Dear Lord, don't buy either one of those. Happ is raping you.
Buy a 3" Happ trackball from Happ here for $53.99:
http://www.happcontrols.com/trackballs/56010011.htm(Or see if Ponyboy can get you a better deal.)
Buy a replacement ball from Happ for $33.00:
http://www.happcontrols.com/trackballs/950029xx.htm $33.30
(Or see if Ponyboy can get you a better deal. I think Bob Roberts also has them, and a lot of folks have bought translucent 3" juggling balls, too.)
Buy GroovyGameGear's new optical encoder board when it becomes available (soon) for $16.95
(Or hack a cheap mouse.)
Even if you Buy the Happ ball and the GroovyGameGear encoder, you've only spent $104.24, leaving you $52.46 to light the thing up with. Or buy a spinner, which the GGG board should support, and the Happ interface won't.
The only difference between the trackball assembly I linked and the one you're looking at is that it has a higher "lip" of plastic around the trackball hole. Which is designed to push up through your control panel / plexiglass / lexan, but you can just sand the lip right off if you don't want it. Mechanically
and electrically, they're identical.
edit- electrically, they are not identical, maybe. The Happ diagrams show a different part # for the optic boards for these two balls. Whether they actually ship with two different boards, I don't know, the exploded diagram for the standard 3" may just be out of date, or it may actually ship with a different board.
