Hi Guys, I need help with a problem with my John Elway Team Quarterback, We just moved and know the game will not power up, the game worked fine before we moved, the game was moved with care and was stored for a few months before brought into the home and now when I plug it in it does nothing, where do I start to fix or repair the problem.
Please help if you can.
Thanks Keith

Does the game play blind?  As in, can you put in a quarter and play the game without seeing it on the monitor.

When you power up the game is there an orange glow in the neck of the monitor?

My initial guess, after moving cabinets, is dry solder joints.  But pictures of the monitor chassis would help.

Thanks for the reply Lutus, To answer your question no it does not play blind, it doesn't even power up I plug it in and used a outlet tester to see if it was getting power, the power runs to the on off switch and then it goes to a fuse. When I test the power on both sides of the fuse there is none but I don't know where to start I can post some pics in a few minutes if that you'd help.

Take the fuse out of the fuse holder (with the cab unplugged) and test the fuse with a multimeter.  Also, unplug the marquee light, just to rule that puppy out.

I unpluged the marquee, I don't have a multimeter. Where can I get one (Radio Shack) and how much are there. And what should I be looking for when I test it. Thanks Again.

There are numerous "how to's" on digital multi meter's.

Does your machine have an isolation transformer in it?

Is this your machine...

http://www.klov.com/game_detail.php?game_id=8237

If it is, I am not familiar with the Cinemat System.

First thing is to check that fuse.

Yes that is my arcade game and  do believe it has a transformer also. I'll get a multimeter tomorrow what setting do I use to check the fuse.

Also make sure you've not jarred the rear door or any door that may have an AC interlock switch... could be as simple as the interlock switch is open now... so no juice!

Thanks...I checked those and didn't see anything when I plugged it in after it was in storage it acted like it was going to power up then it just quit. Do you think it's the power supply or the isolation transformer I believe it has to be one of those items the game worked perfect before the move and storage.

It is really hard to say... Lutus has you on the right track here... checking the power path to see where it stops... could be a fuse, could be in the power supply... I doubt its an isolation transformer....

Start with where it comes in first... then go to the next and the next and so on...

Do you have the drawing set for the machine?

Yes, I have the Service & Diagnostic Manual. And it has Cabinet Wiring Diagram it seems pretty simple come in there is a Hot(Black), Ground(Green), and Neutral(White) is the Neutral a Hot Wire also? I really think it's the power supply. Does anyone on here sell a new one I can post a couple pics if you'd like, let me know what you think.
Thanks Keith

...take it one step at a time... you really should find out where the power (if thats the issue) ceases to exist...

I checked KLOV to and used "Quarterback" as a reference figuring John Elway's version probably not too different... it has a decent flow chart on things to check...

...work the ac power to the dc power supply... then check your DC voltages... do this using your manuals flow chart..

I've attached a pic... is this in your manual?

Yes..That flow chart is very close to mine, I don't have a interlock switch just a on and off switch. I didn't get the chance to get a multimeter today at work so I guess we are done for today, I'll pick up one tomorrow and then I hope we can get to the bottom of this, thanks for all your help guys I really appeciate it.

One easy way is to check the input voltage to the monitor.  You would have to have a multimeter though.

Unplug the monitor power.  Should be a two connector molex plug.  Set your DMM to AC voltage over 120 V.  Probably the 200 VAC setting.

Put one probe in each pin coming from the power supply and turn on the machine.  You should register around 120V to 130V.  In that ball park.  If you get that then you are getting power to the monitor.

Otherwise you will read very low, or 0V.

You need a DMM to continue on further though.

Okay...I'll check it tomorrow and let you know what happens...I do have a extra power supply that I believe is good that I can try also, or should I try the voltage to the monitor first.

UPDATE...Okay I believe it's the monitor. I don't know what you call it but at the base or stem of the monitor there is a circuit board attaced to it. And it looks as if somebody rigged it years ago. I pulled the circuit board off the stem and the stem looks to be bad. I'll post pictures tomorrow. I don't know if that part can be repaied or if I need to repair the monitor. I believe its a 25 or 27 inch zenith monitor, what does a new one sell for or can this be repaired.
Please advise.
Thanks Keith

I believe you are talking about the yolk.

Do post pictures and we can advise on whether it is repairable.

Also, Zenith probably made the tube, but probably not the chassis.

We will have to have pictures to help further.

Yes they are if you look at the board pic it looks like it was attahced to the stem with some sort of bonding agent of some sort. I the 3rd pic where I'm hold it the plastic thing is cracked. I'll try and take better pics tomorrow. Sorry for the poor resolution.

Oh, I think what you are talking about is the factory installed glue.

Basically, the factory would do a convergence on the tube (yolk rings) and install the neck board and they would put drops of what I would describe as rubbery glue in different places.  This would hold all the pieces and adjustments together during shipment and when moving or handling the monitors.

Take some better pictures, but my guess is it will be alright.

But we can tell you if we see better pics.

Something doesn't look right with that last pic... the plastic key-way on the yoke looks tweaked...

Did the neck board come of easy or did you have to give it some gusto to get it to pop off?

BTW... could you get rid (or at least shrink) that ebay link up in this message thread... its really making the thread hard to read.

The neck board came off very easy and when I removed it I noticed that that little plastic keyway on the end of the neck was broken can that neck be repaired or replaced or do I need to buy a new monitor, I'd love to get this game fixed asap.
Thanks Guys!!

Nobody has made mention of it yet, but be EXTREMELY careful when working back there.  This is no joke.  You can die if you touch the wrong part.  The voltage contained in those monitors is insanely high.  I trust that you understand the dangers with what you're working with, but based on all the questions being asked I'm not completely sure.  We don't want someone getting zapped into oblivion here while working on a machine they love.

for me personally... I tend not to mess with anything that is cracked around the yoke... some folks are good at patching things up and I can respect the frugalness of that approach... but for me its just not worth it, I would just replace it.

Isolation transformer?  Pretty much any place that sells arcade parts, here are a few:

www.happcontrols.com

www.arcadeshop.com

http://homearcade.org/BBBB/parts.html

the BYOAC Wiki has a whole list of vendors that you may consider.

Happy Gaming!
