Home Made Arachnid Galaxy Dart Board - Finished 6/10/07
« on: May 04, 2007, 08:10:13 pm »
I am going to start building my Galaxy dart board in about two weeks and I should have it done with in a month.  The sad news is my cocktail table still isn't done, still need the monitor.  The dartboard won't take that long since I already have everything I need, just need to make the cabinet and wire everything up.  Will post picks and update when I start.

Just a quick update......I got most of the wood cut today, need to clean up some cuts to make them a bit more even but that's not a big deal.  Should be done within a month.

I thought about doing this because I have a dart board I never use and a full sized bar type dartboard would look nice next to my games.  Well maybe not next to the games because I suck at darts. ;D

Another quick update, I should have this finished in two weeks.  I have everything cut except for the TV screen cut out.  I am doing a test fit and some sanding tonight so I will take some pictures of it and upload them tonight or tomorrow.

First off, how about some progress pics?

Secondly, how will this bad-boy work? Original equipment in a new box? Custom software? :dunno

I will take some pics of the cut wood but it's not very exciting, just cut wood and I will have pics of it together when I do my test fit.  It is original equipment, I bought almost everything on ebay except the darthead assembly.  The game board and power supply game from eBay and I am using a small 14" TV for the screen.

Here are a couple pics of my test fit.  It would go together much easier if I could cut straight.  As with everything  I build its off by a 1/4 inch total and that is fine with me.  I will have more in a couple days.  I did get the hole cut for the TV but I didn't take any pics of that yet.  I will try to post some more pics on Thursday.

oh, I modified the original Galaxy dimensions a little but you get the idea.

Has anyone ever built a dart board before?

Hello Squirrellydw,
what kind of dartboard are you using?  What are the size of the board, material? You seem to want to use a TV to display the scores??
Is is something like my Halex Phantom?

We want more details  ???

The wood is 3/4 MDF if that's what you want to know.  As for the dart board it is all Arachnid Galaxy parts I got on eBay and through Betson.  It is NOT like your dart board.  The whole thing is going to cost about $400 and would have been around $300 if  i would have been more patient and bought everything on ebay.   I will post pics of the parts when I build it.

Is this one of the Halex boards that will use real or soft-tip darts? If so, are you having problems with its scoring? I got one as a  housewarming gift a few years ago, and it was a total piece of crap. I exchanged it thinking it was defective, and the replacement was just as bad. Mine looked similar to yours, but had metal "contact" buttons for the functions and a plastic case around it that stored the darts. It was over 200 bucks, and the second one wound up in the trash.

I'm in the market for another dart board, but I'm extremely biased against Halex. It would have to be absolutely perfect for me to buy another one.

PS: Sorry to post off-topic in your thread squirrely! The cabinet looks fantastic.

Agreed, it looks great!  Would you consider posting your measurements/plans for the cabinet?  It looks fairly straightforward even for a novice woodworker (i.e. me) -- would that be true?

I will try to post my measurements and yes it is pretty easy and I still can't cut a straight line even with a saw guide.  Back to work on it.

It's finished except one little thing.  I need to make a frame or something to go around the plexi glass on the front to finish it off and make it look nicer.  That shouldn't be to hard and then I will screw it in from the back so you can see the screws.  So what do you think?

Nice project.  Maybe it would be cool if you got a amber colored overlay for the monitor so it looked more like the original monitor...  Not sure where to get that, though.

Nice project!

1) What kind of monitor is that?
2) How does the monitor connect to the interface board?

Looks good! do you plan on putting some kind of graphics on the front and\or sides?

How about lights on the dartboard itself? Normally, there is one above and one on the left and right of the board..

I am using a TV for the monitor, 14 inch and it connects by a RCA plug.

Graphics will be done later some time, not sure what yet.  I don't need need lights because there is one in the ceiling right above it.

It's about a half inch to high, I can live with it :)

Just read an article on Arachnid and realized how true to the real thing your dart board is.  I had never seen one before so had no frame of reference.  Some interesting facts from the article.  First coin op Dart Board 1976. Number of Employees 75. Dart Boards and kits produced annually 140,000.

Great work squirrellydw. :applaud:

Very nice project!  How did you wire the tv to the board?  I have an arachnid dartboard that the 7" monochrome monitor is out.  Could you help guide me a little as to how I could hook that up to a regular tv?  The entire machine works except for the monitor.

Thanks,
Ben
