I'm down with the GHII
If there's bees in the trap I'm catching em
By the thorax and abdomen
And sanding the stingers down to a rough quill
Then I dip em in ink, and I scribble a bit
But if it they wriggle then I tickle em until they hold still
Lemme say it again
In my land of pretend
I use bees as a mf'n pen

I don't have a PS2.  GH is one of about five games I hope to one day catch up on with a PS3, but that's a few years off when the system dips below $200.

I'm under a self-imposed moratorium on "toy" purchases until after Christmas.  I have a bad habit of going on shopping sprees for myself during the holidays.

"One gift for Grandma, one gift for me.  One gift for my wife, one gift for me..."

I'll have it by December 25th, one way or another.  ;D

However, I've been playing the demo for about a week.  Nice to finally have some new songs.

I don't have a PS2 either but this game does intrigue me.  There used to be a totally ---smurfing--- kickass little freeplay (admission fee only) Bemani arcade a couple of minutes from where I work... they had like $50,000 in Bemani style cabs all in one tiny location for a $20 admission fee.  I used to play Guitar Freaks there quite a bit.

Found the site for wherever it is now... wonder if it's still an admission fee only.

Did you get a bonus with the pre order?  I saw that Best Buy (?) was offering a GH beanie and a skin for the guitar with purchase of the game/controller package.

If you want to try the game out I have seen it on display at every walmart, target, and best buy in this area.  If you have some type of gaming store around you maybe they have a demo of it running.

I am pretty familiar with the gameplay... can't be very different at all from Guitar Freaks.  Not worth it to me to buy a PS2 strictly for this, though, so if I ever find a cheap enough PS2 I'll put some feelers out for this game.

No, but I was already in the store and know this game will be sold out pretty quick when it comes out, so I figured might as well preorder.  I would of thrown a GH beanie and a skin for the guitar in the trash anyways.

Right, I'm not saying go out an buy it, just saying how you can try it out first.

It is like guitar freaks but better presentation and more refined.

Guitar Freaks was definitely hard to navigate given that those cabs were all in Japanese with Japanese songs.   :laugh2:

I love Guitar Hero. I wasn't nearly as impressed with guitar freaks. I've got Gutiar Hero 2 on my Christmas wishlist, but I won't be buying for myself any time soon. I'm a little short on money at the moment.

Like Skank said to T-Bird, "I'm awwn it."

Some of the tracks look awesome but I dunno if it tops the first
one...  Free Bird! ha!

All the Guitar Freaks machines I've seen have been trashed
and non-working. One even had a guitar yanked off.  :(

I'm going to pick up a copy today.  I've been so psyched about GH2 that I've been playing GH1 for several hours each night lately.  I've actually started getting callouses (sp?) on my fingers from playing.  Which is pretty sad, since my actual guitar string callouses have pretty much disappeared. :)

FYI:

I just picked up a copy at Circuit City.  And they had the beanie, but no guitar skin.  The cashier at my location offered to special order the skin for me, or give me a $10 gift card.  I took the gift card, of course.

She said none of the CC locations got the skins in today.  So this might work out for some of you too.

As I said, I didn't any bonus with the preorder, so I won't be getting a beanie or skin regardless.

I've been playing GH2 for a couple hours now and it seems they've increased the difficulty a bit.  I got quite good at the first GH (5 stars on all but 6 songs on extreme, including independent tracks) so I was afraid this one would be too easy, I'm glad I was wrong.  I decided to play through hard mode first, and they seem to be a fair amount more difficult then GH hard mode.  I'm curious how crazy the later songs get on extreme mode.

So far I have been having a lot of fun with it, its basically the same game as the first one, except with new songs and a couple of minor tweaks here and there (I haven't trying multiplayer, but thats where the biggest changes are supposed to be), which was to be expected from this type of game.  I think the encores are a nice addition, even if it really is just cosmetic.  I was a huge fan of the first game, so this is pretty much exactly what I wanted.  Great game.  Also, I didn't realize it had a Strongbad song in the extras section, good stuff.

oh  man, i'm loving this game.  i went to the BB and of course, they didn't have the game by itself.  They said that their shipment was lost somewhere...but you can go ahead and purchase the game and guitar.  i already have two guitars, so why spend extra money.  but the gamestop in the same bigbox area had one left.  kickass.  my friend and i were totally rocking out to this game.  good times.  i'm very impressed with the song selection.  good stuff.

oh yeah, while i was at the BB, they were popping a GH2 tournament this saturday.  i should be interesting.  i think i'll check it out.  i haven't really been benchmarked except for one time at fry's in SJ.  but it'll be cool i guess.
this bozo thinks, so therefore he definitely is a bozo

Picked up the game last night and played it for 3 hours on hard.  Got mainly 3 stars on hard songs and the 3 note chords are tough especially when your not expecting it.  But its great fun... Only thing that sucks is the rating bar left a bit of a screen burn on my new tv.

The multiplayer mode is awesome.  Especially since one person can play lead guitar and the other can play bass.  And in some cases the bass guitar is harder then the lead guitar.

I preordered mine a EBGames a few weeks ago and picked it up yesterday.

I hadn't played the first one, so this was a new experience for me.

Pretty neat concept and game, it will take a ton of practice for me to get any good at it though... doesn't seem like my fingers are as dexterous as I thought they were!

My PS2 has been dead for over a year, and GH was the only thing making me consider fixing it. Now I see the track list for GHII and I'm really sorry I didn't. Still I can't see throwing down the cash required for both the repair and GH, as there is truly nothing else on the PS2 that interests me of late.

Here's hoping Red Octane throws some GH love twards the Wii. They haven't come out and said they would, but a few interviews with their developers indicates, it's not off the table either. (hope hope hope)

The woman and I are playing it now.  So far I'm kinda bored because we're starting on easy and working the way up but the new list of tracks is pretty good so far.

One thing I know for sure that I don't like about GHII so far is the shaking of the fretboard when you miss a note.  I can see that being a P.I.T.A. on harder levels...

Ya, I remember on the first guitar hero I only played maybe half of the easy songs before getting bored and jumping to medium.  I started with hard mode for GH2, so I didn't have that problem this time around  ;D

I actually like the fret board shaking thing, it doesn't happen everytime you miss a note, just if you miss a note when you have a long streak going.  I'm about 10 songs into extreme mode and it actually helps to let you know when you screwed up a note because you don't want to take your eyes off the board to check the counter.

Well I finally came to a song that kicks ---my bottom--- and will take some practice to beat.  The song is Freya on extreme mode and it is incredibly difficult.

Also, if anyone beats all the songs on easy or medium mode, could you let me know if it unlocks any gameplay modes.  When I beat hard it unlocked another multiplayer mode, so I want to make sure I'm not missing part of the game by not playing the easier modes.

I think I need to restrict my play of this game to weekends only since I didn't get much work done today,  but luckily we're at the start of a weekend  ;D   I now only have 3 songs on extreme left (excluding the bonus tracks).  Let me just say that Misirlou is by far the hardest song I've ever played.  I've replayed it around 10 times and I still can't get past 37% complete.  I also have Hangar 18 before Freebird is unlocked, but I'm pretty sure I can beat it in another try or two, and Freebird shouldn't be too hard, just long.  This means Misirlou is pretty much the only thing standing between me and finishing the game, but it may take a while to beat it.  Maybe its time to try out the new practice mode and slow down the song so I can figure out how to beat it.

Is anyone else even close to where I am in the game?  or am I just playing way too much for my own good?  I think the answer to the second question is yes no matter what.

Now that I'm officially having a conversation with myself, I just thought I'd let me know that I beat all the songs on extreme level :)  (except bonus tracks) and unlocked the battle axe.  Practice mode was very helpful for beating misirlou because I was able to just play the small section that was killing me every time over and over until I finally got to the point where I could hit half the notes, which is all I needed with star power activated at that point.

I'll be taking a break from the game for maybe a day and let me hand rest, then I'll start trying to get 5 stars on each song  ;D  And no, I will probably never get 5 stars on all the extreme songs.

Beating easy gives you a guitar in the shop that looks like a fish.

Just beat it on medium, unlocks a coffin shaped guitar.  Also unlocked a multiplayer mode (head to head or something).

Probably old news, but all 5 stars on Medium gives a guitar shaped like a viking head with a sword stuck in it.

Very cool, since it unlocks a multiplayer mode I started playing through medium difficulty.  I'm almost 1/2 way through and should get two guitars and new mode after I beat it.  I'm only playing a few songs of medium at a time, while trying to get 5 stars on all the hard songs (only have the 10 hardest songs left to get 5 on), so it make take a while.  Its possible its the same multi mode that unlocked when I beat hard mode, so I may end up only getting the guitars, but its still fun playing the easier songs.

What is a "new guitar" in this context?

"New guitar" in this context is an additional guitar model available for purchase from the store.

Multiplayer mode unlocked by beating Medium is the "Pro Face Off" I believe it's called - same as normal face off, but both players play everything.  Assume it's the same multi mode unlocked by beating hard, but will be pleasantly surprised if you say otherwise.

Does it give you some new ability in the game or is it just visual?

I just recently got the 5 stars on all medium.  The new guitar is neat.

There are some pretty tough songs on there, even on medium.  On some of the hard level songs, I can only get 3 stars on the first shot.  Looks like those will take a bit more practice.

I'm not sure if I'll ever end up toying with the expert level... those are just ridiculous.

FYI -- Looks like they are going to be releasing a new wireless guitar controller.  I'll probably pick one up for myself and have the other one handy for co-op and versus play.
Reality is overrated.

That's just one of several wireless guitars I've seen. You might wanna check around before you decide on one.

On another note, I finally got to play Guitar Hero 2 while I was camping out to get the PS3. I love that game! I have the first one, and I'm ready for the next. It has a lot more songs I'm familiar with.

I think the songs really are harder this time around, too. Maybe it's because they figure people are already good from the first one. Most of the Guitar Hero fans I've talked to already had the first.
