connecting multiple buttons together with the u360
« on: May 11, 2008, 10:45:44 am »
hey,

I'm currently designing my first arcade/jukebox/console/pinball emulation cabinet. i don't plan to build it before the summer vacation but that doesn't matter because i already found out that i need that time just for the design phase since i keep running into decisions I've made that turn out to be to expensive/difficult/unpractical/stupid/big/etc

i was thinking about using the u360 joystick and connecting my buttons to it but i found out that i don't have enough buttons that way. I would like to have 2 buttons on the side of the cabinet for pinball games but i can only connect 8 buttons to the u360 and I already have plans for those.  since i only intend to use the keys for pinball games i thought that i could connect several keys to the same connector so that they do the exact same thing. i could do this with buttons that i don't need for pinball and it would solve my problem. Is this possible or is there some issue with this that i don't know about?

i was also wondering in case this won't work what the cheapest way is to have a few additional buttons. could i take apart a mouse and remap it's keys for use in emulators?

and a last question: is there a way to use the u360 as a mouse? it's not really needed but it could be useful from time to time

greetings,

Wouter

Wire each of the pinball buttons in parallel with the other shared button (daisy-chain the signal line as well as the ground) and it will work.
The Ultramap software has a mouse emulation setting for the stick, but for mouse buttons you might need additional software, I can't remember.

No extra software. Just set the stick to mouse mode in Ultramap and the first three buttons become mouse buttons.

I have mine set to change to mouse mode when I exit Mamewah. That way I can navigate windows without needing my mouse.

thanks! that sorts out a lot of worries for me!

btw: is your avatar in any way inspired by the dark tower books? just wondering since they rule?

It's art from a collection of various authors that included the first release of Stephen King's "The Little Sisters of Eluria" which stars Roland (the story is reprinted in Everything's Eventual). It's a side-story from the Dark Tower that sheds light on certain things, and it also ties into Black House. (Excellent book if you haven't read it, but read The Talisman first! You'll be lost without reading the first book.)

Here's a larger version:
