Hooking up Power Button with pushbutton

Hi all

Trying to turn one of my extra pushbuttons into the power button for my computer. It has two wires I need to connect, but I'm not sure which wire connects to ground and NC.

Here's the beauty of it - it doesn't make a damn bit of difference .  The pushbuttons act as a sudden closed circuit.  It doesn't really matter which end wires to where if you're hooking a power button up to your motherboard.

They are normal momentery SPST (single pole single throw) switches so it doesn't matter which of the microswitch's connector is ground.

i tried this and it didnt work for me..

i dont know what kind of wire to connect to the MB. it has those damn special connetors, so what to use?

know what i mean?

I couldn't find the connectors either, even at Radio Shack.  So I made my own!  Used Cat5e cable and jumpers off an old motherboard (like the ones of a hard drive).  Soldered the cable to the switch.  On the other end i used two jumpers, one jumper per prong on the MB.  Put the cable in one hole of the jumper (drop of solder) and used the the other hole to make the connection on the MB prong!  Taped the two little jumpers together for stability.  Hell of a rig!, but it works and it is a solid construction for me.
BTW, i used mini-momentary switches, i don't suggest soldering your nice pushbuttons, just use quick-disconnects on those with a crimper.  Sorry no camera otherwise i would post.

I used an old CD audio cable I had laying around. I cut down the one molex to 2 connectors with a razor knife. I cut off the other molex and crimped those wires to quick disconnects.

That's what I did as well...  just to clarify it's the "audio" cable that would run from old CD rom drives to your soundcard.

I'm sure rat shack has 'em you just need to be able to find a reasonably competant employee (good luck) and be able to show picture or explain it properly --- Oscar knows the technical name for the type of plug we're talking about.

Regardless, this shouldn't be this hard.  If you are using an existing PC in a case there's already a run of wire from the momentary switch on the front of your PC case to your motherboards power switch.  If you are so inclined... cut it in the middle and extend the wires to a different momentary pushbutton or to an arcade button.

I mean, you are turning on your PC somehow now... just make the wire longer to a "new" switch... *shrug*

If you're really squeemish you could just set your bios to startup by key stroke so say...  hitting a pushbutton wired through a keyboard enocder will turn on your system... or set in your bios power up after power failure/etc...

You can buy a replacement computer power switch from an electronics store and just cut the wires.  It already has the special connector on it to connect to the Mother Board.

You could just rape the connector from an old case.  I've got at least 15 cases here, all with those little connectors.  I'm sure you could find a case with the connectors.  Doesnt' have to go to a switch, an LED would work as well.

Personally, I don't have a case at all. I mounted the PC inside the cab, so now that its mounted, I can't turn it on.

So, I will see if i can do that audio cable thing, since I have an extra one somewhere.
