mala setup& direct 3d help

i installed mala and the 3 files catver ect.
when i start mala it doesnt , show the layout file  (alien from mala site) its pointed to in mala.
when i start mala it shows the roms ive tryed to filter (japan) and clones
when i try run  it comes up a proposed display mode not suppoerted on device /display 1
unable to initiate direct 3d
unable to complete windows creation

i cant find direct 3d to try it.

spec is

athlon 600 cpu
512mb mem
6gb hd
voodoo 3000 gfx card,
windows xp pro

anyone any ideas?

also cant find anyware to get  artwork and snaps as it sayed on "how to install mala" thread try mame.net
 this is 1st try at installing a fe

ive read set up guide

* i think its to do with mame, it is looking for direct 3d but i dont know how to change it to something else

had to change version of mame to 0.99 to get it to work, any version abovethis didnt work.

still cant get any of the alien theme to display, just got the game txt in the right position , but no pics
