wiring ipac question
« on: July 17, 2003, 06:41:19 pm »
alright, im wiring my stuff to the ipac, and ive already got my 1st player buttons and stick in.  i have a 4 way between my 1st and 2nd player, and i was getting ready to wire that, but i didnt know how to wire it.  should i just stick the wires for the joystick and the 2 buttons in the same spots as my 1st player?  will that create conflict?

also, i have put in 3 maintenence buttons, where do i wire those to?  how do i make it so that one button controls the "1" button in mamewah, the "2" and the "ESC" to exit games.  i have 3 buttons, so where do i wire these so they will control options and stuff in mamewah?

That's OK.  Your 4-way will just access the same exact inputs that your player 1 joystick already is assigned to. >VR<

what about the maintenence buttons?  should i just wire those to any button slot?  and just set the slot to ESC or whatever through the IPAC gui?

1)  Your two player 1 joysticks (8 way and 4 way) should go to the player 1 joystick inputs in the IPac.  The player 2 joystick should go to the player 2 IPac.  The Player 1 buttons to the player 1 button inputs and the player 2 buttons to the player 2 button inputs.

2) for your maintenance buttons:  The IPac has Start 1 and Start 2 inputs (for the IPac 2 player board).  Just wire your player 1 start and player 2 starts buttons to those.  For your ESC key, if you have less than 8 buttons for player 1 or 2 then use one of the free IPAC inputs for that and program the IPac to see that as ESC.

I have 3 control panels wired into the IPac 2 player baord a the same time.  All the player 1 joysticks and buttons are all wired to the same set of player 1 inputs, player 2's to the player 2 inputs.  That all works like a charm.   I only have 6 buttons per player max, so I had 4 free Ipac inputs (Player 1, buttons 7 &  8 and Player 2, buttons 7 &  8 ).  I wired 4 buttons to those for ESC, TAB, ENTER and (P)ause.

I use the TAB and ENTER within the games themselves to get into the MAME menu.  Not all that necessary, some games aren't set up the "generic" way so you sometimes have to remap some of the control buttons before you can play the game right.  I normally go in there during a game I am not familiar with - just to see what controls the game uses.

I can't say enough for the Pause button.  I use that thing a lot, especially with my little kids bugging me every 4 minutes.  Of course, the IPac has the "shift" technology where you do not need seperate buttons for these purposes - but it is so nice to have one button to push for these things.
