I-Pac Button Problem Solved
« on: November 12, 2006, 05:42:01 pm »
Hooking up my controls today, and having some problems with the "Coin 1" button. After trying several different switches, only one of them appears to work to activate the Coin 1 button. The switches work for their other assigned functions, but not for "Coin 1."I don't think it's a bum I-Pac because I did fine one switch that works to activate the Coin 1 button. And I don't think all of the switches are bad because they work for other functions.

Any ideas?

I'm not seeing a problem... If you have one that works, what more do you need? I don't have an explanation for the behavior, but it doesn't sound like it's preventing you from getting everything working.

Strange problems usually end up being a grounding issue, I would suggest the switches working or not is more coincidence???  Perhaps check your wiring, and if you're daisychaining your ground, make sure you don't have any faulty or intermittent contacts (a multimeter set to continuity indication would be perfect for this).

I will check the ground. I did try new wiring, but with the same ground. All of the buttons are on the same ground. The coin for player one is the first one in the chain, so that could be it. I'll have to get a multimeter and check it out.

The reason I want a player one coin is two-fold. It's a cocktail table, so when I'm playing one-player, it's annoying to reach over and hit the coin button. Secondly, some games, like Guantlet, require each player to have their own coin button to get credit.

Did you run a ground loop? I am guessing this is what you were implying, but just wanted to clarify. Could help in troubleshooting.

If you mean a daisy chain, then yes. Each control item is on the same ground going to the I-Pac.

Hey All,

It did end up being the ground. I borrowed a multimeter from work and the groundwas not connecting. Changed the wiring and I'm all good. Strange, since I'm using braided, but whatever. It works.

And thank you all for your help!  :notworthy:
