Marquee Question
« on: June 27, 2006, 08:17:03 pm »
At the last auction a purchased a non-discript Nintendo cabinet with the intention of converting it into a Donkey Kong.  It is / was set up as a conversion space game.  When I turned the marquee around it turned out to be a Donkey Kong marquee.  Now this is my first cabinet fixer-upper so I am not familiar with an authentic marquee.  My current cabinet was built from scratch so the marquee was printed out and sandwiched between two pieces of plexi.  This marquee seems to have a black paint on the backside.  If I hold it up to a lightbulb no light shines through.  I assume this black paint (or whatever it is) was put their by whoever did the conversion.  I tried to lightly scratch it off the corner where it will now show through the marquee holder and it scratched all the way through the actual Donkey Kong artwork.  My question is does any one have any recommendations on trying to remove the black without damaging the original artwork underneath.  I have seen threads in the past on here dealing with removing paint on the cabinet sides while protecting the artwork beneath but could not find any info on doing this with marquee plexi.  Any help would be appreciated.

In addition if I hold the black side up to the light at an angle I can see the outlines of the Donkey Kong artwork showing through (no colors, just an imprint look), almost lightly raised above the rest of the surface.

I think a new marquee will be the only solution...

I've never come across a situation like this, but I can say for certain -- do not scratch. Marquee artwork is typically far more delicate than sideart.

I might try some of the lightest stripping chemical I could find, but I would wait a bit to see if anybody else chimes in with a better idea. Even touching up a clean marquee is difficult. Cleaning up the mes you inherited may not be possible.

For sure, go real slow.

Cheers.

Yea, I'm prepared for that possibility.  Just figured I'd ask incase someone here came across this themselves.  It would just suck to have an original marquee and not be able to use it.  I could always use it as decoration in the game room if need be because its in very good shape otherwise (ironically the black paint or whatever it is probably helped to preserve / protect it).
