7 button layout

Does anybody actually use a 7 button per player layout?
I can't decide between a 6 or 7 button layout.

I like fighter games, but i don't think i've ever come across a game requires a 7 button layout.
Is there a list of games(maybe searchable by layout?) out there somewhere?

There are no games that I know of that use 7 buttons.  There are seven buttons so that you can play neo geo games as they were meant to be played.

That button also works well for the Run button in Mortal Kombat III

I did a 7 button layout for Neo-Geo and Street Fighter games - I never use it. My recommendation is go with a 6 button layout. Easier and cheaper...

Do you play Defender with that layout? Or MK3?

Defender is iffy, but it's perfect for MK3. I agree with Havok, as long as your not planning on a lot of MK3.

If you are going to put emulators on your cabinet other than Mame, then you might want an additional button to use .... perhaps.

I personally never played many Neo Geo fighting games. Those are the only Neo Geo games where I think original button placement is critical. Otherwise, you can probably get away with just using them as they are in a 6-button layout.

I've considered going the 7-button route, but I've played on what I guess were cab conversions where the operator went against the norm and put the four buttons in a block pattern.  It actually worked out fairly well, and would work fine on a 6-button layout.

That's what happens when operators get lazy. They cover up two holes from their SF layout control panel and just make it into a Neo Geo machine.

I woke up one morning with a serious NEED to play UMK III!
Isearched every where in town for one on ANY platform and none were to be had.
I even called friends that i knew had it and no luck, they sold'em.

So, here i am almost three later

Well, you answered your own question... MK III needs that 7th button down there to feel right.

You could easily play the MK3 games with 6 buttons.  You just need to learn the game with a new layout.

Try that six button layout.  It works fine.

a number of games use two buttons in a line for forefinger and middle finger, with a thumb button down and to the left, e.g. Asteroids, Asteroids Deluxe, Blasteroids, Defender, Gravitar, Space Duel.

I also play in UMK3. This was it been possible to reconcile from Neogeo and SF.

If the 7-button bank is intended for the right hand with a stick in the left hand for Defender/Stargate, don't forget the Invisio button on Stargate which is one more button than Defender. Depending on how you arrange your 7 buttons, the button bank can be perfect for Stargate (and Defender as well, just don't use the 7th button).

Also, as someone already mentioned I think, if the button bank is set close enough to the stick that you can hit the 7th button with your LEFT thumb (using your stick hand), then that can be Defender's reverse button. But then you still need the proper number of buttons in your right hand, including that 7th one, perhaps using the right side (Player 2) button bank, for Stargate.

I wonder if what I just typed makes any sense... :) It's hard to describe control panel layouts in words.
