POLL: Pole Position MAME Monitor
« on: June 06, 2008, 01:52:28 pm »
I am trying to decide if I should go authentic and run only MAME drivers on my Pole Position MAME project or if I should go high-res allowing me to play PC based games on the cab too (at the expense of arcade authentic display when playing MAME drivers).

Opinions?

my reply would depend on your plans for the cab, aside from the monitor is it going to be stock? or is there going to be a new cp, or what?

if stock I say go authentic, but unless I can know what your other changes you plan on making I cannot advise

The CP will look stock but I am installing a 4-way stick and a Brake/Throttle assembly instead of just throttle.

Do many pc based driving games use a 360 degree optical steering wheel?

I think some of them allow the use of a mouse.

Anyways, this brings me back to a product that I have always wanted to see - a hybrid steering wheel. Have a 270 wheel that can disengage to be a 360 wheel.

Go Authentic -

Most PC\Platform driving games are meant to be played in a comfortable position (sitting down) for long periods of time. Arcade driving games are shorter games in comparison. I don't think you'll want to stand-up playing the PC\Platform driving games.

Remember that you can technically go 640x480 interlaced for PC games with an arcade monitor.  It looks great in games (flickery in Windows though).  Would the PC games you were planning on playing require higher than VGA?  If not, definitely go arcade monitor IMO.

I voted go high rez, but it really depends on what all you want to do.

I have a 21" Dell Trinitron flat tube CRT in mine right now and it looks and plays great.

with a 30" stool, and a 40" cp  I could be fine on the pedal being 5'11"

I used to play a stand up Outrun cab sitting on a stool no problem.  I am 6'4".

I did a Pole Position MAME and put a CGA monitor in there.  Looked great until the monitor started having issues...  Then I took it out and put a PC monitor in there and it looked great.
I no longer have the Pole Position cabinet, but it went to a good home.  It now lives at a daycare facility and the kids are enjoying the heck out of it.

I would say go with a PC monitor if you can fit it in there.  Enjoy the PC driving games... if you  are putting a 4 way shifter in there, you might as well have it play as many game as it will handle.

Authentic arcade monitor, for sure.  If it were a 270deg wheel then there would be more of an argument to use a higher res. screen.

PS, you may be interested in a 360deg wheel game only build of Mame I have been working on.  It fixes refresh rate, and gear shift issues, plus some other stuff to make setting up controls easier.  PM me if interested...
