keywiz prob
« on: January 13, 2009, 11:05:29 pm »
i have the keywiz eco and wired up the 1st player joysticks and buttons.all of the buttons were working except the joystick directions were reversed so i changed them.now the 6th player 1 button or z as it says in the included sheet doesn't work anymore.it worked perfect before and after wiring the joystick right it didnt work anymore.so i desoldered it because i thought it might be shorting out.so next i wrung the wire inside without soldering and still no signal so i tried the wire in another input and works fine but putting i back to the z input no signal again.it looks like the silver lining going around the holes is fading off.did i screw up my keywiz?

well i tried a keywiz (not a big fan of it, but was a quick fix). in all honesty it sounds like you might of screwed it up... the silver your referring to is the contact that the wire has to touch... it can come off if you've soldered on the joint to much or if your soldering iron is to hot! Seriously pay a little more and get the ipac!

Yea the keywiz does not take well to multiple rounds with the soldering iron. I have scorched 4 contacts on mine that will never work again.

In all honesty, there are few circuit boards that will, especially if the iron is too hot.

The solder versions are really intended for folks who don't have a lot of extra cash, have a good idea of what they are doing, and are going to wire the board once, maybe twice if they are careful.  If you need to experiment, the best thing is to not repeatedly heat the board contacts, rather leave a good connection in place and cut that wire about 6 inches away so you can interface to that.

Better yet, just get the screw terminal (ST) version and save the effort.  ;)

Yep - you broke it. Best thing to do especially with that model is to solder connections once, and wire into a terminal block:

I've done this with all my panels, and it allows for one install of the interface, and then you are free to swap connections around if need be.
