Project Quaterback
« on: September 18, 2011, 11:36:34 pm »
I have started creating a new MAME project..my first MAME project.

I started with a quarterback machine.

More info here---> http://www.arcade-museum.com/game_detail.php?game_id=9191

I got the game because of the 25" vertical monitor. My plan it to gut the machine and install a JAMMA harness and use a JPAC to connect it to my computer. The cabinet it in rough shape as it must have been sitting in 4" of water at one point. The whole bottom of the game is bloated and rotted out.

So, the first step, after gutting the cab, was to start stripping the paint.

Now you can really see the water damage...

And here is the first side fully stripped and sanded....

I had also removed some bolts that were installed from the inside of the cabinet. Instead, I countersunk some screws and I will patch up the holes.

I didn't want those bolt heads visible from the outside so this was a good option to add extra support that is needed to hold the large monitor.

More to come later this week...

Good luck on the project.
Will you be fully redoing the bottom sections in order to remove the water damage. There is a lot of info regarding this online and will probably be your best bet.
I do hope you plan on keeping it with the vertical monitor. That will be a great looking cabinet and will be awesome for the classic verticals such as Pacman, Frogger and Galaga as well as plenty of shmups.
Good luck, keep up the good work.

That water damage isn't too high. What I would do is cut it out, replace it, and then use some type of kickplate around the bottom. Some diamond plate would look nice.

Thanks guys! I do plan on keeping it vertical. I bought this game for just that reason. I will make a scratch build cabinet for my horizontal MAME.

I will wait to strip the whole cabinet before I make a final decision. I think I will make a new bottom and place it above the water damage and cut the water damaged area out. Effectively shorting the cabinet by 4 inches. I think this is the easiest and best way to repair the cabinet. I plan on putting this game on casters so it should almost make up for the loss in height. I plan to play sitting down most of the time while playing so it shouldn’t matter anyway.

I agree with Leapinlew, cut out the damaged area, bassically like shown in this thread:
http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?topic=49927.0
Then if you don't wanna do all the bondo feathering and what not, just install the kick plate all the way around

And definitely extra points to you for going vertical  :applaud:

Well that won’t work for this one I’m afraid  :(. All 4 sides are toast and the bottom too. I think if it was one side, or maybe two, I could use that trick. If I was to do that on this cabinet, I would remove all of the structure.

Well, I decided not to cut the bottom off. Instead, I used the ol' standby..Bondo. Below is an image of one of the corners that looked really bad. It wasn't the worst corner tho-. I think it was about the 3rd worst

Below is the one side fixed.

That was after 1 1/2 can of bondo.

I also started work on the over all appearance of the cabinet. I was going to make it some kind of "Classic Arcade" with classic images all around it. Instead, I thought I would go with something totally not classic. Here is the marquee.

I am thinking about adding white formica. below is a rough mock up image.

I hope to have the cabinet totally repaired by next week. More images then :)

Thanks man...  You’re a graphics guy, I want to put some sort of a ghosted grid/hex pattern in the blue gradient. Do you have any source that has some cool grids I could play with?  Maybe on that is non-uniform. Maybe getting larger/smaller from right to left or maybe flowing like a waving flag…. Any Ideas?

What do guys think about to theme? I know it's not traditional but I think it might look really cool. I was inspired by this non traditional guitar.

I like the theme, myself. I like stripes on a cab, and I like the dark blue.

Thanks guys.. I was thinking of using White Laminate for the sides.
