seems in retrospect.  Tricky, you do top quality work and I for one appreciate your efforts.  Coming up with easy to read plans is a good idea.  Hang in there.
Please continue to update us on your project.  I can't wait to see your completed cab.

My only concern is that you used someone else's free plans as a base for your commercial plans.

It's not a matter of being easy to read, or saving 'newbies' time, those are commendable - it's a matter of fairness to the original authors.  That's it.

But hey, I like the cab ;)

EDIT: OK my bad - I didn't check the reply dates close enough and thought that this series was fairly new.  Guess I missed it last month...  anyway that doesn't change my opinion, but puts it in context.

yikes...

On another note, I too have started a mini PacMan project.

This weekend, I configured the system for the cabinet. I am using Dos 6.22, & Game Launcher. (will have Pacman, Ms Pacman, Super Pacman and Centipede) I just received the controller and buttons today from Happs. The monitor is mounted to an MDF frame and ready to drop  in (BTW, I used the power drill method of degaussing a monitor....very cool)

I have vectorized and uploaded all of the artwork (available for DL at the Vector Library).

I am going to prime and paint this week.

Awesome!  Do you have pics?  I can't get to the site for degaussing with a drill.  How do you do it?

Care to exchange artwork?  Maybe yours is better than mine :)

I've vectorized the complete set.  I haven't uploaded to the Vector Library yet cause I haven't had time to make small jpegs of it.
--------------------------
Just checked it out.  I also have the coin door art, monitor bezel and CPO vectorized.

Bummer about the degauss link... I am sure its in my cache at home.

The instructions were to take the corded drill (sans bit) and start about 6 inches from the monitor. Strart the drillmotor very slowly and watch the monitor degauss. I was skeptical at first, but, it worked like a champ!

To be honest, the project was supposed to be a Ms. Pacman Mini. After I had made the cuts, my son wanted "Yellow Pac Man". So, now its a hybrid Mini Ms. Pacman cab with Pacman Art! I will shoot some images tonight and get a web site going. (on my ever growing list of things to do)

I would love to see your Pac Man files. Have you posted them anywhere?

Best Regards,
Tom

Is it me or has he removed the whole website that used to have the plans on them? Both http://pacmini.com/ and http://minimame.com/ go to the same website now.

I liked his site before he took it down. However like many others though feel he should share the plans for free since they are based on 1Up's plans and also its the sharing of information that makes this hobby so easy to get started on.

Zorg you are just rude.  Give this guy a break.  No one is forcing you are anyone else to buy his plans.  The sarcasm here is way out of control.  If you were a total newbie you might think $20 was money well spent for carefully laid out instructions and plans that could prevent lots of mistakes.  The disrespect I see here is a total bummer.  If you don't like this guys projects then don't bother posting on this thread.  Oh, BTW, lets see some of your work.  What have you contributed to this hobby?

Check out the downloads in www.mametrixreloaded.com - Zorg has contributed plenty to this hobby.

The great thing about this hobby is the amount of time and effort people are willing to spend on creating things that anybody can use free of charge. How much work do think think goes into this site? We don't get charged a cent to use it. Same with all the free cab plans out there. Not to mention MAME and how much work goes into that unrewarded.

No one is forcing you are anyone else to buy his plans.

This is the other side of the coin. However my problem with this is that people are going to be discouraged from posting their plans/instructions if they think someone else is going to take them, make a few changes/additions and resell them.

You guys are incredible.  I give it all away for free now so can we just stop talking about it?  Freaking frustrating.  1UP said he didn't care as long as I gave him credit.  Christ.

I've had a lot of people interested in building one so I posted all my PacMan artwork on my site.  I spent A LOT of hours hand-drawing / tracing / scaling bla bla.  It's currently scaled for my cab and in Illustrator format.

I'll post to the vector library when I get a chance unless the webadmin wants to do it on my behalf.

Bomber you points are well taken and I'm glad to see Zorg is a pretty nice guy and has tried to help others by contributing images and art.  Sounds like he's done alot more than me.  Secondly, I had not considered that charging for plans derived from anothers work may stop some folks from posting their work/plans.  I have to be honest, that never occurred to me.  Very legitimate points.  I stand corrected.  Okay Tricky, stop charging and lets get past this.  Tricky has a very cool little project here and I really want to see the completed project.

I also think its a neat little project. My comments weren't direct at TrickyFishy directly. One guy selling plans for $20 isn't going to send the sky falling down. I just think sharing info is what makes this hobby so great and would hate to see it change. Its also a shame that we might not see the completed project because of all the flaming thats gone on here.

Please keep the project updates coming. ;D

Wow... You did an impressive job documenting your work.

I'm sorry you got bullied into sharing those plans for free...
It's obvious that you spent a lot of time & energy to document
the process & put together some outstanding plans.

The rest of you should be ashamed!
$20 is nothing for the amount of work that this man put into these documents.

OK... Now that I'm done ranting...
Great Job TrickyFishy!

not to stir the pot but those instructions are sweet--I wouldn't begrudge anyone for charging for them.  basing a cabinet on dimensions you found on the net is alot different than BUILDING a cabinet and creating detailed instructions.  I wouldn't blame trickyfish one bit for taking the instructions off of here and selling them on ebay (and giving them for free to fellow byoac'ers wink, wink, nudge, nudge-j/k)

Nice work!
its better to not post and be thought a fool, then to whip out your keyboard and remove all doubt...

Wow you must be some real nice person in real life to put up with all the mud that has been slung at you and still give the plans for free.

They are some of the best plans I've seen. The level of detail is amazing.

The laminate also looks great. 50 bucks well spent.

Thanks for sharing them man.

TrickyFishy I have a question why do you use drywall mud in your cab plans? Also does it stick well, I would be worried about knocking my cab one day and it cracking or worse falling off.

Nice job on the plans by the way they are really detailed and well written.

want smaller? try this one.  Was built as proof of concept. uses a laptop for the screen and guts (modified playstation controls) using the printer port to connect to the pc.

Now the concept is complete, I am going to start producing a similar thing but as an exact replica (shape, etc)of the pacman/mspacman/galaga etc. all in correct colours and decals.  they will be about 24" tall.

TrickyFishy I have a question why do you use drywall mud in your cab plans?

The original yellow minicab was made from particle board which is very porous and rough.  I did it to smooth out the finish.  It worked really well.  It is only intended to fill the pores of the wood and not imperfections.  For that purpose, it works fine.  Anything else, your right, it won't stick forever.

I would recommend for anyone building one to go ahead and build from MDF.  Particle board may seem cheap up front but the laminate is very expensive and it sucks up a ton of paint (even with the mud).  If your trying to be cheap, you can paint MDF for a whole lot less.

I'm currently working on a cab which will use a pda as the screen and a matchstick as the joystick  ;)

Here's some artwork on ebay that I think would look cool on a pac-mini. Of course that wouldn't make it arcade authentic but its probably cheaper and definately easier than trying to get the origanel artwork printed.

Hey TrickyFishy!!!

Where are you at with your pac mini?
I'd love to see an update...
I'm considering my next project to be a MsPac Mini... (4'-6 tall)...
(of course that's after I finish restoring my huge SFII cab, & converting the kiosk I have into a sit down cab...)

So many projects, so little time... (& garage space!!!) :P
