Here's a restoration thread of one of them: http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?topic=96781.0
Gatsu: There's a black (painted) EGRET II for sale in Harbor City (somewhere near LA) over at shmups if that's interesting:

like a lot of restorations its down to money.nice to think one can get 6 candy cabs for £60,bad when you gotta spend £400 on each them getting them into a state where you could have bought a candy cab for £500 used but,in tip top condition.
so £60 = £400 restoration per cab.some of them cabs were real beat up by the looks of things,if they had spray jobs and thats after preperation if you gotta pay someone to do it your talking quite a bit of dosh.
i spent £120 on my fbot,it has cost me £5 for a extension lead and £11 for hole saw set that was no good for the steel i had to work with but, better than nothing.i aint planning on spending much more than £200 in all converting it to mame.biggest wod of money spent on controls and interface no doubt.at the end of day i got a working cab in brill condition,so i know i dont have to buy expensive monitor or even a cheapo one and no work needs doing with the cosmetics bar a good clean.
there are alternatives to the actual real mccoy candy cabs.
like its been pointed out, especialy when you live in uk its pretty costly, its pretty costly just to build an upright,a bartop can cost quite a bit so a complicated candy cab with curves an all will set you aside a large wod and you will need skill.theres candy cabs on ebay from time to time for £400ish.
:)

yeah I saw that thread....and got real depressed. lol.
I've talked to a couple of people about getting in on a bulk order...that usually saves everyone some money on shipping.
But from what I understand...you need quite a few people in on it or its not really worth it.
But back to candy rarity here in the states. On the west coast and even in the middle US, they aren't uber rare. But here on the lower east coast....even seeing a traditional cabinet is a rarity nowadays because so many arcades are closing or have closed.
I'd be willing to do some travelling to pick up a cab, but with my limited resources I'd only be able to go so far.
blackwatchplad:
from all of the forum posts i've read and from talking to different people, it seems like on the west coast they have candies just sitting around. Maybe i'm just jealous... okay i am jealous. lol i almost got in on a bulk order, a guy from virginia had came across a lot of astro cities and neo candies. at the time i was just a little bit too short on spare cash... i've been kicking myself over it ever since. anyone living in the south-east's best chance would be to watch the internet constantly for anybody willing to ship a cab if a bulk order doesn't happen. (exactly what i've been doing lol)
Ive always really been keen on acquiring a Capcom Q25 or a Egret or a Astro city... any one of those 3 i'm not to picky. ;)
But back on to subject, i defiantly think a aero city clone or a MVS-U4 (and probably quite a few others) could be easily made out of wood, or even metal if you've got the equipment. There's alot of sharp and broad angles and its not quite as "round" as a egret. I'd try to find someone nice enough to take some detailed measurements of one.
About those 6 astro cities for 60 pounds, thats one hell of a deal. Even if they all needed a bit of work.

Someone should do some creative work with body kits for cars to get some cool shaped cabinets. I'm lucky enough to own an EGRET II, and it's really awesome. The only thing that's a bit hard to do is switch the Nanao screen from 15->24kHz. But I'm working on implementing some kind of switch for that, as I plan on running emulation and consoles @ 24kHz, especially XBox 360 shmups.
