Anyone ever dealt with Game Cabinets Inc?
« on: June 11, 2007, 04:26:13 am »
The other day, I went into one of those stores that sell stuff for game rooms...you know, with all the pool tables, and bars and stuff. I saw this really dorky looking arcade cabinet in the corner so...I had to get a closer look. This thing was hideous. It had no marquee, and resembled something you might get buried in. And although it looked reasonably well put together, the stuff it was put together with looked cheap...like a foot could go through it. They wanted over 4000 for it!

When I asked them why so much, the salesman gleefully explained to me that it comes with over 4000 different arcade games on it. I looked closer and they were selling these cabinets with MAME32 loaded with a full set of roms.

I thought that was a no no. Are they allowed to sell their cabinets with all the MAME roms on there?

Struck me as being odd.

That goes against the license that MAME has.

Not just the MAME license either...

Shipping all 4000 ROMS in it also breaks copyrights for all 4000 games, minus the 2 or 3
that have been released as freeware to the world.

I can't imagine that this company isn't just a mom-pop store, right?
No big company would want to deal with the lawsuits that could come outta this.

There's a store like that here in Nebraska....Rec Room Plus i think it's called, and they also have a MAME machine loaded with roms for sale for close to $4000.00 as well.  I don't think they are a big chain store, but they have a couple locations around here.  I actually talked to the guy about it explaining to him that I believed it was illegal to sell this with the roms.  He told me "don't worry, we paid for the copyrights to these roms".  I knew he was full of BS, but I was just like 'whatever' and moved on.

Send a message about what they have along with their physical address to MAMEDev along with a few choice copyright owners and be done with it. Let them handle it.

I thought they looked familiar but nothing came up first time I looked. I remember Christian telling me he makes the panels for them. Who knows how the cabinets are made. I always thought the uprights looked clunky.

So what's the deal with these Game Cabinets Inc cabs?  They seem farily high profile to be a complete MAME ripoff with unlicensed ROMs in them (notice no Nintendo ROMs are included).  I couldn't find anything on that site about the ROM licenses.

From the bottom of their site:

Quote
Game Cabinets Inc. provides the preinstalled classic arcade games on Game Cabinets Inc. arcade machines with the original license from their respective owners. Users must agree to comply with the terms of that license. Game Cabinets Inc. makes no representation as to the legal use of any additional arcade games that users may purchase from third party vendors. Such games may not be authorized copies, and may infringe the rights of the copyright owner. It is the user’s sole responsibility to insure that any arcade games purchased or downloaded from third party vendors are not in violation of copyright law. Users expressly agree to hold Game Cabinets Inc. harmless from any claim of copyright infringement. Game Cabinets Inc. is not affiliated with any third party video game vendors.

If it doesn't explicitly say "MAME", can a complaint with MAMEDev be lodged?

Here is an email I received from them.

Quote
Dear ---,

This isn't something we can provide as some of the licensing contracts are
multiple page legal documents between our company and the licensee.

We are a reputable company and have been doing business for over 6 years. We
are also a member of the BBB.

All products purchased from us come with the original discs for all the
games included per our license and the original Window XP cd and cdkey are
all included. Everything is on the up and up.

I wish I could hand over our internal legal documents but I don't have
access to these files.

Kindly,

Hello,

I am interested in purchasing the Classicade Upright, but I am concerned
about licensing (family members in law enforcement). Is it possible for
you to provide me with a copy of the license for, example, Mortal Kombat
or Paperboy? You can remove any serial numbers or that type of specific
information if you wish.

Thanks,
---

I have thick skin, but why the slam?

I am Not a troll , just a new member on the boards (reading all I can before starting my first project), and Jenna is my ALL TIME FAV adult film star  :P. Therefore, the pun humor about joysticks without being overtly crude. (shes playing the cocktail cab if you scroll down on the main page)

I must say that I am very impressed by the amount of knowledge, and the sharing of tips, tricks, hints, and help, that is provided to new members by existing members of this board who have already traveled down this unique road to gaming nirvana.

I noticed these guys were local to me...about 2 miles away. So, I wrote them an email about some parts I needed and they said I could come down and pick em up. While I was there, I was pleasantly surprised....These are some good guys. While I was there I asked them about the cabinet I saw and they said they do not ship with MAME, just their licensed games. The shop must have added them. The guy I spoke with chatted for awhile about cabinets and all the cool stuff out there and told me anytime I needed parts to just give them a call or stop by. Although I may not be a huge fan of their cabinet designs, their customer service is great. They really went out of the way to help me out and were friendly while doing it too. We chatted for about 20 minutes, and never once did the guy make me feel like I was imposing. I would definitely do business with them again.

Males...or maybe I should say 'men!'. (I'm wondering when, perhaps, one of these days I might be pm'd by one of these females, of whatever age, that saint thinks visit, or at least wishes will be comfortable visiting, here with a message something to the effect of 'hey, I'm glad not all guys are sexist prigs'. Of course, as long as I don't mention anything about make-up being inherently bad, etc, I'll probly come off on top.)

Well... let me tell you, if they can provide a license for MK2, I'd be impressed. The fact is they don't (see my post above.

Also, a page on their site (http://www.gamecabinetsinc.com/login.shtml password='roms') clearly lists MAME roms for purchase from other sites. Also, how on earth are they going to ship a cabinet with only their licensed games (which include all the Mortal Kombats) and not run them? Do they have dozens of boards in there or their own custom emulators?

I bet they are probably the Midway arcade treasures collections. Any one can buy em, and here is a list of games....lets see if it matches up with what they offer...

Badlands™
Hydro Thunder®
Off Road Thunder: Mud, Sweat 'N Gears™
Race Drivin'®
San Francisco Rush The Rock: Alcatraz Edition™
San Francisco Rush 2049™
S.T.U.N. Runner™
Super Off Road™ & Bonus Tracks Pack
· A.P.B.
· Arch Rivals
· Championship Sprint
· Cyberball 2072
· Gauntlet 2
· Hard Drivin’
· Kozmik Krooz’r
· Mortal Kombat® 3
· Mortal Kombat® II
· NARC
· Pit Fighter
· Primal Rage
· Rampage World Tour
· Spy Hunter® 2
· Timber
· Total Carnage
· Wacko
· Wizard of Wor
· Xenophobe®
· Xybots™
SpyHunter
Defender II
Gauntlet
Joust
Paperboy(R)
Rampage(R)
Marble Madness(R)
Robotron: 2084(R)
Smash TV(TM)
Joust 2
Rampart(R)
Blaster(R)
Sinistar(R)
Super Sprint(TM)
720°(R)
Toobin’(R)
KLAX(R)
SPLAT!(TM)
Satan’s Hollow(TM)
Vindicators(TM)
Bubbles(R)
RoadBlasters(TM)

Sorry for the odd formating, this came from Midway's site directly....I know there are also similiar collections for Taito and Atari....so it isn't a stretch.....

Interesting about the roms for sale thing....very interesting....would seem that sending someone to a site that you can obtain these games would kind of break the license agreement, or at least cause some hardship between the two. I don't know man...it's a weird one. On one side, I looked at the list above against the list they provide on their site, and except for a few other games, they are almost identical. So that tells me they are most likely just including those collections with their cabinets (and remember in their response to you, he said "All the original disks for the games are included"), which also means they are full of it when they say they have a license. Then the flip side is why have a link to MAME burners? Just doesn't add up....

Yup, the lists are similar... but I thought that the Arcade Treasures stuff was for consoles...

Granted, something doesn't add up.

I think what's happening is they have downloaded all the MAME roms for all the games in all the Treasures collections and purchased the Treasures (e.g. PS2 version). So, they spend $100 or so on the Treasures and think that entitles them to the actual arcade ROMS for distribution with MAME.

Right. That's what I think of first in a case like this. Not consoles. Maybe they buy one then make copies. Mame on the floor model is for convenience.

I sent an email to mamedevs.

I really didn't want to, as I really wanted these guys to be on the level considering my interaction with them earlier this week.

There is just way too many things that raise an eyebrow.

I was curious about the obviously retitled "Arcade Pinball".  I compared the shots against those at AJ's VPinMame archive.  No surprise, they're selling VPinMame and the tables as well.
