simple arcade speakers.
« on: January 21, 2008, 02:09:46 am »
I'm trying to decide what sort of speakers to buy for my cab.
although it may end up in the future as a jukebox for now its going to be residing in the garage and so my main concern is that I get affordable speakers that fill the garage with sound.

Can I get any suggestions?  ;D

Quality or raw loudness? Something you will fit into the cabinet or freestanding ones? If freestanding do you want a sub and small speakers or 2 big-ass ones?

Let us know the situation and then recommendations will be forthcoming.

sorry for being light on the details!
Its going to be a upright with a 27 inch monitor and I was planing on putting the speakers between the monitor and the marquee. I don't need LOUD! speakers with surround sound,
just something that does the job of emulating the arcade experince and is priced well.
I'm not sure what To get, I'm just looking for speakers that will sound at least as good as the ones in arcade.

Emulating the arcade experience will not fill the garage with sound, they are positioned so that the person at the machine will hear it well and not a lot gets to the rest of the area its in, otherwise arcades would be unbearably loud as opposed to the annoyingly loud that they are ;)

If your going for authentic arcade and are not going to be using it as a jukebox then a couple of 4" coaxial car speakers hooked to that amp I mentioned in the shielded speakers thread will be all you need.

If you are doing a jukebox then that will be woefully in-adequate and you may as well use a $20 boombox from kmart to play your tunes on. A jukebox is basically a fancy name for a kick ass stereo thats not in a car ;)

Thanks for the advice! that sounds good, It would probably be best if the neighbors could not hear sinistar screaming "RUN COWARD! and I HUNGER!"
If you could recommend a place to buy them that would be beyond awesome.

Just any car audio place will sell cheap 4" speakers - that guy on ebay has the best price I have seen on a class t amplifier thats not the sonic impact one when on sale which is hard to find now. Theres nothing to them really beside the chip and a sonic impact was my stereo system for a while till I got myself a proper stereo.

thanks for all the help, I don't really know anything about speakers but I guess your saying It does not matter.
any cheap 4 inch coaxial speaker like this: http://stores.channeladvisor.com/thedeepdiscount/items/item.aspx?itemid=2436451
would work right?
I'll make a drive out to a near by car audio shop and buy something cheap and then hook it up with the  TA2024 D-class Audio Amplifier Board your recommended.

once again thanks for the advice! I would have thought that particular brands and speaker shapes would matter more when picking out speakers!

Yeah, at the volumes you get on an arcade your not asking a lot of the speakers so even cheapies should be ok.
There is no volume on that amp so you may want to pick up a potentiometer (pot) to hook up inline, there are already loads of howtos on the forum on how to do it.
