Translucent t-molding anyone?
« on: October 04, 2007, 03:28:49 pm »
I was looking at tmolding.com and saw they have translucent t-molding, but they did not have a picture to see what it looks like.

Has anyone used this that could share a picture.

This sounds like it has all kinds of bling potential.

Actually the second I saw that he had purchased some translucent tmold I went and snatched up 30 feet of it.  Plan on using it to bling out a cab with some el wire.

I will try and get a picture of it jammed in the back of my cab with some el wire below it.

That's a damn cool idea. I've never heard of 'el' wire before I read this thread. This might be the start of something.

So I had a chance to test it out.  Looks pretty good so far but would need some tweeks.  I won't be able to really mess with this until later in the year, but el tape might also work even better.

These first two show how it looks with some blue wire behind it off and on.  As you can see it is pretty hard to make it out when they are off.  It is pretty noticable that they are wires, doesn't diffuse as well as I had hoped.

Some shots of it in red.

And lastly a shot showing what el wire is like for anyone that doesn't know.

Looks a little too translucent.

To diffuse the light, one may try to paint the rear of the stuff with white
paint.

Youd may also want to also paint the cabinet sides white too.

I think EL tape has a short life expectancy?..  and will fade in brightness
over time.  This could lead to needing to replace it later - which could be
a real pain.   Of course, you could always disable it.

Will it fit / did you try it in the slot?  The outer edges of the t-mold will probably not light up much, but the slot would hold it straight and having to shine through more plastic may make it more diffuse.  If it has to go on the face next to the slot, I agree that el-tape may be the way to go, but I'm really curious about what it would look like in the slot.

Didn't try it in the slot yet.  I did look at the el tape a little bit and I don't think you can get it in lengths long enough.

There is a high brightness el wire that might work well in the slot.  Gonna try the sample I have in the slot when I get off work.  Maybe more on diffusing it.

The cab I am planning on using this in is the one in the picture, but it needs lots of work.  I will redo all the sides to get it a nice glossy white.  Then add as many hidden light effects to turn it from just a white cab to a glowing monster that belongs in vegas.

Did a little more searching and found some that just might work.  The one in that link is way to wide, but on ebay there are a bunch of 5 foot strips that are 8mm wide.

Has anyone used or seen these?  Is the 8mm width the lit portion or the actual piece?  If it is the actual size then two strips could fit under the sides of the tmolding.

I agree that its a shame that this doesn't defuse the EL light better... and I'd like to see it under the spine.

However I'd also be interested to see if the wood underneath the T-mold is painted a bright colour (eg green, blue) does the t-molding take on a hue of the colour underneath or does it stay 'off white'... You'd want it to be visible enough that even during the day/with the lights on you could see the colour of the EL or the wood because 'off white' might not look so good on many cabs... it'd be a shame to only look good with the lights off.

Good to see you found it DM.

Now you see what I mean.
Its not much better in the spine.
Its too transparent to be back lit IMO.
