Robotron just yanked me good
« on: February 07, 2009, 09:19:36 pm »
It would appear the bug is less specific than reported - because there were only two enforcers in about the upper middle of the board, I was in the left-middle, and the one closest to upper middle was the one that reset the game. I was MASTERFULLY kicking its ASS, too. I wonder, do the 'pros' keep that in mind so their game doesn't get wanked?

No idea what youre talking about mate.

BUT

A big Robotron question I have is - Does leaving one Grunt and shooting the "mom" really help? I read about it a long time ago...

On the one wave, with the big brain things there is one "Mikey" and a bunch of moms. They will not go for the Moms with Mikey alive on the board. Keep them away from him and pick him up last to get the bonus for all the moms.

No idea what Ummon is talking about either.

Supposedly, they aren't supposed to shoot I thought, too. Some of them do, though.  Anyways, the enforcer bug, YO! An ye may call yerselves Roobtootroon fahns. Alas.

Not sure if you're trying to be cryptic, or just have trouble getting your thoughts on the screen, but the issue you're alluding to doesn't fit your symptoms. Also don't know that it's duplicated in MAME.
I know the emulation speed was tweaked in .99, but if you play a real machine its a lot easier on the same settings so MAME definitely isn't perfect. I never had the actual hardware crash on me. Not sure how many times I played it, but it has to be above the crash odds.

I think this is more commonly reported as just shooting into the corners of the screen causing a crash, but this site has a specific description:

From http://www.arcadehits.net/datObase/rom.php?zip=robotron

The enforcer bug is when an enforcer is in the lower right corner and you shoot it diagonal there is a 1 in 3000 chance the game will reset. The reason for the game resetting is there is a bug in the diagonal explosion code for enforcers. The memory below the screen holds the stack and an unclipped pixel can get 'drawn' into the stack causing the game to lock and the watchdog to kick in and reset the system.

Yep.

A good score rests on how well I do on level 5.

I should have said that the Mom trick applies to the 1st level - if its true that is...

Sometimes. But, seriously, you're so missing out on the experience in not actually hearing the inflections through each of those sentences.

Eh, I'll pass. I've done pretty good so far not hearing your incoherent inflections.

Well, I stomped it enough tonight to make up for things. New high score for me. I was surprised to get above a million without dropping below seven dudes. Still, there's always that point that comes. I was amazed to find myself coming back up from it once or twice, but eventually it was done.

OH, and to certify the game cheats: some boards I'd cleared of tanks, and then died. But, lo, back again and there was a tank or two! Um, Larry, Eugene...
