first thing you need to do is correctly identify your monitor make/model because some monitors require certain input voltages to work
for instance if you connect a nanao ms8 direct to the mains it will blow up as it needs an isolation transformer to run correctly
if you connect a hantarex polo1 to direct mains it will run perfectly

if you cannot id your monitor then provide some photos for us to id it

The Real Bob Roberts site has this article http://therealbobroberts.net/acwiring.html
It should be a starting point for you.

you will need to get a basic multimeter so you can check the voltages and earth, even now i never plug things in after rewiring without checking the voltages

what are you going to do with this cab, mame or jamma?

im going to mame it hopefully!!!!!!!!
i was given a pc, monitor, speakers, keyboard and mouse free from a good mate. it was lying in a plastic crate in his boat shed so he said some1 should put it to use.  he didnt thik it still worked but goes 100%. its running windows 98 2nd edition so i think that means made in 1999 - has 8.4 gb hard drive,  should b enough for the games i want, not really into the new stuff, more sf2, golf greats, kung fu, pac land etc. i bought 2 new joysticks, ---steaming pile of meadow muffin--- loads of buttons, cherry switches and a fully wired i-pac so just clip and play i hope.  Andy at gremlin solutions has put up with a lot of phone calls  lolol but top bloke - would def buy from again cause he doesnt ---That which is odiferous and causeth plants to grow--- the answers he gives and if he doesnt know he will say.
the cab is in 95% new condition so  a few scrapes and scuffs but nowt that cant b fixed. full workin coin mech, marquee which looks like new for something made 15 years ago roughly. ive put the extra 6th button in for each player, coin button for each player, pin ball buttons/flippers on each side and 4 admin on the front of the control panel.  all buttons have been wired to ipac with a mates help. more fiddly than difficult even for 2 novices.  i have all my emulators and roms on my laptop so just a case of transfering onto disc and then loaded onto desktop.

i dont wanna replace my lovely 25 inch arcade monitor with a 17 inch pc 1 - that would kinda defeat the purpose and look daft in my cab so really the $64,000 question is how do i wire my monitor to my power supply and that to my pc, marque, speakers etc, by the way there r orig speakers in the cab as well as pc speakers. pc 1s r just a plug in so do i wire cab 1s to the power supply????

its been kinda not 2 difficult upto now - i just dunno were to start to wire this baby up. i have learned alot off the net over the last 3 months of surfin everything but cant seem to find step by step stuff on this part so donald ducked now. i will get the model of the monitor --tomorrow is too many letters to type so instead I'll just say the day after today-- nite - mate came round with a nice bag of weed, u no how things can hit the backburner for a day or 2  hehe.  And mayb  few pics 2 show u were im at would prop help 150%

any thoughs or sites or pics wold b a great help and thanks for ur help and interest

Here is all you need to get power to your monitor if requires an isolation transformer.  Read everything but the part about the switching power supply which you don't need since you are using a PC.
http://homearcade.org/BBBB/acwiring.html
Also if you don't need a the iso  transformer for your monitor you would just need to attach the cord the monitors board if one wasn't supplied.

Then get a surge protector and this from sears.

well nice and easy for you, this monitor can plug straight to the wall socket.
it is better for this to go through a main filter first(which i expect your cab has) as this will counter any surges
tbh if you are intending to install a pc then just install an antisurge extension lead and you can then plug the pc and monitor into that
i use www.picoodle.com for uploading my images, its real easy

hantarex polo 1 are a 15khz only monitor(low resolution),to connect this to a pc you will need either a avga card or a vga card that supports low res and use soft 15k

this monitor should not require a video amp

the left hand plug is for the monitor voltage, from left to right its live/earth/neutral 220-240 vac normal european mains voltage

the right hand plug is for the video signal(from the game board or pc),from left to right its vertical sync/horizontal(composite sync)/video ground/blue/green/red

the earth to the chassis is fine on the mains input

the other wires on the green connector have to be connected to whatever system you are using,if you are using a pc with mame then you will connect the pc video card-the easy option is to use a ultimarc avga card and a vga breakout cable
http://www.ultimarc.com/avgainf.html
i was incorrect about one very silly thing on a earlier reply, the horizontal sync is pin 6 not pin 5 of the video input plug

well thats the most simple method of connecting your pc,there are cheaper alternatives but involves installing soft 15k and getting a vga card that supports low res specs-i am not sure how tech you are with pc so thats why i recommend the ultimarc route, also its important to note that andy at ultimarc gives good backup if you get a problem

and yes i am saying that the green connector(video input) is wired perfectly correctly

you should read all the info on the ultimarc site concerning the vga card/breakout cable and the i-pac that you are going to install

black box thingy?sounds like a switch mode power supply,if so then you do not need it
any photos yet so i can be sure

you can power up the monitor, you will hear a static flash and see a orange glow from the neck of the tube-i doubt you will see anything on the screen
if you take anything out like the power supply then make sure you insulate/make safe any bare wires

i bet your cab already has a mains filter which acts like an antisurge anyway
mains filter look like this and are connected right where the power lead enters the cab

nowt on screen as u say but very faint buzz in siund so assume all ok.

were the mains enter the cab there is a metal bracket that when door closed presses a switch down.  also there is an on/off switch.
where the wire enters on the back of panel s a small silver box(matchbox size) with 3 prongs on it?

to be perfectly honest i would not change any of the power wiring in your cab,it will be wired to high european standards
this make it real easy for you to connect the pc as all you will need to do is join the power supply mains wire to a kettle lead using connector strip
you don't really need the anti surge stuff,if you want to install it then fine but unless you have serious power surges and tropical storms in your part of Ireland then i doubt its needed

yeah you can do that, just make sure you use insulated spade terminals if you connect to the door switch, otherwise just use some connector block and connect the 4 way to the ac wires of the power supply
the power supply is not needed so if you disconnect the 2 ac and the earth wires you can join them to the 4 way(you must use something like connector block or a junction box of some kind)

what croc clips??? ???

lost u there matey.

i assume i will - - - - - connect monitor plug, marquee, pc etc to a 4 way adapter in the cab.  i will cut the plug of and attach 3 metal clips like the  ones in an ipac etc. attach these 3 clips to the surge with the 3 prongs thats attached to the mains outlet at bottom of cab. then the kettle lead as u call it to the mains.  when i want it all on just flick the mains switch.

is all that right??

bloody hell you ask a lot of questions very quickly
always take the nice, simple options-do not change any of the wiring for the marquee/monitor/door switch and on off switch, leave it as it is
just connect the 4 way to the power supply ac wiring using a connector block

you will need either pc powered speakers or a small amplifier

no you are gonna get rid of the power supply and just utilise the ac wiring that it has and join it to the 4 way
by doing it this way you do not have to make any changes whatsoever except removing the old power supply which is no longer needed
if you start moving loads of wires,as in your idea, you may find that the cab could be become unsafe and as you are a noob you really want to take the easy, safe option

no
leave all the wiring as it is and just connect the 4 way extension cable to the power supply ac cable
its a 2 second job,

nah,i was eating my dinner
filetes de cerdo con salsa champiñones y patatas fritas

o.k yes what you said
all you need to do is connect the 4 way to that mains input socket,so all you need to do is put spade connectors on the 4 way cable

so in my words cut the plug of the 4 way - connect spade(croc clips  lolol) to the 3 wires and then connect to the silver box on the mains were the kettle cord connects to. yes

thats why i went for this - looked at 100's on ebay and got this for £100. just sold the mother and daughter board on ebay for £41. spent £85 on buttons, switches, j-sticks and ipac so stands me £145 and by looking at that vga card i think i will have a top machine for £200 or roughly 240 euro. not bad i think as these are selling on ebay for £300-£400 plus £50 delivery.

your totally right about the control panel - loads of room to work with for extra buttons. my only gripe is i the middle buttons arent in line -instead of a new control panel just drilled a hole above - mortal kombat only uses 5 for some stang reason i do not know and care to learn either. i mean  this is was made in 1992 i think so not bad for its age. wont getmany abuse with me so should staythat way

yo no worries,
used to train techs for coin op companies(still do),nice pics btw -is that a spliff ;D
don't throw out the coin controls credit board as you will need that if you want to utilise the c220 coin mech
interesting,in the 2nd pic there is a small pcb near the coin mech-it looks like an amp, where does it go to?
i am not in the u.k,i live in spain hence the spanish"filetes de cerdo"stuff,i am originally from kent
i am surprised you use u.k plugs in ireland(unless you are from ulster that is)
the 3rd pic reminds me of a pasta dish i made the other day ;)
difficult sometimes for me to explain things as i have been doing this every day for 22 years so i tend to forget people do not know some of the technical words i use
make sure you keep us updated with this project and if you need any advice just pm or post

if pic 2 is pointing at the coin mech then the  small board hanging is all the controls for the monitor - brightness, contrast ect and the thing on the shelf is the guts of the pc speakers. drilled a few holes and mouned the speakers beside the coin mech(sound from below and above is my thinking).   that is the board from the speaker with the volume and on/off  button

the trouble with vga cables is they do not have the same colour code as an arcade standard wiring, this is when you need  a multimeter to trace which wire goes to which pin and the ultimarc breakout guide.
a big word of warning-do not attempt to power this monitor using a normal vga card or you will blow the horizontal output transistor

mmmm,chinese-now i am hungry

well you seem to learning very quickly so maybe you do not need to take the arcade vga card route, check this post and read
http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?topic=66402.0
you would need a card that will support the low resolutions needed for the polo chassis,if you want the easy plug and play option then you need this
http://www.ultimarc.com/avgainf.html
as long as your pc mobo supports agp or pci,you would need to state which you need

in my opinion if this is your first mame build then get both the arcade vga card and the vga breakout cable from ultimarc as you cannot go wrong, plenty of support and in the future with the experience you have gained you can dabble a bit with other options

this is your call mate, you're pretty well atm

what did you get from the chinese?? :P

hahaha,
your wiring is o.k,not great but will suffice-looks safe(ish)
the final picture which you ask about the marquee earth, all exposed metal parts should be linked the earth-you can attach this earth the the monitor metal frame

you really need to see where that earth goes, remove the game legend and just see where the earth goes to be certain

i was just being picky on the safety front, don't concern yourself its o.k

well the wiring is inside the cab so its not important how pretty it is,whats important is the quality of connection and safety
so now all you have to do is run some voltage and earth tests with the multimeter then wait for the avga card and you should be rolling

i would use powered stereo pc speakers, gut them and install the board/control part in the coin door area for access then just connect to your original speakers-but i though you have already done that

thats a 12v bulb(as its u.k spec)
the black wires should be ground/common
the red wires are 12v dc
you can open you pc case and find a spare 4 way power supply connector(like the one that plugs to the cdrom drive)
on a pc power supply the 4 way plug is
black=ground/common
red=+5dc
yellow=+12vdc
you could use something like this to connect
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/4-PIN-MOLEX-PC-POWER-SPLITTER-CABLE-LEAD-TO-2-X-5-25_W0QQitemZ180269241341QQcmdZViewItem?hash=item180269241341&_trksid=p3286.m14.l1318

your cab is gonna get real messy if you start chopping up wires and using connector block,i would suggest investing in a cheap soldering iron and some of those connectors i showed you,you can get those connectors in kit form from pc shops or maplins

none of those connectors you emailed will fit straight to pc power connector, but obviously you could cut the wires off and use them

i think you are rushing this, rome was not built in one day ;)

your bulb will work if you connect it to +12 and ground,at some point you will need +12 and +5 for the coin controls credit board as well if you want the coin mech to work
2 ways you can do this, either connect in to the pc power supply or you can use the old cab psu

i would re-use the cab power supply myself as it will make things more simple in the long run(and cost bugger all)

photos of the psu first before you connect it please

hahaha,
look for these plugs in the pc case(make sure it one not being used, there are always spares),you can use either

connect the black wire of the bulb to the either of the two black wires on the power supply plug, connect the red wires of the bulb to the yellow wire of the power supply plug

does not matter with a bulb which way around the wires go,connect one bulb wire to the yellow and the other to the black of the pc power supply plug

please remember this is a unique situation,EVERY other time the connection of the ground and +12v would be extremely important

this is unique as a bulb is not polarity sensitive,in other words you can plug a bulb in either way around
almost all components that need a voltage to run are polarity sensitive,i.e if you connect a capacitor in back to front it will explode

get it? 8)

cut the black and yellow wires of the pc plug/connect to the bulb using connector block/drill or bend a hole in the pc case or run the wires through a gap in the back

i have a good idea what you need,
a new mobo bundle, something a lot more powerful than you have atm
and a new power supply as a new mobo will not run on the one you have

you could buy the lot on ebay for a few quid

you need a motherboard that has either a agp or pcie slot(from this you can order the avga card)
try to get a mobo with onboard sound
the processor needs to be over 2ghz
a nice amount of ram
then of course you need a power supply with the guts to run it all
