Trackball installation with Optipac - Help an idiot out!
« on: July 15, 2006, 09:20:42 pm »
OK, I finally mounted the optipac inside my cab and I'm ready to wire up the trackball.  I am using the player 1 port that connects to a Pins -> USB wire (that came with the optipac) that will plug into one of the USB ports on my computer.

Anyway, I have a 2-1/4" trackball and there are TWO sets of Red, Black, Green and Yellow wires coming out of the trackball (one set of 4 wires contains each color).  If I am looking down at the trackball, a set of wires is at "12 o'clock" and a set of wires is at "9 o'clock" - How should I wire the trackball to the Optipac?  I looked here http://www.ultimarc.com/optipac3.html but it wasn't clear because I'm an idiot (hence the thread title).

Any help would be great... also, what's a good game to test it out on?

THANKS!!

It's easy and you can do it.  :)

There is one cable per axis. Plug both in and go into Windows (if you are using Windows).  Spin the ball.  If you spin right and the cursor moves right, then you hooked them up correctly.  If it moves left, switch 'em.

From Andy's site:
Quote
Connecting the Ultimarc/STC 2-1/4 inch trackball
This is supplied with connecting cables. There is one cable per axis. The location of the two plugs is described in the table looking from the top.
Set the jumper to "A/LO". The GND and +5V from both plugs go to the same GND and +5V connections on the Opti-PAC.
Plug at "12 o'clock" position    Plug at "9 o'clock" position
Black    Red    Yellow    Green    Black    Red    Yellow    Green
GND    +5V    Y1    Y2    GND    +5V    X2    X1

Correcting Reverse Movement.
Depending on the orientation of the trackball the horizontal and vertical movement may be reversed.
If the horizontal and vertical axes are reversed, swap the "X" wire connections with the "Y" connections.
If either of the horizontal or vertical movements are backwards, swap the X1 wire with X2 or swap Y1 with Y2 as appropriate.

Got it thanks.  I must have the trackball installed sideways and upside down... the yellow and green wires needed switched from X to Y and 1 to 2.  It's working now... I'm almost there... just have the monitor mount to do today... and then probably a lot of tweaking the software but it should be "done" at that point.  This is going to be tough though...
