Does this gun support/work for MAME games? What does the PC detect it as? (2002-07-31)
Mame32 v.61 and later support PC light guns. To enable light gun support, go to Options -> Default Options -> Controllers -> check the "enable lightgun input" box. (2002-12-04)
...
Does this gun fuction as a mouse or a joystick? (2003-02-06)
This gun functions as a mouse. (2003-04-19)

I don't know who answered these questions or how accurate the answers are, but I guess we would just have to see.

If these are true for the bio gun, it should work in mame.  Using two won't work, ATM.

Just to backup the point, I also heard a couple say the PC virtual gun does not work in mame.

Just to chime in, the guns that support mouse emulation will work, but only to an extent.  I used to have to use my old Act-Labs that way to [try to] play MAME.  They were heavily dependant on you using high, standard screen resolutions like 640x480 @ 32-bit or better.. when you tried to use them with the non-standard resolutions MAME pops out, it would totally lose its accuracy.  Also, whenever you hit the edge of the screen, it would come 'uncalibrated' :(

I would hope the other guns handle this better, but wouldn't think they're any different..

But, if anyone has any success with them, would love to know..?  The one that has a VGA passthru sounds promising (maybe whoever made it will actually support theirs.. *coughAct-Labs* :P)..

Isn't this the method the Act Labs guns use, anyways? I thought the difference wasn't in the technology but in the quality. I just figured not all mouse-emulating guns are created equal.

Those old Act Labs guns really were crap. Gave it a try here on my home computer and it didn't work worth anything. Plus they connected through the game port. How accurate can a mouse be like that?

I thought the old ActLab gameport (GS) lightguns were joystick-type lightguns.  I think they had a joy-2-mouse proggie, but those suck for gaming.  So basically, the old ActLab gameport games were not mouse lightguns.  (Correct me if I'm wrong, I never had that gun.)  And that's why the sucked.
