Vertical games on a Horizontal?
« on: March 05, 2002, 08:21:19 am »
I know you guys have probably heard this dilemma a bazillion times but my problem is when I try to run vertical games like Galaga, Pacman, Ms Pacman, Centipede on my horizontal monitor (using vsyncmame) they appear perfect alright BUT in the middle of the screen in about a 6X6 inch square :(.

I am using ArcadeOS as a front end. Any ideas how I can go about fixing these games so they stretch to fit better (I realize they will never be perfect because this is a horizontal monitor). What's strange is some vertical games like Frogger and Gyruss work without any problems at all but like I said,  most of the other classics don't.

Thanks!

-Jeff

Isn't there a version of MAME called StretchMAME that will stretch a vertical game to cover the entire screen?  That may be what you're looking for.  Of course, everything will be out of proportion on vertical games.

the stretchmame features are now in the main distribution (hwstretching).

I've always got better results from pure mame, but others say that stretchmame is better.

btw, stretchmame was based on mame32, not pure mame.

btw, mames hwstretching is only as good as your video cards directx support.

I should clarify that I am using a Wico 19" Sum-20c monitor so ArcadeOS and vsyncmame is what I am using and not a VGA/PC monitor.

Now that I think about it, Centipede, Galaga, Pacman, Ms Pacman were all appearing small. These are all Namco games right? Hmmm ... could it be my video card doing this? I have a built-in Trident Blade 3D video card.

Thanks!

Actually Centipede was made by Atari. Have you tried Advanced MAME?

Thanks John,

And yes, I switched to AdvanceMAME and could not be happier. What those guys have done with that program is amazing. The verticals look great on my horizontal now.

:)

Thanks,

-Jeff

One trick I've learned is that almost ALL games appear correct at either 640x480, or 800x600.  When the PRESS ANY KEY TO CONTINUE screen comes up when you start the game, look at the vertical resolution listed there.  It will be something close to 240 or 300.  Double that and you get either 480 or 600.  Manually configure your games to run at one of these rez and all will be dandy!
