How do you download these games? Do you have to create an account?

http://touhou.wikia.com/wiki/Buying_Stuff

lists a lot of online retailers - I've pieced together my collection from these links, amazon.jp, and ebay.  There is also a demo available for the latest game 12 - Undefined Fantastic Object that came out in March - though I don't know where that's available, google should be your friend.

All the games are in Japanese - however the wiki has english patches available for all the games.

Thrustburst (Free!)
Umlautgames

Everyday Shooter
A Queasy Game

As a fair warning these games are quite difficult, and the control schemes may seem unusual on a cabinet but they are very much possible. If a challenge does not scare you then I highly recommend them and the controls are programmable.

I am surprised not to see many of the more popular indie games listed as many of them are inspired by arcade games and work perfectly on a PC driven cabinet. I'll try to remember to add more when I have had time to test them out on my cabinet.

Anyone try Jeff Minter's latest for PC called "SPace Giraffe"? Curious if that would work as I like his Tempest style games.

SYNSO, Squid Harder, WAR ---Bad words, bad words, whatcha gonna do? Whatcha gonna do when saint censors you?---
http://bagfullofwrong.co.uk/bagfullofwords/

great stuff.. feels much like the Windows Grid Wars game (runs better than that at 640x480). i run the latter two. just craziness

unlike grid/geometry wars/robotron, all these use is a stick and a button (not remappable in the program it seems.. but not a problem if your button 1 is Z, Ctrl, Enter, Space.. or anything else that might actually be used to fire on a keyboard.......and there's always auto-fire so you don't need a button). clean, quick exit on a couple Esc presses

Found this one today. Remake of an old PC game called SkyRoads. It's a blast to play! Highly configurable too.  :applaud:  Should work great in a cab!

wow.. i used to play Skyroads! i'd forgotten about it.
the page you linked links to a page where you can download the old DOS game in full. i just played it fine in XP... looks like it would work fine with a cab, though you have to use something mapped to the spacebar to jump. and Enter/Esc for menus/exiting. i'll check out this remake too. thanks!

ETA: had to use VDMsound to get Skyroads' music working. http://sourceforge.net/projects/vdmsound

Ya I tried the original too. Didn't work on my Vista64 system. I just used dosbox and it worked great. Not sure which one I like better.

does DOSbox help with resolution issues? and did music work for you? i mentioned it working fine on XP earlier, but my cab monitor flipped out over the res.   i figure DOS emulation is one more thing my cab doesn't need.. but for skyroads maybe

Spheres of Chaos

I remember wanting to put this in my cab years ago and had forgotten about it until reading this thread jogged my memory.  It's psychedelic asteroids.

http://www.spheresofchaos.com

**Update**  I now remember why I didn't add it.  Game play is cab friendly but the startup menu is not....

all these games are joystick and buttons controls.

Ether Vapor - a fantastic Shoot Em Up that switches from vertical to horizontal.
Get it Here
http://edelweiss.skr.jp/works/ethervapor/index.html

Genetos - A shooter game that lets you play through the history of Shmups. Old school to present day.
Gotta watch this video to appreciate.
Get it here.
http://www.tatsuya-koyama.com/software/wg002_genetos_eng.html

Irukandji - One of my favorites ;D Irukandji is a fun score attack shooter, set in an abstract underwater trench. You fly your ship against the flow of hundreds of amazing procedurally animated sea monsters, blasting your way to the final showdown – a Giant Enemy Crab!

Great graphics and it only cost a $1.00. Buy it and support this guy.

Not sure if people have much luck getting Steam to work with a non-internet-enabled computer (like an arcade cab) but...

Steam's having its annual after-holiday sale, and today they're including discounts on the popcap games. You can get most of the games for $8 each, or the whole pack for $50. Thought people would like to know.

NS-Tower is a game that works well with Arcade Controls and is a great game.  It is the basis for the Arcade/GBA game Tower and Shaft along with it's sister game NS-Shaft.

The only problem I am having is trying to figure out a way to make it fullscreen.  I would love any input that might lead to a solution.

Has anyone tried Tron 2.0 on a cab?

I believe that game has gamepad support.

For those who are running thier cab in pure DOS (None of the DOS version of any MAME supports Dragon's Lair), the DOS CD Version of DLair is CAB friendly.
As long as you have you 1st button configured to ENTER or Enter_pad, you can play teh game flawlessly. This version however has some scene removed (Burning Rope, Circle Platform falling down). All in all, it fun and easy (no coin needed). The game continues and you start from a certain point when you reached it.

Anyone else have this in thier cab ? How about Space Ace the CD-ROM DOS version ?

I searched through the topic and could not find anyone who mentioned these, but if for some reason I just missed it I apologize for posting it again.

I have a few games to add:
Star Control 2 – or its open source port the Ur-Quan Masters.  You will need one button mapped to enter, I just map player 1.  I dont suggest playing the story mode, just Super Melee - it can be as intense as a good game of Warlords.
- Joystick and two action buttons - two player
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Star_control_2
http://sc2.sourceforge.net/

Braid – though I am sure most of yall know this one.  It was released on the PC but sadly has hard mapped keys.  It is still playable but may be cause more frustration than it is worth.
- Joystick and three action buttons
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Braid_(video_game)

Spelunky – Think of it as a faster and friendly version of Spleunker.
- Joystick and four action buttons (six if you want to be fancy)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spelunky
http://www.spelunkyworld.com/

VVVVVV - And yes that is the name.  It is a quirky gravity platformer that you really just have to try.
- Joystick and one action button
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/VVVVVV

Robotopia – Ok so this one is not known at all, I only know it because I met one of the programmers at a convention, but the game is a decent Megaman like platformer.  It just has a lot of button needs and you need to use a keyboard on first boot.
- Joystick and seven action buttons

Anyone try Jeff Minter's latest for PC called "SPace Giraffe"? Curious if that would work as I like his Tempest style games.

Space giraffe looks good and configurable and is only $2 on steam this week, I plan to try this out tonight

NAMCO PC Downloads Store!
« Reply #104 on: April 16, 2010, 03:25:04 pm »

haven't seen this posted here before...
http://www.namcogames.com/pc_games/
Namco are selling finally selling some new exclusive arcade titles such as Star Trigon.  Also available are newer versions of Dig Dug and Pac-Man which look very nice for a horizontal setup.  A rehash of Burgertime is available, too, but...uh...I think I would have to try it to say anything nice about it.  Some other titles such as Quantz look good for a cabinet also.  My brief apologies if this store has already been mentioned:  I am too excited ATM to read through the whole thread.  I will try to remember to post again if these are difficult/impossible to configure for cabinet use, once I have tried any of them.

Edit: eh, sorry!  I tried some of Namco's pc downloads. They are not cab friendly unless you have a trackball and mouse buttons or mouse emulation buttons.  The Burgertime Deluxe is very ...unique.  I have yet to try Quantz and may not.  The Dig Dug is alright.  The Pac-man is really for people who do not have cabs, it seems, because the sound has a lot of reverberation and the graphics have a sort of built-in bezel reflection.  The previous PC releases are better modern versions the PAC games.  I have not played the arcade PCB of Star Trigon, and as this PC version may be the closest I get for a while unless someone sells it on eBay sometime; I think I will download the full version of this one.

Thanks a lot for this thread!  I've been using this thread a lot for new indie game ideas for my cabinet.  Is there a good site to keep up with all the new indie games as well as researching some of the old ones too?  I have to use a bunch of different sites to learn about all the good indie games and wondered if there was one site which was all inclusive?  thanks a lot!

Couple sites I frequent:

http://www.abandonia.com/

I have a few others too but they are bookmarked on another computer. I'll try and remember to find them later.

Not a pc game I guess but I just added virtualgameboy to my console, so add every single gameboy/advance game to the list
I didnt even have to reconfig the controls between the p1 and p2 buttons you have them all

Also I play LightCyclesGGC, and other standalone executable pc games from the Atomic front end

Tron 2.0 actually works somewhat

Don't know if this has been mentioned yet, but i just dug up an old freebie game from like 2006 that is absolutely perfect for a cab, has a very arcade like menu and everything.  I started to play it a little earlier and thought about this thread.  Lo and behold, the website to download it still exists and everything. (I had it on my portable HD from years passed)

It's a combination of tetris (I guess) and a beat em up game...don't know how to describe it, you punch these guys made out of blocks and when they die, they're blocks pile up, when they get high enough, you can climb out of the arena thing and go to a bonus round based on your time left.   It even has a high score list.

Be forwarned, a lot of physics and simple 3d shapes at play here, does require at least some decent video hardware to run smoothly passed level 3.

Enjoy!

I don't have a certain game but a link to a database of Indie games that might have some gems in them.

that genetos game is pretty fun.. the graphics aren't great but it's cool to see game transition from old shmups to new shmups.

I just stumbled across this great video http://www.pixelprospector.com/2010/06/235-free-indie-games-in-10-minutes/

Which gives you a couple of seconds footage from 235 different indie games, follow the instructions at the beginning of the video!

Some nice looking stuff there, but haven't had much chance to check it out yet.

Please post any cab friendly gems if you find any

I still haven't tried to launch steam games from a front end, but Razor 2 is a cool vertical shump.

Quote from: Default Keys
Use the keyboard arrows to move
your ship.
Z or CTRL shoot primary weapon
X or Enter shoot slot weapon
C or Space select Slot weapon
V or ALT select primary weapon
ESC Pause game
F10 Quit game suddenly
F11 Screenshot
F12 Cheat codes and passwords
Otherwise, they keys are can be configured from the game menu.  I have played it for about an hour and I am real happy with the $9.99 purchase.

Get Razor 2 here.  You can get a demo from the same place.

Just came across a game called Multihero ( http://multihero.sitesled.com/ )

Similar in design to Super Smash Bros. It allows you to map controls for 4 players to the keyboard.

Features characters from other games (Ryu and Spiderman for example), unlockable characters, level editor.

Not the most fantastic game but a bit of fun for a free download.

Has anyone tried Street Fighter 4?  My only concern is if the resolution can get low enough for my monitor (640x480)
I'd love to play some Street Fighter 4 on my cab
