What is the smallest cab you have seen.
« on: September 12, 2008, 03:48:42 pm »
I have a coworker who wants me to make a desktop arcade like a foot by half.
I was wondering the smallest cab any of you ever made or seen?

  • Yeah, owning a MAME cab only leads to owning real ones. MAME just isn't good enough. It's a gateway drug.

That's what I was looking for as a reply. I think that's the smallest one you can find on here.

Please note the full size control panel, stainless steel frame, home theater speakers and, oh yeah, the projector.

This one is pretty small (but patrickl's is easily the best, IMO).

I built a completely playable arcade last summer:

http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?topic=68683.0

If you make it with a LCD, you can shave down the depth. It is 20" tall.

See this before Patrick, and I absolutely love it!

One question, what coins does that thing take?

I thought of doing this for a couple of seconds then I thought whenever you move the joystick the whole screen would shake, No?

The stainless steel square tubing is heavy stuff. The whole thing weighs about 55 pounds, so it doesn't shake.

But, it has nylon feet and on smooth surfaces exuberant gameplay will cause it to slide around and shift the picture. I'm hoping that rubber feet will fix that minor issue.

Well, it's a minor issue to me because I have other MAME cabinets for my "game nights". I built it to bring to parties and celebrations where most people have never seen a MAME cabinet, and in that kind of casual atmosphere, it's a blast.

That would work great, but would take the cool factor down a notch by not having everything self contained.

I guess saying it's self contained is already stretching it. I already carry the power cord, wireless keyboard and the projector's remote separately.

BTW: I may have broken the record for most Velcro used in a build. The computer is velcroed to the bottom, the projector is velcroed to the computer.  The power bricks are velcroed to the bottom and each other. The 4 sides are velcroed to the cab...

Shaker, if your self contained port-a-cab rig is usually played while sitting on a coffee table (which I imagine it is), just build in a clamping system to clamp it to the table's front edge like a PC steering wheel. That'd hold it tight.

Eric.

Wonderful idea! I will come up with some sort of table clamp.

P.S. I set it up on a normal height table, and play standing. But it might be playable sitting, if it's set on a coffee table. I'll have to try it and see.

How did you manage to find such a giant sized cat? That cab looks really small next to that cat on steroids.  :laugh2:

That's like a dinosaur-cat. Big.
