Was wondering that myself.  how can he possible track a ip address unless saint gave it to him or he got email from the guy directly.  That being said, I've had good
dealing with KenMelk so I have no reason to doubt him.

OK just to clarify we did not use this forum to track his IP, we used EBAY as it had more information reguarding him.  2, Saint and all others, we do not need anything released from anyone to trace an ip, i know you all think that we do however we can track anyones ip via the net with nothing more then a click of a mouse.  And to Saint, i think in the next week you will be contacted about this, if not by me (and i will show you proof and idenity that i am a law enforcement officer) then by another in my office.  I do thank you for your stance on not releaseing any info, that is the way it should be, but like i said to be very honest, we could trace ANYONES IP address.  That being said i want to be clear that we DO NOT again DO NOT do such things unless there is a reason, and HARPAL had given a reason. 

Now to keep you all up to date, we have his name, his address, and his phone numbers, and there is a pending case of fraud and grand theft on him now.  If you lost money you MAY be able to recover it, however if you lost stuff on trade, that MAY not be recoverable.  I urge anyone who paid via paypal to file a complaint and ry to get your money that way.

Anyway as for what i am trained in, it does not matter this is a thread about HARPAL screwing people over not me, like i said i even HATE to mention where i work, i just wanted to let people know that i do have the ability to get things done.  So please lets get back to HARPAL.

It's things like this that make you lose creditability with me. Coming from a technical IT background I know this statement to be false. Or at best, highly exaggerated. For the following reasons:

Dialup users receive a different IP upon each connection. If you traced the IP back "with a few clicks" you would find the company who registered that IP's address. Forcing you to deal with that ISP. AOL users work under this setup.

Some networks are built behind firewalls and proxies that take advantage of NAT/PAT to serve more customers then they have IP's. Some networks have no choice but to use a private IP address to allow the routing of their customers packets to a central location. Rural wireless and some satellite internet works this way.

Lastly, some countries come from a pool of IP's. It would be impossible to track down these IP's into another country, especially a communist country like China.

If you were to be from the FBI, I would think a background check of Harpal before you purchased anything from him would've been a prudent and valuable step in avoiding this whole mess. I assume it's possible you are a law enforcement officer who isn't technical in nature. But, when you say things like "we could trace ANYONES IP address." and imply you can do it to their front door is ludicrous.

Personally, reading your poor punctuation, lack of capitilization, misspellings, and claim to be a law enforcement is insulting. I am sorry you were taken by Harpal and I also am sorry for anyone else who may have been swindled, but it seems like you had more resources then most to avoid this situation and warn anyone else.

I"m gonna throw my 2 cents in here which isn't worth a penny.  There was a internet fraud sting that was set up about 3 yrs ago between DTV and the FBI.  I remember the FBI having to subpoena the ISP to get the information on the ISP customers.  If the FBI had the technology to circumvent the ISP's systems, why would they need to go through the ISP.  Now that was then and this now and thing could have very well changed alot, I'm just thinking out loud.

Who cares what people think.  I'm assuming you joined the FBI because you felt a need to do the right thing, right?  It seems that doing the right thing in this case is helping those who got burned by Harpal.  Leaving the others to twist in the wind because one guy said some stuff seems...I dunno...wrong.

It's not far fetched to think that law enforcement officials have a love of arcadey goodness too.  Just recently I was talking (online) to someone I know is a cop, and they were telling me that he'd received one of those 'you sell object for $100, I send you $5000, send me the rest' scams.  He had the guy send it to his work.  Little does the guy know that his work is the police station!  So if the scammer ever shows up at his work, he's in for a rude shock.   

As for finding a guy from just his IP...sure, it's possible.  Combination of social engineering and/or the law can get you that info.  Get the IP, find out what ISP has that block.  Subpoena them to find who had that IP at that particular time.  Get their billing records.  Viola.

Of course, that isn't perfect; as stated before, good luck getting that info from China or the like.

Last I knew, eBay - though they shouldn't - has given info out freely in the past, without a warrant or subpoena.  Warrants aren't difficult to get though, esp. with probable cause.

So to sum up...back off, let Ken do his job, and that's it.

The first and fourth statements kind of clash with each other.  Note I say kind of.  The first statement may have been a way to avoid coming out and saying you were with the FBI.  Why you "admitted" being employed there later is strange.

The second statement...the government?  Man, you gotta have more cash than I do floating around.

The third statement is the kicker.  Why did you need ponyboy's help at the time?

Now there are instances in the thread where you do SOUND like a government employee.  They are aplenty.  But then there are instances where you sound like a regular old person.

The speed at which things are being accomplished suggest you speak the truth.

Of course, no offense to leapinlew, but just because you are unaware of something doesn't make it non-existant.  I think it's pretty common knowledge that the government has access to technologies and such that aren't available to the general public or even businesses.  This may be one instance.

Not taking up ninjaepisode on his offer doesn't speak well for you either.

I guess the one thing for me that stands out is the fact that if you are FBI, you weren't the least bit hesitant before dishing out what must've been a large sum of cash to a complete stranger in another country claiming to have extremely reduced prices on products.  This may be a friendly community, but it's not perfect.

I am on the fence on whether to believe you or not.  Ultimately, I suppose my opinion really doesn't matter, since I'm not involved in this other than this post.  So I won't say any more on the matter.

And heck, if others are skeptical, there's no reason to come out of the woodwork and calling him out on it.  And yes, I'm aware of the irony of my post.

Gotta say harpal really went out on a limb.  Even so much as to post a thread about being robbed to keep people off his back for just a little longer.

Ok, for the record, Yes i got VERY upset in the above posts, the reason being, I am VERY PROUD of working for this Country, and to have anyone question that is just plain insulting to me.  I am not some 12 yearold kid, I am a 35 year old man, and i offered to help, i told everyone here that i do not like letting people know where i work for these EXACT reasons.  Everyone thinks that because i work for the FBI, I should not get burned because i should do backround checks, or that we do not need help in some situations.  I mean i am human i am not SUPERMAN (except to my kids).  Yeah i work for the FBI, yeah i love old video games, even MAME which skirts the borders of leagality, i even SPEED on the highway!  I wanted the post put in POST HELL because it is now a "QUESTION KENMELK" thread and not the HARPAL thread it started out as.  I am still going to do what i feel is right in thie situation and do what i can, i am just not going todo it in the forums anymore.  I asked for Ponyboy to give me HARPALS phone number for a few different reasons, I had 1 number HARPAL had given me and i spoke to with, i wanted to see if the numbers were the same, AT THAT TIME I did not know how many people were invloved here so i asked for help, like anyone would have.  As for having extra cash while working for the government, like i said i work for the FBI because i LOVE it and LOVE THIS COUNTRY, believe me if i was working for the money, i would be working elsewhere.  You all need to know that there are things the private sector does not have or know, this however does not mean it does not exist.  Please excuse me for getting angry, like i said to question my motives, and my employment was just plain hurtful to me as i am VERY PROUD to do what i do for thei Country.
