First cab! Jungle King - Attempt to repair
« on: March 07, 2007, 08:50:29 pm »
I picked this up locally for $60.  The previous owner had tried to repair it unsuccessfully, and was moving out of the country.

First thing I noticed was that the power supply was missing.  D'oh.  Found one on eBay for $20, so I figured it's worth a try even if I decide to Mame it.

More on that note...My wife won't even let me keep this game - there's just no room.    I intended to make this a Mame cabinet for my sister's vacation house (which I just happen to like to spend weekends at.)  The cabinet has to fit in the Grand Cherokee, which this one just barely did.  I like that the monitor is more horizontal cause it will probably be mostly used for Golden Tee, and it lowers the chances of breaking your hand.

I'd like to cram two joysticks in, which I know will be a squeeze, but there is a thread on small CP's that makes me think it's do-able.

Anyway, I guess the project is on hold until I get the power supply.

Cheers!

Nice score for $60

Cabinet looks like it is in good condition.  Good luck what ever you decide to do with it.

This is so worth restoring....looks completely intact on the outside....

I would never MAME it. Especialy since it's a Jungle KING and not a Jungle Hunt

It is a really nice cab... Jungle King was one of my favorites.

If you get the original game going, that would be swell.

If you are dying to MAME it, I would say save the original control panel, then either build a new CP, or get a junky CP from Ebay and configure it with what ever controls you want.

Also, it would be nice to keep the original artwork intact...Especially the Marquee and bezel... maybe touch up the sides since you would only need 2 shades of green for it, looks like a pretty simple operation...

Good luck

There is a NOS cpo on Ebay right now. You could get that thing looking really nice. I don't think you should Mame that, it is in pretty good shape.

I can't see the pic (image placeholder says the site is having maintenance performed on it).

If you're considering MAME-ing it, and it's a Jungle KING, I'd bring you a MAME-able cabinet and cash in exchange for it.  Where are you located?

Hopefully the pics are working now...they work for me.

Anyway, I'm located in Washington DC (not really the center of the arcade world).

There seems to be a good amount of interest in seeing this restored, so once I get the power supply, I'll make a good faith attempt to get it running and see if anyone wants to buy it.  Like I said, my goal was to make a Mame cabinet for my sister and brother in law.

That being said, if I were to Mame it, I would keep the look and feel of Jungle King and just replace the CP.  The idea would be to make it easily returnable to it's Jungle King, copyright infringing glory.

The green sideart is really nice, and the orange one isn't bad either. Unfortunately both the Taito's are in rough shape, lots of holes/scratches and some corners rotted off. Have to say I'm really not a fan of the bolt heads all over the place either. Not sure why they chose to assemble these cabinets that way.

That's actually a Ms Pac with the Sword in it. The maze burn-in on the monitor is so bad you can barely play it anyway. Don't know why they bothered butchering it. It'll be a Ms Pac again someday soon.  :)

At first I thought two people had just bought a jungle king cab (there was a discussion in the main forum) and then I realized they're both you, Grundle! It's obviously up to you to decide what to do, but I'll just beg one last time to keep it as j.k.   ;D

If you were looking to sell it, how much?

prOK sells Taito Sideart in stencil format, based off of my old Arcade Art Library sideart files (he made a few accuracy corrections).... used to include the front art.. not sure anymore!

Replacement power supply is here.  After lots of testing (I didn't just plug it in and hope for the best...I do this kind of stuff for a living), plugged it in and I get red LED's for +5, -5 and -12.  +12 is not working.  Measuring the voltages at the pins I found the same (except for -12, which seems not to be used, is this correct?)

Fuses are good, so I'll have to investigate further.

Maybe I should have forked out the money for the switcher...

Kneivel:  What are your plans for the Taito cabinets?  I'd love to see what you're going to do.

(Edited for a grammatical mistake that is actually a pet peeve of mine - your -> you're.)

-gut the insides and clean them up

-remove all the bolts and glue/screw the cabinets together

-fill all the holes and repair the damaged areas

-laminate the sides/fronts/tops with black laminate, install new t-mold

-make new back doors from 1/2" MDF (they are trashed)

-build new CP's from 3/4" MDF, which will have 2 joys and a trackball

-new CP art, marquees, and sideart

-install PC speakers, 22" PC monitors, 1ghz Dell PC's

Grundle, if you have any old computer power supplies laying around (AT style), you can use one of those instead of an arcade power supply. Try it out. That thing will bring you $300 or $400 working, which is enough to pretty much finance a similar cabinet completely.

A lot of people do the "reversable" Mame cabinet thing, but the thing is that none of those cabinets will likely ever get reversed.

Or even if you don't want to mess with it, I promise you that there are probably a dozen local collectors who would bring you a conversion cabinet and a $100 bill for that thing.
Acceptance of Zen philosophy is marred slightly by the nagging thought that if all things are interconnected, then all things must be in some way involved with Pauly Shore.

Computer power supply is a good idea, but I don't want to hack the wiring harness, since it's completely intact.

Okay.  So I got the power supply working.  One of the regulators had been removed.  Luckily, since the part is over 20 years old, it was only $0.53.  Plus shipping of course.

Anyway, 12V worked perfectly after soldering in the regulator.  The 5V light came on when powered up, but turned off shortly after (before I could measure.)  I assumed it was going over 5.8V and into shutdown, so I turned the adjustment pot way down.  Success!  Hooked up the meter and adjusted it to 5.05V.  Not sure how to adjust the current though.

I wouldn't be writing this if it was all working though.  I would be playing Jungle King.  Nothing happens now that everything is plugged in and getting voltage.  Bummer.

Any ideas?  Otherwise, Drew - what are my options for mame-able cabs?

Speaker is hooked up.  I can hear the sound of amplified nothing (and a crackle when it turns on.)  I tried hitting the coin switches and didn't hear anything.  I didn't mess with the volume knobs or anything.

Monitor crackles to life...makes me very nervous.

I'm beginning to think it might not be an easy fix.

Rikitiki:  How could I scan this bezel?  My scanner can't take the whole thing at once...I guess I could photoshop the pieces together, but it seems like there's a better way.

It was a fight, but I got the old machine running.  I had to hook up an old computer PS to it...I was making no progress on the old massive linear PS.  I don't know how people used those.

Anyway, I ended up just stripping the wires and tinning them and pushing them into the connector.  Worked great and no cutting of the harness.

Anyone know where to get new bulbs for the lighted coin door?  I guess I could rig up some LED's from work, but new bulbs would be easier.

Thanks for all the help along the way...

So, I just have some minor clean up of the wiring and some fnishing touches.  First $300 takes it.  (No shipping, pick up in DC.)  Money will go to finance my MAME project...

Nice to see someone is saving these original cabinets. :D

Got my coin door bulbs from Radio Shack but any auto supply place should have them.
Take an old bulb with you to help match it up. ;)
