calibration error w/ Star Wars yoke on gameport?
« on: April 11, 2002, 10:56:05 pm »
hey everyone,

I bought a star wars yoke on eBay. I swapped out the 5K trim pots w/ some 100K trim pots. I made sure that the pots were relatively centered when re-installing the gears.

I created a custom joystick in XP, a 2 axis flight yoke w/ 4 buttons. I then calibrated it, and everything looked fine. (in test mode, the target stays centered, and has full travel inside that box when moved).

So, now the problem: I load up Star Wars (rev 2), but the crosshair is off to the left, about 1/4 of the screen width from center. I get full travel across the screen, but have to hold the yoke to the right a bit to get the crosshairs centered.

I'm kinda confused now...it's weird that I can still get full screen travel, but the crosshair is off-center when the yoke is centered.

Any ideas? Thanks!

I forgot to mention that this happens in both Mame Win .58, and Mame32 .58.

It also happens in Empire Strikes Back, but does NOT happen in Return of the Jedi.

Thanks!

Maybe you need to change your sensitivity settings in Mame?

Fixed it...

had calibration data for another joystick apparently stored in cfg\mame.cfg

using a "fresh" mame install fixed it right up.

That's what I get for trying to troubleshoot at 1am...  :)

not only is this the exact same setup i have (sw yoke hacked to 100k pots), but it's the exact same problem too!

mine does the off-to-the-left thing a little, but get this, after one or two levels of play, it's just peachy fine at center.  weeeeird.  both on SW and ESB, and even RotJ by the way.

cheers

yeah, after a little more time playing, I found out that it is still off to the left just a little. And, like you said, sometimes it centers itself.

It is definitely better than before though...it was left of center by about half the travel originally.

I just bought a MS Dual Strike Controller off of eBay. I'm going to put the original 5K pots back in, and follow 1UP's instructions for that hack. I wanted a USB interface anyways, and the DS was cheap.

Since the DS hack uses all 3 contacts on the pots, maybe it won't be so jumpy? I dunno...
